I Need An Answer From You OLD FARTS!

Yes, I'm an Old Fart myself so .. I cannot be reported to the PC police!

I've been watching Turner movies and I just wanted to ask you other Old Farts .. Who, today is equal to yesterdays actors?

Actors like Paul Newman, Steve Mcqueen, Marlon Brando, Clark Gable, Tyrone power, Earl Flynn, James Cagney, Edward G Robinson .. etc. etc.

Yes, I asked about the men simply because I know that we have Kim kardashian which would be the answer to the female roles!

Seriously, can anyone give me some answers to who is as good as the male (or female) actors of yesteryear?

Name ONE actor today who will be remembered fifty years from now?

Speaking only of his acting, Tom Hanks might, though he isn't exactly young.

One curiosity, which I think is related to modern Hollyweirdian mediocrity, is how many "stars" are straight out of the cute-guy or cute-girl cookie cutters. A Peter Lorre or Margaret Hamilton or Sidney Greenstreet would not be cast in significant roles in modern Hollyweird. It takes ordinary (or even homely and ugly) looking people to pull off substantial stories.

Just off the top of my head ...

For Peter Lorre, watch "Arsenic and Old Lace". Lorre plays a supporting part, a plastic "surgeon".

For Margaret Hamilton, watch the 1939 version of "The Wizard of Oz". Hamilton plays the Wicked Witch of the West.

For Sydney Greenstreet, watch "Casablanca"  or "The Maltese Falcon"; even better, watch both; Greenstreet played supporting roles in both, some shady characters.

"Old Hollywood" didn't lack for beautiful and handsome stars (Besides those who appeared in the movies I listed above, Myrna Loy in the "Thin Man" series comes to mid). But Hollywood employed a rather varied range of people, more so than modern Hollyweird.

I like Johnny Depp because he came up with one of the funniest comebacks when a reporter asked his opinion on some political subject.
 (Don't remember what it was)

 Not his exact words but as close as I can remember: "Why would anybody want an opinion from someone who makes faces for a living"?

He's not the best actor, but Keanu Reeves in John Wick was fantastic. I love that movie.

I was going to say Johnny Depp. Can't remember the movie but asked my wife "who is that guy" after a pretty good performance.

Some of my favorites; Steve McQueen, Yul Brynner, Charles Bronson, Eli Wallach in "The Magnificent Seven" (1960).

Johnny Depp when he isn't doing his make-up fetish stuff, for instance Transcendence was a really good movie in spite of getting panned.
Christian Bale
Edward Norton
Michael Keaton
Paul Bettany

If there is a problem I think it is in the types of movies being produced these days. Comedies have gone for the sh!t jokes, there are probably too many superhero movies being made, they haven't made a really good romantic comedy in 4 or 5 years. Dramas usually revolve around some sort of agitprop.

I'd include Denzel Washington. He might not go down as the greatest actor of the age, but he's one of the few consistently makes movies that I enjoy.

He hasn't made a good movie since Beautiful Mind.

His last films have all been turkeys, first and foremost Les Miz (which was so bad I had to turn it off about 1/4 of the way in).
