Bernie Sanders on People with Disabilities


This makes Bernie one of a handful of candidates ever to address disability issues. I'm available as his disability advisor if he needs one.

Bernie Sanders is a strong advocate for civil rights for all Americans, including those with disabilities. His voting record clearly supports equal rights and opportunities for individuals with disabilities and has been unwavering in this regard throughout his decades of public service.

Bernie co-sponsored the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA), which discarded several of the damaging rulings the courts have issued concerning the ADA and served to “ the broad scope of protection intended to be afforded by the ADA.”

Specifically, the ADAAA served to reject the reasoning used in two Supreme Court cases and to broaden the definition of disability to adhere to the ADA’s goal of providing “a clear and comprehensive national mandate for the elimination of discrimination” and “clear, strong, consistent, enforceable standards addressing discrimination.”

Barney and SloJoe need to hop the Vermonter back to Burlington. Couple old dudes who like a good train ride ( and SloJoe could qualify as brain disabled).  Hillary has already covered the spread according to the papers.

Absolutely.

No greater disfavor was given the handicapped than passage of the ADA; it's shoved most of us "protected people" out of the workforce onto the reservation, but perhaps that's what was intended anyway.

I have worked with many severely disabled individuals. They all wanted to be in the workforce not on the dole.  But you are right, the system did seem to be stacked against this option.  In one instance the person needed a special throttle / brake system to be able to drive.  Seems like something the ADA was made for, right?  Wrong.  Replacing the person's old vehicle (adapted by a relative) proved to be an absolute nightmare with more interference than help by the government agencies.
