Instead of reparations, make black votes count more than white votes
   
We used to count black Americans as 3/5 of a person. For reparations, give them 5/3 of a vote.

you want to shut down a conversation about race, just say the word “reparations.” Even black Americans are divided over the idea that money can compensate for the vestiges of an evil institution that ended 150 years ago; only 60 percent think the government should make cash payments to descendants of slaves. White Americans, on the other hand, have reached a consensus: In a YouGov poll taken shortly after the Atlantic published Ta-Nehisi Coates’s viral feature, “The Case for Reparations,” 94 percent were opposed.

Yet a year of protests over disparate law enforcement practices, a decade of particularly sharp income inequality and centuries of imparity in America show that racial reconciliation is impossible without some kind of broad-based, systemic reparations. Recognizing the original sin is simply not enough; we must also make moral and material amends for our nation’s treatment of African American citizens. But if a pecuniary answer can’t fix the structural disadvantage — and it can’t — what can?

Weighted voting.

Thanks to a compromise between Southern slaveholders who wanted enslaved blacks counted in the population, for the sake of boosting Southern congressional representation, and Northern whites who didn’t, the framers enshrined the three-fifths clause in the Constitution. This agreement set the census value of a slave as 60 percent of the value of a free person. Even after the 13th Amendment neutralized the political (and moral) compromise by abolishing slavery, Jim Crow laws, which contravened the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of equality, stopped blacks from voting. The just answer today is to invert that ratio. If black Americans were once counted as three-fifths of a person, let each African American voter now count as five-thirds.

Hey DU-Idiots, Part 2: Do you realize that slavery ended 150 years ago? That no former slaves are alive? That no children of former slaves are alive? That few grandchildren of former slaves are alive?

Also worth noting that no former slave-owners are still alive either - who do they expect to pay the reparations (other than using the magic money tree they seem to think that the government has)? Should the descendents of whites who ran the underground railroad pay? What about those who arrived in the U.S. after abolition? What about those who are almost entirely white but descended from slaves?

I will offer the same opinion that I expressed when this came out in the Post - Unless you are already seeing 100% voter participation this makes no sense. You should concentrate on executing your existing rights. If you (white, black, pink, purple, green, brown) don't care enough to get off your ass and vote you deserve whatever you get and you don't get to bitch about it either.

Even more clear this would require a Constitutional amendment than anything Trump has proposed, and this would attack a basic tenet of democracy (One man, one vote), you could just as easily say we should go back to counting Black votes as a fraction of real vote based on a track record of failure in Black-run cities once you open that door.

Obama should step to the front of the line to pay up.  Only slaves in his background are the ones his late mothers' ancestors owned.
I'm willing to pay reparations to slave descendants as long as they repay all the trillions forked out for their welfare entitlements over the past half century and longer.

A black reporter who is more protective of his vocation than his skin color...

Don Lemon spotlighted the racist motivations of Vester Flanagan, the fired journalist who murdered two of his former associates from WDBJ on Wednesday, during a Thursday commentary on Tom Joyner's syndicated radio show.
Lemon zeroed in on how the "discussion about Flanagan has mainly centered on mental health, and whether Flanagan was mentally ill.

The other, lesser discussion has been whether he was racist."
The CNN anchor bluntly contended that "if one objectively looks at Flanagan's actions and history, one can't help but come to the conclusion that both are probably true." [audio below]

Lemon led his commentary by expressing his horror at the shootings:
"I saw something I hoped I would never see happen, ever: someone shot and killed a television reporter and cameraman live on the air.

It is television journalists' worst nightmare."
 After giving a brief summary of the on-air murders of Alison Parker and Adam Ward, he focused on the "manifesto" that Flanagan sent to ABC News:

...In his manifesto he reportedly sent to ABC News, Flanagan says he had been discriminated against because he was black and gay.
He reportedly wrote in the manifesto that he had been attacked his entire life by white women and black men.

The station's general manager says that Flanagan had even filed suit against the station, claiming racial discrimination

In fact, in 2000, Flanagan had filed a similar claim against a Tallahassee television station – which, according to his attorney, was settled out of court.




The journalist highlighted that "fellow employees at WDBJ say Flanagan not only became increasingly difficult to work with, but became almost paranoid – obsessed with being a victim of homophobia and/or racism....
Psychologists say Flanagan used racism as a cover for his own shortcomings;
and in doing so, his downfall became a self-fulfilling prophecy."

Moments later, Lemon asserted that Flanagan was both "mentally ill" and "racist," and added that "Flanagan killed the two young people because they were white.
He has admitted as much.

And yes, anyone who does what he did is also out of their mind."
It should be pointed out that Lemon left one key detail about Flanagan's "manifesto."

 According to the ABC News report on Wednesday, the murderer revealed that "what triggered today's carnage was his reaction to the racism of the Charleston church shooting.
'Why did I do it? I put down a deposit for a gun on 6/19/15.

The Church shooting in Charleston happened on 6/17/15....What sent me over the top was the church shooting.
And my hollow point bullets have the victims' initials on them."
