The sources said eight of the 16 Cuban players had deserted, while team member Roger Aguilera put the number at seven, just the latest in a rash of Cuban defections across several sports.

"Everyone knows what happened to our team, we have seven of them in the United States," said Aguilera, after the decimated Cubans were hammered 13-0 by Trinidad and Tobago.

Right now if Cubans defect and come to the US they will not be sent back. If we normalize relations with Cuba that could change so people are jumping ship now.

Two problems with this narrative:

* The mean nasty US has no foot - booted or otherwise - on the Island of Cuba, except for Guantanamo Bay Naval Base ... for which the mean nasty US pays rent. Further, other than during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the US has not blockaded Cuba, not even partially.

* From 1959 through 1989 (or so) Cuba has a technologically advanced patron, the USSR. How did Cuba remain an economic hell-hole despite those 30 years of patronage and subsidy?

My Mom played field hockey in high school.
I thought it was a women's only sport.
I am wondering if they mean Lacrosse.
