Just one day after Sandra Bland was found dead in her jail cell in Texas, another young black woman, Kindra Chapman, was found in eerily similar circumstances in a jail cell in Alabama.

So another person in another jail in another state arrested for a different crime turns up dead?

The 18-year-old was arrested July 14 on accusations she stole a cell phone, according to AL.com. She was booked just before 6:30 p.m. and found unresponsive in her cell at 7:50 p.m. Like Bland, authorities have blamed Chapman’s death on suicide by hanging. Like Bland, Chapman’s family said the teen had a full and happy life and do not believe she committed suicide. Like Bland, Black Lives Matter activists have joined her family in demanding answers.


In an email to AL.com, Chapman’s mother, Kathy Brady, said she believes police killed her daughter, and that she wasn’t notified of Chapman’s death until 9 p.m.

Other family members who spoke with reporters said Chapman wouldn’t have killed herself.

“I want answers, like where was she for 45 minutes,” her cousin Otis Chapman asked local station WBRC. “There’s surveillance all around… She would not harm herself at all… In my heart, she wouldn’t do nothing like that.”

She was booked for stealing a cell phone and there aren't any reports of a violent arrest. However, there doesn't seem to be much of a motive for someone to kill her at this point.

Kindra Chapman, an 18-year-old found dead in her Homewood jail cell last week, committed suicide by hanging herself with a bed sheet, authorities and family members said today.

Despite community concern that the teen's death was a result of police brutality – protesters chanted for justice in Chapman's "lynching" as recently as Wednesday night during a Sandra Bland rally in New York – video evidence of the hanging, along with witness statements, confirmed what police have said all along.

While in the cell, the video shows that she appeared to be agitated, and she attempted to damage the contents of the cell. She knocked over a water cooler, took a bed sheet, and stood on the cooler to tie the bed sheet to a wall support rail extending from the ceiling. She then used the sheet to commit suicide, Falls said.


I wonder why they don't have closed circuit TV so that they can actually see in real-time what the inmates are doing.

I've seen several of their posts about this stuff where they are calling for video cameras to watch the inmates 24/7.

It's fascinating how they always point to the southern democrat's favorite pastime of hanging black people as how far they've come from their past. Now they're just hanging themselves without any help.  Heck, the next step might be getting off the dole. Empowerment, wherever it may lie!
