DFW (18,513 posts)

I have just lost a friend and the world lost a giant of song, stage and film

Theo Bikel, 1924-2015 RIP (Artful: if you say, 'who the **** is THAT,' he'd say, 'Well, you're just not very worldly..." Still: who the **** is THAT?)

Theodor Bikel, an Austrian Jew born in Vienna in 1924, was doing theater before he emigrated to the USA.(looks like he did a little spaetzle, too) A brilliant linguist, he used to say he spoke 35 languages, 17 of which were Yiddish.(Not seeing 'brilliant,' or even cunning. Your wife may disagree. )

A great actor, he had a role in "The African Queen" with Humphrey Bogart before I was even born (his alleged greatness is a condition of your birth status?). He played the Soviet submarine captain in "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming!" which was of my favorite films of the 1960s(Lucky for him you liked it, I guess, because so far it's all about you). He played in "The Sound of Music," and was a memorable Tevye in "Fiddler On The Roof" for countless times on the Stage. I was there for his "Theodore Bikel, the first 85 years" concert in Carnegie Hall in 2009, and got to meet Tom Paxton (wow! THE Tom Paxton???) and Peter Yarrow and Noel ("Paul") Stuckey (Mary Travers was ill and died shorty afterward). Theo was a brilliant folk singer, and was featured at the Newport Folk Festival in the 1960s along with Bob Dylan. He had roles in TV series like "Dynasty" and "Law And Order." He was EVERYWHERE. In his last years, he did a lot of Yiddish theater in Poland and Israel.

One time, when we had just celebrated the New Year, Theo told me, "get your guitar. We will sing Russian songs."(Say, did DFW ever tell you about his guitar skills? He can shred with the best of them. Why, this one time, he was spinning a dreidel with Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen, and Leo Nocentelli came by, and...) So, I got my guitar, he grabbed his, and we snuck off to an empty room in the hotel we were staying in, and played duets of Russian folk songs for nearly an hour.(NB: you are meant to take from this that DFW knows at least an hour of Russian folk tunes by heart and can lay them down on a guitar at will.) Here, one of my all time musical heroes (You didn't list his musical talents above, however. Odd, that...) invites ME to play a duet! At 1 AM on January first, a concert that would have sold out a medium sized hall in New York, Los Angeles, or probably even Tel Aviv for all I know (Hey, at LEAST a medium sized hall. I just got back from a Two Fat ****s Play Depressing Russian Sings in the Dark concert at the HOLLYWOOD BOWL, and those guys weren't NEARLY as famous as you) (I've never been to Israel (this is false modesty meant to burnish in your mind all the places he HAS been)), took place in a small conference room of a hotel in Charleston, South Carolina. The audience consisted of my wife and two local janitors who had no clue who Theo was, or what we were singing, but they sure knew that one of us (namely Theo), was amazingly good at what he was doing. (You said the two of you snuck off, now you had a crowd? Get your story straight.) To me, a lover of old Russian folk songs, this was the equivalent of being offered to do a guitar duet with Eric Clapton or Mark Knopfler or Leo Kottke (or any of the other hundreds of guitar players he knows and shreds with). It was like Jaco Pastorius inviting an amateur bassist to come up on stage and do "Birdland" with him.(translation: DFW knows who Jaco Pastorius was)

Theo didn't instantly warm to new acquaintances.(Except you, of course) We were introduced by Suzie Katz, a professional photographer from San Francisco and a mutual friend. But we had SO many mutual interests, it didn't take long before we became friends, too. I'm not Bob Dylan or Humphrey Bogart or anything, but we had plenty of musical tastes in common, and that makes up for plenty if you're a musician.(Has everyone gotten this by now? Christ.)

Auf Wiedersehen, alter Freund, Du wirst vermisst.(Essen Sie eine Tüte Penisse , jerkoff)

This is self-reference and self-promotion on a Will Pitt scale.

Somehow we are supposed to be impressed by the people DFW knows and the places he's been. The man supped with Helen Thomas. Helen. Thomas. Case closed.

4. I'm very sorry, DFW.

Maybe it's small comfort*, but you are not alone in your grief. Mr. Bikel was a giant. I didn't know he was a guitarist.

I hope you're able to sleep well, knowing that your friend was dearly beloved.

* - most things appear small to Bertha. Including DFW. Also Europe.

For a second there I thought DFW was trying to channel old HollisinSonoma. You had two grizzled old bastards playing guitar and names dropping faster than turds from a tall cow's ass.

It is sort of a cool story, bro. I just wish DFW would start befriending people I don't like, because he seems to bury most of his friends. Like Helen Thomas. Did you know her grave is six feet, six inches deep, just to accommodate her nose?

By the way, here's DFW laying down a track with his Yiddish bubbeleh:

TomInTib introduced Bikel to DFW.

Now he's dead because TomInTib killed him. Barehanded.

We need a cage match.
DFW vs Pittstain vs phDD vs gNads vs TiT
Weld the door shut.
Then-Chief Justice John Marshall observed, “Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.”

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”

I'd be willing to fork out some cash for pay per view.  Toss in a few other "primitives of prominence", and it would be a full comedy showcase.

After that match, DFW and Pitt would be dead.

nadin and PhDD would be knocked up.

There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

Your phrasing was too polite.

What is it with these DUmbasses, the president included?  Even an obituary is all about them.  No wonder we have dossiers on all of them.
