Too much flag waving at FIFA

I think the American women's soccer team was incredible. Their athletic skills, enthusiasm and spirit is outstanding and inspiring.

But all that ****ing flag waving, among the fans and on the field, was a turnoff to me. And people shouting "USA," "USA," is barf inducing.

I saw a few small Japanese flags being waved in the stands here and there. But no other country seems to throw their flag in the world's face as much as we do. It's as though we are somehow "superior" to the rest of the world and we have to let them know it as often as possible.

The only other country I can recall waving a flag this much was Germany in the 1930s and 1940s.

Somehow, we've got to get rid of this "American Exceptionalism" sickness of the mind and realize we are on a planet with almost seven billion other people. And many are content without having to wave their national flag in the face of the world.

It's time we got over ourselves.

it seems like there are a lot of "true patriots" here.

Sorry, but my "patriotism" is of a quieter kind.

No flag waving whatsoever. That should make you feel better.

Oh yeah I almost forgot... the American National Anthem is booed so loudly you can feel the sound. You'd like it.

OOF!

21. You're kidding me right? Have you never watched English, German, Italian or Spanish soccer league

games? Or any league games in Latin America?

Have you watched any Euro cup or Copa America matches?

This was tame compared to what fans of those countries or teams do during matches.

I was in Hamburg, Germany during Euro cup 2012. Hamburg essentially shut down during the matches and the entire city came out to celebrate wins, waving flags and going crazy.

This manufactured outrage is ridiculous.

30. No, I'm not a big soccer fan/watcher

But flag waving is something I never approved of. And the fact that many Americans think we're "The Greatest Country In The World" is depressing. True greatness doesn't need to brag.

Cyrano is probably aware that other countries go apey over their national teams. This represents no cause for reflection, however: I will wager that Cyrano thinks it's fine for every other country to flag-wave and holler and chant and carry on...just not the US. Because, "hands up don't shoot" or something.

Also I am sure that if this was the men's team and not the women's, people would have been far more sympathetic to Cyrano. DU hates American men all the time, but especially when they dominate other men.

They were showing some of the post win festivities last night on Fox News.  Even those loser Japanese were waving their flags during the ceremonies.

What a dummie!

The reason there were so many Americans is that the match was right next door.  A few days trip for most Americans.

To come from Japan is a serious vacation -- probably a week at best (just to adjust for the time zone changes on both ends).

If this had been held on South Korea (for example) the flag waving and chants would have been the other way -- that is until the US took that 2-0 lead to 4-0 ending in 5-2.  It might have been pretty silent for most of the match :)

There was a fair amount of rainbow flag waving for the past two weeks. I wonder why Cryano didn't bitch about that?

Sir-Rain-O says, "It's as though we are somehow "superior"".....well. there was a time when we were and there was no question about it.

Hi5,and very true. This country used to try and be the best at everything. Now only the women can, apparently. The men's team would have been accused of being sexist by DU because.... RAPE!!

I realize that the above paragraph makes no sense. It makes about as much sense as some of the tripe I've seen out of the 'people' (to use the term VERY loosely) on DU. And the sad thing is, they seem to think it is the smartest thing EVAH!!

To the lurking DUches:

America is STILL the greatest nation in the world, I believe that from the bottom of my heart. If it wasn't, all those illegal immigrants you @#%!sticks are pandering votes from wouldn't be coming here for MORE opportunities than they have back in their own countries.

I dare you to name one country, ONE @#$!ING country that compares to us and say it with a straight face. If you mention any of the European countries, I will laugh at you, they are just now dealing with having to fend for themselves and pay for things on their own since we aren't fitting the bill for their defense anymore. And oh by the way... GREECE.

China? Oh yes, tell me about a country who is blocking their internet from ANY outside source of information Ala 1984.

Russia? Vladamir Putin trying to bring back the old CCCP (that puts a tingle up your leg, doesn't it you commie sympathizers?!) But between the Russian mob and the whole Ukraine thing, he's not looking so good either.

Well that leaves you North Korea or Cuba. THOSE are some great places to live! Everyone is so HAPPY!! (/sarc)

But I vote we send you on a one-way ticket to haditha, Iraq, where 4 homosexuals were tossed off a 4-story roof to their deaths by ISIS. I bet that sounds like paradise right now, doesn't it?! You can preach Proglydytism to the muslims, and see how they like it. I bet you last about 2 minutes before you follow the homosexuals and are tossed off the rooftop.

Take your anti-American sentiment, and shove it up your fourth point of contact, where your head is. I've outlined your choices; pick one and LEAVE RIGHT now.

Oh FYI: you are given a one-way ticket, your passport will be cancelled, and you will no longer be an American citizen. Get the hell out of my country you @#$! stains on the drawers of life. And NEVER return. :bigbird:

Invariably they say Sweden, Iceland, Norway, and now Greece. You have to understand: DUmmies want the world to burn. They're happy to give up what few comforts and privileges they have so others will be miserable. They are content with the permanent suffering of millions if it means the downfall of even one banker. DUmmies are stupid, stupid people who wish you and me ill. Luckily they have no say and they rarely vote, so all they cost us is welfare.

All very true, but I use this as a method of drawing out their stupidity early. Because the moment I hear those countries being mentioned, I KNOW they know absolutely nothing about how the world works.

Does the Dummie realize that the match was played in Vancouver, British Columbia, less than 100 miles from the U.S?  If Canada was in the championship match and it was held in Seattle I bet there would be a couple of Canadian flags in the stands also.

To a DUmmy the world only works to the extent that it takes from X and gives to Y. As long as they're Y, all's well. DUmmies are cheering on Greece's collective wrist-slitting and will howl when, golly, no one else wants to lend them money. DUmmies can't even shake a few bucks loose to keep Pam from shitting her pants, so you know they don't give a hoot about an entire economy. Leave aside that Greece has collapsed specifically because it dishes out entitlements like they want to US to do.
