So…..today the stupid Greeks rejected austerity measures that could save them much suffering and deprivation in the future; there’s gonna be Hell to pay, and it couldn’t happen to better people than the spoiled-brat Greeks.

It’s also reasonable to expect the European Union to crumble.

Back, I dunno, maybe ten years ago or something, the primitives were always crowing that the European Union and that silly currency had permanently displaced the United States as a great economic power, and the American dollar as the premier global currency.

The primitives said it was permanent; the world had changed, and we were never going back to American primacy and dominance.  Never again.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with our good friend Laelth when he was here, before BainsBane chased him away from Skins’s island.

I disremember the issue, but anyway, our good friend insisted that decent and civilized people had to “get used to” something, as the change was permanent, final, irrevocable.

I butted in, reminding our good friend Laelth that nothing in the course of human events is permanent, or final.  I think I was referring to a woman’s “right to choose” in my now-forgotten example, predicting that at some time in the future—I dunno when, just that it’s inevitable—society will decide it’s not a good idea to murder infants, and pffft! there goes that “permanent” “right to choose.”

It’ll probably never happen in this lifetime, but it’ll happen.

Only God is final; all else continually shifts, changes, alters.

And thus those long-ago discussions about the European Union and the euro, with European members of the old freerepublic.com gloating about it; I constantly reminded them that nothing is permanent, the world always changes.

Not as quickly as we’d like it to sometimes, but it changes.

One’s top dog today, bottom dog tomorrow.

Alas for the primitives, in case they got any absurd notion that winning two presidential elections in a row is a sign that the party of decent and civilized people is finally at long last—and permanently—vanquished, never to bother the primitives again.

The Greeks in their wisdom are following their far-left-fringe prime minister into economic collapse and chaos. That may well be the point of his strategy.

Within a short time, Greece will probably become a client state of Russia and begin enjoying Cuban-style freedom and prosperity.

That dipshit communist prime minister, who looks and sounds like Shepard Smith, longs for Putin's warm embrace.

With the West emasculated and leaderless, that's what he's likely to get.

I think the Euro/EU-hype started nearly 20 years ago. The EU was going to be such an economic power, yada, yada, yada. I thought it unrealistic then, The various countries are so different culturally and economically - not to mention centuries of wars and hostilities among them - that I thought it would take master cat-herds to herd the wildest cats, when all they had was ordinary politicians.

Between Greece's economic insanity and the Euros' bailout after bailout after ... Greece got firmly wedged between the the proverbial rock and hard place. The proposed bail-out would have been horrible, and the sole alternative, sovereign bankruptcy, will be horrible. If I had any confidence that the Greek people chose the sovereign bankruptcy route to avoid the bailout treadmill, I'd be encouraged. In reality, I think some one has fooled them into thinking sovereign bankruptcy will be trivial, and Greece will be able to resume its economic insanity after a few rough months or couple of years.

What's painful for me to contemplate in this is that the US is probably farther down the debt road than Greece is, and our people and pols are just as fixed on bandaids, smoke-and-mirrors economics, and keeping oblivious to reality.

Yeah, it actually was about twenty years ago, during the early 1990s, that all this hoopla about a new world order and the demise of America began.

And of course the news media cheered it on; old America was finally and permanently humbled.

It's bullshit; the more things "change," the more they stay the same.

I'm sensitive about this because I grew up with this attitude, this perception, that things are permanent.....such as the 42-year stranglehold Democrats had on the House of Representatives; I thought for sure that was the way it was going to be forever and ever.
