Why hold any Democratic debates at all?

Lets face it, Senator Sanders, Governor O'Malley and Governor Chafee are all swell guys. And they can't hold a candle to Secretary Clinton when it comes to name recognition, experience, and electability. Its not even close. Oh, and for those of you comparing her position now to 2008, do you honestly think any of these three gentleman has what President Obama has and will ride a wave of popularity to deny her the nomination? *snort* Not going to happen.

The DNC's goal is to elect a Democratic President. That's it. Period. Secretary Clinton's poll number dwarf anyone else running, and barring something totally unexpected, she will be the nominee. The only thing debates can do is weaken her. How do you strengthen someone who's numbers are as high as hers? You don't.

Therefore, why hold debates? Let the candidates go on the stump, and run ads, and do what candidates do. But in my mind debates would be strategically unwise.

Yes, this is not a convenient truth, and I know will upset many, but what real benefit is to be gained? The other candidates can still get their message out. But big picture, I want a Democrat in the White House come 2017. Do debates help or hurt that goal? In my mind they hurt it.

7. Why are "debates" so revered anyway?

Up until 1976, no Presidential debates (excepting 1960) had been held since the 19th century. They're a relatively new concept in the American election scene. There are a million ways for any candidate to get his or her message out. So why do we bow down to and revere debates so much?

35. Its reality

I want my candidate going into the general election in as strong a position as possible. Lets look at it from the other side. The Republicans will trot out a dozen candidates who will collectively pull each other down through debate after debate after debate. Whoever emerges from that process will come out bruised, bloodied, with commentators pulling apart their debate statements for any contradictions you can find. I would prefer to avoid that.

Extrapolate much? All the candidates would be free to campaign. Free to raise money. Free to advertise and lay out their positions. Debates really didn't come into vogue in Presidential campaigns until the latter half of the 20th century. Yet somehow, anyone who questions their value this year is labeled "against democracy". Heavens. I feel the vapors coming on.

It's cute how they get all respectful of official titles when the candidate is a Democrat.  They couldn't care less about * when he was Governor or President.

I am constantly bemused by their endless references to Hitlery's "Experience."  As far as I can see, it's limited to serving as a junior Senator to Chuck the Schmuck, living in the White House, and exercising a magical fecal touch on everything she did as Secretary of State.  On top of that, the utter lack of any relevant experience, or any executive experience at all, meant absolutely nothing to them when they elected Obozo, and they are far too arrogant to ever openly admit that was a huge mistake.
