In June 2015, Rehm interviewed 2016 Democratic Presidential candidate and United States Senator Bernie Sanders and said to Sanders, "Senator, you have dual citizenship with Israel." Sanders stated that her statement was simply not true. Rehm responded to Sanders denial by saying, "I understand from a list we have gotten that you were on that list." Once again, Sanders stated that he is an American and only an American. Sanders indicated that he was offended by the assumption. Rehm's statements were criticized in The Federalist for being an anti-Semitic smear, when someone assumes that a Jewish person is a dual citizen with Israel, to chill speech and question the Jewish person's allegiance to America. Sophia Tesfaye of Salon pointed out that Rehm apparently fell for an Antisemitic canard and did not successfully fact-check her information before she conducted her Sanders interview. The Times of Israel, stated that the interview was controversial because Rehm seemed to have accused a Jewish presidential candidate of maintaining secret Israeli citizenship.

The question being asked, if sincere, to me is obviously appropriate. Dual citizenship with ANY COUNTRY is something the electorate should know about any candidate for POTUS. Is that debatable?

We are talking about a man that dons a skull cap and campaigns for president of the United States, by visiting the wailing wall and Yad Vashem, the sacred jew holocaust shrine. This is a man who went from an absolute NOBODY Senator, to President of the United States in two years flat. He beat out the first woman to run for office, and became instead, the first black man to hold said office.

While I assume Stormfront-grade neo-Nazi types impugn Jews' loyalty to the US using the dual citizenship canard, I've only heard it, so far, from Libs/Progs. I assume that if I swam in Stormfront-style ideology-sewers I'd hear it there, too. Similarly, there in DU-Land, though they are currently outraged that one of the commentariat at the reliably liberal (but not slavishly so enough to satisfy DU-folk, obviously) NPR applied the dual citizenship canard to their darling Bernie.
