Brownback and the courts
« on: June 10, 2015, 01:45:24 PM »
Wasn't sure where to go with this, so I put this in Politics. Mods, if you feel it belongs somewhere else, please feel free to move it.

I was watching Rachel Maddow (because she was the only thing worth watching on AFN, sad to say) and she mentioned this about Kansas. I took what she said with a grain of salt, because come on, it's Madcow. But it got me wondering, what the hell are they thinking in Kansas?

Big Dog or Bad dog (I can't remember which) still has ties or lives there. What is Governor Brownback doing here? He seems to be taking a page from Obama. Which can't be good for the republicans in the state. My main concern is the idiot dems around Wichita and Topeka might use this to get some gains, and the poor people of Kansas get stuck with another Sebelius again.

Here's the link to Madcow's two minute's hate:

Interesting. It appears that Brownback has been less than successful; but apparently there is a little more political maneuvering to the story:

..."This 30-year veteran of state legislative coverage for the AP could be a model for reporters in Washington, where "background" briefings and email, "quote approval," and other erosions of journalist authority are too often met with passive-aggressive acquiescence. Hanna flipped the script.

In doing so, he learned that Sullivan was threatening, on Brownback's behalf, to lay off prison guards, cut aid to public schools, and reduce payments to health care providers and nursing homes if legislators didn't agree to increase taxes. This is information the public needed to know in time to influence the debate—and to better understand the impact of Brownback's short-sighted decisions.

An advocate of trickle-down economics, the former GOP senator persuaded lawmakers a few years ago to slash taxes by more than $700 million, including a $210 million full income-tax exemption for farmers and business owners. The theory: They would use the tax windfall to invest in their businesses, which would create jobs and lift the economy.

It didn't work. The state budget is now projected to run an $800 million deficit, which would violate the state constitution, forcing Brownback to backtrack. He wants to repeal just $24 million in tax cuts to farmers and small businesses—and increase sales and cigarette taxes, which disproportionally hurt the poor....

I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed, a democracy in a republic, a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect union, one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes. I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its Constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies.

It is inaccurate to describe Brownback as practicing trickle-down economics.  What he did was put the cart before the horse. He, and the Republican controlled legislature, cut taxes before they cut spending. This is the first year of lower revenues, so the budget won't balance.

The likelihood that a DOnk will be elected governor in 3 1/2 years is low. That DOnk will have to promise two rainbows in every garage and two unicorns in every pot!

Well that makes sense. Sadly I can see them doing something stupid like this. You cut spending FIRST, THEN cut taxes. Why the rider on the courts though? What have they been up to lately that he objects to? And where are these allegations of voter fraud in Kansas of all places coming from? (Let me guess, Wichita).

We have a court case here about 'adequate funding' for K-12 education. The conflict is between the Legislature and the 3 judge appelate panel.

Actual voter fraud here is a new one on me. Our Secretary of State is a voter ID proponent, and our voter ID fraud law appears to be working. The Donks in the media hate him for it.

Okay, that makes sense to me now. I knew that there had to be more to the story than madcow was presenting. As for the Voter fraud, Kansas is the last place that I would suspect of that, unless it was Wichita or Topeka. But she was definitely getting her two minute's hate on for Kansas and Gov. Brownback in particular. Accusing him of being everything that conservatives 'claim' Obama does.  :rotf: God she is an idiot!

Our voter ID law keeps the urban Donks on the leash, although Wyandotte (Kansas City, KS), Sedgwick (Wichita), Douglas (Lawrence) and Shawnee (Topeka) counties are Democrat Party territories.

The conflict between the progressive and conservative Republicans is stronger than R against D. We have a lot of progressive Republicans in office, because they would never get elected if they ran as Donks.
