I grew up and lived in the Detroit area for years; at the time "integration" was a big deal in the push for racial equality and millions upon millions of dollars was spent on upgrading schools, neighborhoods, busing, etc. It didn't take long before students/families complained that they didn't like going to schools outside of their neighborhoods and there was a shift to spend even more money on inner city schools and programs. However, studies showed that the amount of money spent didn't make a whole lot of difference. Graduation rates didn't improve nor did academic grades; in fact, just the opposite happened.
I left the area over 20 years ago and in speaking to friends still in the area and looking at articles; Detroit is in shambles. The government, architects, builders, contractors, etc., tried to revitalize downtown Detroit on and off for decades unsuccessfully. Whole blocks have been deserted and buildings have been turned into rubble. Detroit is a prime example of the failure of LBJ's so-called "Great Society".
Now, "whites" are moving back into theses areas where blacks have fled and rebuilding and making homes; so should we assume this is due to white privilege?
I think not. It's a matter of working for a living and striving to make a home rather than expecting a living and a home. Liberalism hasn't worked in the past, isn't working today and won't work in the future.
