The economy must be horrible, Americans are going to hand $100M over to a hollywood

movie studio this weekend for one movie. What all could that money do? Could there be no better use of that money than handing it to actors and hollywood executives?

5. Movies were very popular during the depression as well.
Who cares if folks want to escape the shit of the world for 2 and half hours?

In 1934, theater tickets cost a dime.  The value of a dime in 1934 equals the value of $1.60 in 2008.  How much are movie tickets today?

In 1934, the high end price of gasoline was 19 cents per gallon.  The value of 19 cents in 1934 equals the value of $3.08 in 2008.

Paying $9.00 for a theater ticket in 1934 would be like spending $144.00 in 2008.
Paying $4.00 for a gallon of gas in 1934 would be like spending $64.00 in 2008.

(Somebody tell me why movie tickets were half the price of a gallon of gas in 1934, but now cost more than double the price of a gallon of gas in 2008)

The DUmmies need and want a Great Depression II.  It is so sad the facts do back up their false reality.

So to expand on the DUmmie's logic (irony alert here) if people stopped spending money on going to the movies, what do they think would happen to the economy? Movie studios employees thousands of people all the way from the lowly vendor who sells food, towns and locations that allow films to be made, to the writers, directors and actors (and their entourages) who perform in the movies. Weren't the DUmmies wringing their hands a few months ago during the strike that shut down TV production and put many people out of work? That caused a huge ripple effect in the economy especially in Los Angeles.

Again, their grasp (or decided lack of) economics is astounding. They really do not understand free markets and capitalism at all. If a movie is raking in $100 million and is considered a blockbuster, you can bet that the return on investment is great. Lots of profit being made there. Which is a good thing.

If people decided to stay home and not spend that "100 million", lots of people would suffer financially. I bet even a few DUmmies would. Someone would be posting on DU complaining about losing their job because the theater owner couldn't afford to keep them on as a concession stand employee.

Idjits.

I can see November 2 from my house!!!

Spread my work ethic, not my wealth.

Forget change, bring back common sense.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

I think the unspoken message/question in the OP DUmmie's post is why are people not cooperating with the DUmmie Meme that economic life is over - how come people aren't living life as painted by the DUmmies.

What follows the OP are drive-by paint strokes attempting to to rationalize why actual reality and DUmmie wishful thinking do not mesh.  It can't EVER be that they are flat-out wrong.

well of course :-)

They embody the definition of insanity - doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result.

I was going to split the quote to address each point (and reinforce each), but it goes better together.

Hey, lurking DUmb****s--the American people don't want your "prosperity."

Not to mention the concessions. For the price of an Artery Busterâ„¢ jumbo tub of buttered popcorn and two Diet Cokes, you could buy a used KIA.

Damn those affluent Batman-lovin' bastards!

In a world of reverse inflation, the $5 Big Burp Cola would have cost $79.95 in 1934.

You give Kias far too little credit, or DUmb****s too much, as they'd actually buy a used (really used) Yugo.

146. Yet 'escapism' is watching a movie that basically shows topical events and makes them disturbing.
That's like using Hitler's ovens to roast marshmallows on instead of a bonfire.

He's got a point there. I'm sure of it. He would not have said that otehrwise. So, anyone know WTF he's talking about?

In case you haven't heard – or witnessed at any cineplex this weekend – The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan's dark sequel about the Caped Crusader, took in $158.3 million since Friday.

Speaking on Britain's GMTV Monday morning, the star of the picture, Christian Bale of the impressive box-office take: "It's Monopoly money to me – I can't even comprehend it."

Along with a hearty $27.6 million opening take for Mamma Mia – the best ever for a musical, topping last year's Hairspray opening – this turned out to be the best three-day weekend in Hollywood history.

I've noticed a complete lack of anti-Iraq and anti-USA films this year. I bet it will be one of the best years hollywood has had this century.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.
