 TEHRAN, July 16 (UPI) -- Iran is building a new line of stealth fighter jets, the head of the Iranian air force announced Wednesday.

The new jets are just one of a group of military improvements that include new tanks and an electro-optical surveillance system that functions as a backup for radar, the Fars News Agency reported.

Brig. Gen. Ahmad Mighani told Press TV the new fighter jets would be able to prevent any violation of Iranian air space.

"We have upgraded our air force fleet, radar systems and missile systems over the past few years, and we are now ready to counter any threat," Mighani said.

Iran has threatened to counter-attack if Israel launches an air strike aimed at its nuclear facilities.

Here is the picture of the new Iranain Stealth Fighter jets they are building.




I found a real picture on Google. It looks like the new Mig trainer the Russians have been trying to sell to other countries. Not all that stealthy if this is the true aircraft..

Back in the 80's, the Islamofascists thought it would be cool to launch an air strike on Israel.  They chose Quicksilver-type ultralights as the weapon of choice, because the tube and fabric construction would make them invisible to radar.

The gunners manning 'Vulcan' AA guns on the Israeli border heard the 2-cycle engines closing on their positions, and opened fire; shredding ultralight and would-be martyr for Allah alike, in a hail of 20mm fire.

Thus ended the last attempt of the Islamofascist to use small RCS to their advantage.

I'm gonna hazard a guess here, that it might take Israel say.....48 hours to completely destroy Iran's air strike capability using manned aircraft........it might take them a bit longer if the Iranians buried their planes in the desert like Saddam did........

Not really, unless they send IRBMs with nukes on them to Iran to do the talking.  The IDF is very good at what it does because it has a very confined mission and mission space, and what it does is defend Israeli territory and the people in it.  Consequently they have an extremely limited capability to project force in any sort of deep strike more than half a fuel tank away.  The Osirak strike was near the absolute limit of their operational range and taking out the Iranian Air Force would make the Luftwaffe's time-over-target problems in the Battle of Britain look like nothing by comparison.

The new Iranian fighter just doesn't look "stealthy" to me based on my understanding of the design concepts required to reduce an aircraft's radar cross-section.  It looks very conventional in design to me.....I see some baffles on the engine intakes, but nothing on the exhausts to reduce the infrared signature......dunno....

I'm no expert on combat aircraft design, but I have an understanding of the design necessities required to reduce radar reflection, and I just don't see any of those in use here.....IMHO....

It's not a question of their motive or the reason for any attack orders, it's an issue of capabilities.  Most of Iran is far out of range of anything the IDF can put in the air (well, anything that has attack capabilities, anyway).

Bear in mind that not only a decent angular design and dissipation of the heat signatures are involved with stealth aircraft, but there is also the application of low IR and low reflectivity paint that reduces the IR signature and the radar reflectivity. The US switched to the low IR paint schemes on it's aircraft a couple or three decades ago. The low radar reflectivity (or radar absorbing paint) came to become quite popular in the late 80s, just prior to the release of the stealth aircraft into the military's arsenal.

That new iranian jet is nothing more then an F-5E with two tails and new intakes copied from all those F-5Es we sold them just before the Shah was run out. It would be lucky to hold its own against an F-15.

seriously doubt that it would matter what airframe the iranian pilots were in, pilot quality matters... us or israeli pilots would be able to take them down in a sopwith camel if they had to...
