- Major scientific breakthroughs don't come cheap for taxpayers.

The U.S. Energy Department this week announced it plans to spend an additional $75 million to renew a project that seeks to "harness solar energy" for the production of transportation fuels.

The $75 million will go to the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis, a DOE Energy Innovation Hub established in 2010.
If Congress appropriates the money, that is.

Without taxpayer funding, such a project would not be cost effective.
It's still not clear if such a project will ever be commercially viable, although that is the goal.

"JCAP researchers are focused on achieving the major scientific breakthroughs needed to produce liquid transportation fuels from a combination of sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide, using artificial photosynthesis," DOE explained.


DOE admits that the "scientific challenges" of producing such fuels "are considerable," but JCAP plans to expand on what it's learned since 2010 to forge ahead. In 2010, DOE awarded around $122 million over five years to launch the fuels-from-sunshine project.

“Basic scientific research supported by the Department of Energy is crucial to providing the foundation for innovative technologies and later-stage research to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change,” said Under Secretary for Science and Energy Lynn Orr. 

“JCAP’s work to produce fuels from sunlight and carbon dioxide holds the promise of a potentially revolutionary technology that would put America on the path to a low-carbon economy,” she added.

Artificial photosynthesis is supposed to emulate the inner workings of plant life to produce "a useful transportation fuel we can put right into our cars without further processing," DOE says.

JCAP, like DOE's other innovation hubs, brings together top researchers who specialize in the same field -- in this case, artificial photosynthesis.
JCAP is led by the California Institute of Technology in partnership with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

The ultimate objective is to drive the field of solar fuels from fundamental research, where it has resided for decades, into applied research and technology development, thereby setting the stage for the creation of a direct solar fuels industry.
