Honestly, I hate that I could be perceived as a "blame the victim" type of guy at any time.

But on the other hand, I just can't help but think how stupid Kyle was in contributing to his own death. He knew that a fellow veteran was suffering from PTSD (or if not PTSD, some other serious mental issues), and his notion of helping him cope with it was to take him target shooting. Target shooting.

I mean, did taking the guy fishing or to a ballgame ever cross his mind instead? I just don't get it.

Plus the fact that the guy was charged with capital murder so there'll be no mitigation of his sentence. He'll spend the rest of his life in prison. It's Texas, so he's lucky they didn't want to execute him. Still, the guy clearly had some mental issues that contributed to his actions but there'll be no mitigation of the sentence, all for a situation where he should have never been placed in the first plae.

And the timing of the trial sucked for the guy. Right after the American Sniper movie was released.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the guy should have walked free, but I just think there's a greater tragedy at hand and that the victim's complete cluelessness to the situation played a role.

Instead, he'll spend the rest of his life in prison. Another stain to the reputation of Chris Kyle in my book.

The whole thing is mind-boggling, even to DUmmy Tommy_Carcetti.

If I have a friend who's shell-shocked, or brain-scrambled, or talking and acting like a lunatic, the first thing I'm going to do is give him a loaded gun and turn my back. Really?

It would have been crazy to give the guy a hockey stick, let alone a loaded firearm.

I'm glad the nut is going to be out of circulation permanently, but what a stupid, stupid thing to do.

It makes me wonder if maybe Kyle was a little off his rocker as well.

Stooooopid DUmmie. It came out during the trial that Chris Kyle was never informed how bad off the killer was.  OTOH, his actions following the murders showed that he was not crazy, and he knew what he did was wrong.

VA medical centers use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, including desensitization therapy, to treat Veterans with PTSD. Furthermore, a diagnosis of PTSD does not equal lack of mental capacity about right and wrong, which the jury affirmed in this case.

    • Was a support element trooper who never fired a shot in anger, nor took any incoming fire.  He was an armorer and a prison guard in Iraq who never saw combat and did not clean up bodies in Haiti.
    • Was a narcissist who "suffered" from psychosis brought on by heavy marijuana and booze abuse, not PTSD.
    • Was alcohol and drug dependent, and most likely under the influence when he committed his crime.
    • Did not particularly like the way Kyle and Littlefield treated him (ie did not bow and scrape and marvel in his presence) which further exacerbated an already ****ed up world view.

    The only mistake Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield made was mistaking a drugged out snowflake (ie any garden variety DUmmie) for a PTSD suffering brother that needed the help and support of fellow warriors.[/list]

    One of the ways Kyle helped his fellow vets was by taking them shooting, it was therapy for him as well. Good freaking Lord, who wouldn't want to go shooting with America's most lethal sniper? All he knew about this guy is that his mother had been asking Kyle to take her son for months. And he didn't have ****ing PTSD, he was just a shitbag. I'm sick to death of people questioning Kyle's motives and blaming him. People can be weird, skittish & talking to themselves with a loaded weapon in each hand and still have absolutely no thought of killing anyone. Both the movie and the book which was an AUTOBIOGRAPHY, clearly explains why he chose to help his fellow veterans this way.

    Chris Kyle suffered from PTSD - real PTSD and not the bullshit that DUmmie Routh "suffered" from.  The way he would try and bond with those who were having PTSD troubles was to find a common thread which was shooting - which is something that veterans normally have a pretty well versed education about. 

    Chris Kyle agreed to take Routh to the range at the request of Routh's mother to try and help him with his "troubles" caused by his "PTSD".  For this, he was executed by Routh because "... they wouldn’t talk to me...  I was just riding in the back seat of the truck, and nobody would talk to me. They were just taking me to the range, so I shot them. I feel bad about it, but they wouldn’t talk to me."

    Chris Kyle's reasoning for the way he helped his fellow veterans is very well documented, if you have but the slightest inkling to look.

    Sounds like Kyle dragged the poor guy to the range. I have to believe that contributed significantly to the tragedy.
