OK, this took my breath away!. Back in 1964-70s my job at the NIH was to make up artificial amnionic fluid and to mind the fetal sheep immersed in it as our research group developed and tested bio-materials (tubing, encasements, membranes, chambers etc.) for the artificial heart and lungs. I can't believe the Japanese are being highlighted for something NIH researchers (and your mom) did years ago. My mother and father (Granny and Gramps) took special pride in bringing their friends (all passed away now) over to see the fetal sheep in the tanks in the lab. This is a bit of history that I was a part of. Can't believe this. Have to search for our old papers. But if you want to search it out, Ted Kolobo, Warren Zapol
and Gerald Vurek were the primary researchers on this. I was the lab tech (doing a lot of the work but considered a "peon" in the hierarchy.) AMAZING!

Our research over a span of 8-10 years led to discoveries in artificial membranes for the artificial lung, the Optisat (non-invasive technique for measuring oxygen saturation in pre-mature babies, leading to that thingy that is placed on your finger to measure oxygen saturation as your BP is taken, bio-materials for the artificial lung outside the body (perfusion) and heart valves, etc. A lot of stuff came out of that lab and I am proud to have been a part of it.
