The big_dog primitive posted about a new class offering at Arizona State University called Race Theory & the Problem of Whiteness.  The post could have served as a good launching point for a discussion about race but big_dog self-deleted it for some cowardly reason.

Fox News Rips Into Arizona State University For Course Titled 'The Problem Of Whiteness'




A segment on Friday's "Fox and Friends" chastised Arizona State University for offering a course this spring that examines the "problem of whiteness." Co-host Elizabeth Hasselbeck spoke with Lauren Clark, an ASU student who was disturbed by a course in the school's English department titled "Race Theory & the Problem of Whiteness." Clark is also a writer for Campus Reform, a student news website backed by the Leadership Institute, which organizes conservative groups on campus.

Clark took issue with the class book list, which included titles like "Everyday Language of White Racism" and "Possessive Investment in Whiteness." A syllabus for the class was not available online. "All of these books have a disturbing trend and that's pointing to all white people as the root cause of social injustices for this country," Clark said. Hasselback then asked Clark whether ASU would dare offer a course called "The Problem With Blackness" or "The Problem With Being Female."

"I don't think that would fly at the university," Clark responded. "Quite frankly, as an ASU student myself, I'm disappointed that my school would offer a course like this. Clearly we have a lot of work to go as a society in terms of racial tension, but having a class that suggests an entire race is the problem is inappropriate, wrong, and quite frankly, counter productive."

Hasselback added that she thought the course seemed "quite unfair and wrong and pointed." When contacted by TPM on Friday, Lee Bebout, the white professor teaching the class, referred questions to the university's press office. The university issued the following statement on the course to TPM:

This course uses literature and rhetoric to look at how stories shape people’s understandings and experiences of race. It encourages students to examine how people talk about – or avoid talking about – race in the contemporary United States. This is an interdisciplinary course, so students will draw on history, literature, speeches and cultural changes – from scholarly texts to humor. The class is designed to empower students to confront the difficult and often thorny issues that surround us today and reach thoughtful conclusions rather than display gut reactions. Courses like that are in most colleges. A few years back a girl I work with brought a textbook of a required course her son had to take at a local college. Called Race, Gender and <something else, can't remember now>. White male bashing is what it was. To sum up the entire course in one short sentence: The root of all evil in the world is a direct result of white males.

Some comments:

I used "Race, Class, and Gender in the United States" for a recent class on Racism and Sexism and I found myself spending a considerable amount of time exploring articles outside of those assigned. The articles integrate with one another quite well and they provide a variety of perspectives. Perhaps the most valuable part of Rothenberg's compilation is its ability to simultaneously provide the historic framework of oppression while providing a cross-section of how concepts of race, class, and gender play out in today's society.

I had to buy this book for college. It is easy and interesting reading. The history it covers is amazing. I read a story about Pearl Harbor and was so touched by the story. As an African- American, it help me to understand that We were not the only race hated, discriminated against and treated badly, when I read the story, told by a Japanese teenager, I was brought to tears. This book enlightened me,for now when I think of the history of oppression it is not just confined to the walls of MY race anymore. I believe discrimination is all about Power, therefore, it can knock on anyone's door who do not fit Into the part of society that have the power, money and control. Great b

I remember reading something about that in that text. The whole premise in that section was the lilly white Germans were not interned like the filthy, yellow japs and it was all racist American white men that did it. Doesn't mention that the japs bombed the shit out of Pearl Harbor and the west coast of America was vulnerable. Roosevelt was not mentioned either. I asked my great uncle about it, he was around 20 when the attack happened and in the navy, and he said that America was petrified after December 7th and was worried about an invasion. Never mind the fact the Nazis had no way to invade the US. He fought the japs in WW2 and hated them to the day he died.

Rothenberg does a great job in compiling multiple sources in order to expose the inequality and oppression within the United States. The articles identify the oppressors and the oppressed in order to make the invisible visible. Race, class, and gender in the United States reveals that the possibility of achieving the "American dream" takes more than a strong work ethic and education, rather it means having many of the privileges and benefits that minorities and lower class citizens lack

Like I said... sounds like the book but I can't be sure.
