John Boehner Invites Israeli Prime Minister to Address Congress Next Month

The speaker requested in a letter Wednesday that Benjamin Netanyahu speak before a joint meeting of Congress in February.

President Obama warned Congress last night that he would veto any sanctions legislation on Iran, saying it would derail U.S. negotiations in the Middle East. But John Boehner isn't ready to sit out the battle over Iran's nuclear program, and on Wednesday, he invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address Congress next month.

"[Obama's] exact message to us was: 'Hold your fire.' He expects us to stand idly by and do nothing while he cuts a bad deal with Iran. Two words: 'Hell no!'" Boehner said during his weekly press briefing on Wednesday. "We're going to do no such thing."

Boehner said that he did not consult with the White House before extending the invitation to Netanyahu. A State Department spokesperson told The Washington Post's Jason Ukman that U.S. officials learned about the invitation from the speaker's office, not from Israel. And the White House is not happy. Press secretary Josh Earnest said Wednesday afternoon that Boehner's invitation is a breach of normal diplomatic protocol, the Associated Press reported. Typically, a country's leader would contact the White House before planning a visit to the United States, he said.

Earnest said the White House is reserving judgment about the invite until it finds out from Israeli officials what Netanyahu would say. Boehner's office confirmed that Netanyahu has accepted, and will give a speech to a joint session of Congress on Feb. 11. The date is significant: It's the 36th anniversary of the Iranian Revolution.

The Boehner decision is fairly unprecedented, especially if the bigger breach of protocol is not that the White House didn't know, but that the White House wasn't involved in the invitation.

Good!  Screw 'em (the WH). :whistling:

(CNN) -- Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is in Afghanistan on a multistop overseas trip for meetings with international leaders but with an eye on the U.S. presidential race back home.

Obama's trip, which includes visits to Iraq, Jordan, Israel, Germany, France and the United Kingdom, is intended to bolster his foreign policy credentials before U.S. voters.

"This is the campaign trail via satellite -- pictures for the rhetoric back home," CNN's Candy Crowley said, adding that the trip was intended to demonstrate that Obama was up to the job of taking a lead role on the international stage.

I remember thinking at the time, that I had never heard of another candidate doing this.

Well played, Mr Speaker...
"We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and then bid the geldings to be fruitful."

C.S. Lewis

A community may possess all the necessary moral qualifications, in so high a degree, as to be capable of self-government under the most adverse circumstances; while, on the other hand, another may be so sunk in ignorance and vice, as to be incapable of forming a conception of liberty, or of living, even when most favored by circumstances, under any other than an absolute and despotic government.

Yeah, I agree with wasp69 - well played, Mr. Speaker.

Here we have a head of state in Mr. Netanyahu, who has been repeatedly snubbed by The Loser. He's been invited to the U.S. by Boehner to talk to BOTH houses of Congress - on a date of significance.

Here's the thing -- when BOTH houses of Congress convene in the House chambers, it's a big deal.

What has recently happened in the House chamber involving both houses of Congress? Yep, you got it -- The Loser's own SOTU.

So Boehner, in one fell swoop, has stuck a finger in The Loser's eye by calling in another head of state to....

wait for it....

have another address -- this one....

State of the Situation vis a vis Iran.

SOTS  :lmao:

The key difference between what Pelousy did in Syria in 2007 and this is the head of state is coming HERE. Boehner isn't going to Israel.

I like this more and more with each passing minute.

Good job, Boehner. That's the first stop in a long trip for you to even remotely get back into good graces with the conservative base, but that's a good first stop.

Unlike the SOTU address, Bibi's speech will more than likely use the phrase "Radical Islam".

There is bipartisan support for a bill to quickly reestablish sanctions on Iran, if and only if the talks with Iran breaks down, or if Iran violates any agreement that is reached.

It is unfathomable to me that Obama says he will veto it because it would interfere with the talks going on.  How? It would not even come into play unless Iran backs out or violates and agreement.

Obama's foreign policy is, for better or worse, formulated at the nineteenth hole.
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

The President won't show support for our ally because of his ideological bent, so Congress will do so instead. Boehner scored some points in my book, and I hope this trend continues.

It kills me that they are so butthurt over Congress "going around" the White House; yet Obama has "gone around" Congress several times...and even said he would do it during the SOTU. Boehner finally giving him a dose of his own medicine...and Obama doesn't like the taste.

Kudos to Boehner.

My concern is that all this is a sop to the conservative base, and that beyond these symbolic moves, he will still legislate toward progressivism. Don't let up on your Reps holding their feet to the fire.
