Durham, N.C. — A "credible and serious security threat" was a primary reason that Duke University officials on Thursday abandoned plans to allow Islamic students to start broadcasting a weekly call to prayer from the Duke Chapel tower, a spokesman said.

The university announced plans Tuesday for members of the Duke Muslim Students Association to start the three-minute weekly call or chant, known as adhan or azan, on Friday afternoon.

The decision caused a national furor, with Franklin Graham, the son of evangelist Rev. Billy Graham and the head of the international relief organization Samaritan's Purse, posting on his Facebook page that followers of Islam are "butchering" people who don't share their beliefs and urging Duke alumni and supporters to withhold donations.

Duke University is a Methodist university and they were going to do Muslim prayer calls. Duke is a pretentious school.

Duke University is a Methodist university and they were going to do Muslim prayer calls. Duke is a pretentious school.

Just hazarding a guess here, but that entire Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area of NC is otherwise infested with liberals. Duke and other universities in that region bring a lot of them (most universities are themselves infested with liberals since that's what they do -- crank out more liberals), but Research Triangle Park attracts a lot of them too since it's become very much a mecca for corporations in regulated industry (pharma, med devices, contract research organizations, etc.).

I've done some research on NC, considering it as a possible retirement location. When you start going rural, it starts getting more and more red, but the blues have their hooks pretty firmly in the NC cities/built-up areas.
