A friend who was a life long liberal was excited when, after moving into his first new home, found out that one of the neighboring lots would be a Habitat Home.  I suspect he may have even done a little pounding himself as he fanaticized about the chance of meeting Jimmah the Great!!

Today he is a staunch conservative who tells me how right I was all those years I spent working on his salvation from liberalism.

Habitat built the house. In about six months it had been turned into a slum.   He was a very OCD type who had to watched the trash accumulate, weeds grow, a steady stream of people of questionable virtue come and go (sometimes  in the shrubs) as he watched his property values plummet knowing no one would want to buy next to such a hovel.

Since Gina brought it up, and there has been so much agreement, I would think it would be very interesting to see follow up staories on all the habitat for humanity homes.
I have heard very little of them in recent years.
I suspect the organization has come to the same conclusion that conservatives did a long time ago, predating the h4h organization.

Habitat for Humanity Begins Blitz Build in Gifford

Posted: Jun 02, 2014 9:38 PM CDT
Gifford -- Their homes were destroyed by a tornado in November, but now Gifford families are getting help to rebuild thanks to Habitat for Humanity's Blitz Build.

Ben Calhoun watched his roof blow away when a tornado touched down last November. Now, he's watching new walls go up.

"We've just slowly started rebuilding our lives, just slowly replacing all the things we lost," said Calhoun, who lived in the house with his wife and son. "Then we came across the Habitat opportunity, and it's just been amazing ever since."

Because the Calhouns are one of three Gifford families that will be moving back to an entirely new home, along with five others that are having their damaged houses restored, thanks to Habitat for Humanity's Blitz Build.

"Today we had about 75 people show up between the three houses that are working," said Habitat for Humanity Volunteer Manager, Kim Gollings. "Over the next two weeks, I will probably have about 300 volunteers that will be rotating in and out that are all coming here to pick up a hammer, put up siding, grab a paintbrush, whatever it needs."

These were homes damaged by a huge tornado last year.

There might be a dirrerence between building a house for someone who hasn't earned it, and rebuilding a house for someone who has.

Good find on H4H current events.
First I've heard of them in a decade or so.

I want this DUmmie to come over here and defend Jimmy Carter, Iran, economy, taxes, losing like a bitch in 1980. Come over DUmmie and prove me wrong.  :whatever:

I will be waiting for them.

I used to think that Carter was too smart to fall for a lot of half baked cockamamie lib ideas because he graduated from Annapolis and the Navy nuclear program.
Subsequently I discovered that while he attended the Naval nuclear program, he didn't graduate from it.
I remember the first report of Carter lamenting during his first campaign that he had lusted in his heart.
I thought...what an odd thing to disclose in a presidential campaign.
The only decent deed I have witnessed Carter enact is his homes for humanity.
But I'm not even sure that is such a good idea.
People should rarely ever be given something they didn't earn.
They just won't appreciate it like they should.

They actually do earn their house with Habitat for Humanity. They have to be debt free or have very little debt, show a consistent job history and they have to work on their house, as well as others being built in their area in their time off (it's a certain amount of hours but I don't remember how many). They work right alongside builders, plumbers and electricians. They have to make payments to their escrow account while their house is being built. They also make monthly mortgage payments. It's a great organization to volunteer for because the families benefiting want it enough to work for it. When you've put blood, sweat and tears into something, you appreciate it.

Then why have I seen all of them that I worked on or with turn to crap within a year?  I do agree that if you have to work for it you will take care of it so why are all these houses turning to crap?

(I will say that these houses, imo, aren't put together that well and there is not any type of customization).  They all are the same floor plan (where I have worked.

There is a reason they were homeless in the first place.

That I don't know. It makes no sense to work that hard on something and pay a mortgage each month to not care enough to take pride in home ownership.

I was really into that Habitat for Humanity and volunteered for a year building houses.  We would build this great house for these people and come back in 6 months and the house would be torn to shit.  I just couldn't believe they treated their homes that way. I stopped volunteering.
