Seabeyond is uncomfortable with Freedom of Speech
« on: January 11, 2015, 11:37:42 AM »
preface: another HOF thread. Mostly boring. The thread gets hijacked with girly squeals over kitties-still not funny enough to brink over here.
This is just a revealing exchange, liberals hate all opposition speech.

here is the thing. we have become such an ugly people, saying whatever offensive thing we want,

as we yell FREEDOM of SPEECH. screech it, even. talk about the shills.

yet, we have two recent OPs here in feminism that talks of the privilege of man, white/christian man, to continually and consistently, say nasty things to women and blacks, and we are all suppose to be fine with it, and limit our freedom of speech to accomodate his insults.

it is an interesting quandary to be had.

12. That +300 thread really bugged me

White People attempting explain what was racist to POC POC = person of color. Refers to a thread where 1stupidblackman thinks he is the only one who can define what is racist or not) is an embarrassment and a tragedy for any progressive. Same with defense of sexism and misogyny. It's over the top bizarre bullshit that shouldn't be tolerated. Freedom of speech? We have enough to object to what some bigoted asshole is saying. Sure doesn't stop them from saying it does it? Then they whine like a three year old--'you're taking my Fredom of speech away!' I want to tell they keep pouting, a birds gonna fly by and shit on their bottom lip

7. This: ^^^

We have the right, as a society, to define standards & say, no, we don't want that as our standard. Yes, it can be available, but limited, not widely distributed & out there for public consumption, as something to base our culture on. But the everything-for-profit model has taken 'freedom of speech' to the edge & now we live in a cesspool. I don't see anything changing until we change this predatory capitalistic model. You made a comment once, about how your oldest boy has a hard time finding young women who are not indoctrinated in the 'everything for a man' world view. It's so entrenched, even among our own sex, it will be a battle.

Just because you can say or do something, does that mean you should?

This from the people who applauded a Crucifix in urine and feces on Mother Mary and similar anti-Christian, anti-USA mearde while solemnly intoning "freedom of speech."

The hypocrisy is breathtaking.

As the old joke goes, if it weren't for double-standards they wouldn't have any standards at all!

Freedom of speech means a lot of things. It means the "other guy" has the same freedom. It means the "other guy" may use that freedom differently than "you" do. It means that there are limits - conspiring to commit murder is not protected speech - but much that could be deemed "offensive" by some person (or many persons) somewhere is protected speech. It means that the standard of "responsibility" to which "I" hold "myself" may not be followed - or may be rejected - by the "other guy".

How these characters avoided learning this in junior high or earlier is a mystery to me.

As for the "art" you referred to, despite the fear of "Christian Fundamentalists", Evangelicals, and Catholics professed by many Libs and Progs they know very well that they can do that sort of offensive @#$% without anything seriously unpleasant happening to them.
