But today it can be revealed that brothers Said, 34, and Cherif Kouachi, 32, were little more than dope-smoking thieves when they came to Paris 16 years ago after being raised as orphans in Renne.
Cherif once dreamed of being a rapper and even performed on a TV programme in 2005, but he soon turned away from that life towards a twisted world of extreme beliefs and, ultimately, mass murder.
At various points in his life he has worked as a fitness instructor, a pizza delivery boy and a fishmonger. But now he and his brother are being hunted across northern France by armed police after slaying 12 people in cold blood yesterday.
