To say that the majority of the population was in favor of slavery is wrong, because the majority, including the slaves themselves, along with freedmen, Native Americans, etc., were distinctly against slavery. Way to dismiss a large part of the population.

It was pointed out at the time that Phillips was killed by a gun owner, but this part was missed...
