This is why DUmmies will never, ever run a business of any size: their goal is to maximize the number of people working at a company, whereas responsible companies are interested in maximizing shareholder value. When a DUmmy sees cash EBITDA greater than the cost of wages and benefits, they demand that every cent of it be spent on hiring. When I see positive cash EBITDA, I start prying the business apart to see what may require more human capital and what can be cut.

HP is a textbook case of DUmmy management: not knowing exactly what they want to be, they hire and hire and hire until they realize that they're getting clobbered in the marketplace by more agile competition, and then they have to cut back. The DUmmies scream and whine, forgetting that Apple (their darling) has about 15% of the number of employees as HP.

But this is nonsense to a DUmmy: they think that even a job pushing a broom requires union representation, a full pension with paid healthcare, all on top of Social Security.

"We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and then bid the geldings to be fruitful."

C.S. Lewis

A community may possess all the necessary moral qualifications, in so high a degree, as to be capable of self-government under the most adverse circumstances; while, on the other hand, another may be so sunk in ignorance and vice, as to be incapable of forming a conception of liberty, or of living, even when most favored by circumstances, under any other than an absolute and despotic government.

John C Calhoun, "Disquisition on Government", 1840

HP has been in free fall for about 4 to 5 yrs. The two CEO's prior to Whitman weren't helpful at all in stemming the decent,in fact they both made decisions that added to HP's malaise. Whitman has been faced with making the tough calls to keep HP a viable entity.

Wasn't long ago consumers were laying down around $500 for a HP printer, just a printer and they were happy with the purchase. Now you can get an all-in-one printer , scanner, copier for under $100. hell you can get one for under $50 for general everyday home use.
It is said that branches draw their life from the vine. Each is separate yet all are one as they share one life giving stem . The Bible tells us we are called to a similar union in life, our lives with the life of God. We are incorporated into him; made sharers in his life. Apart from this union we can do nothing.

I the main problem with the company is that they charge you $50.00 a printer with the ink included, and then charge you $80.00 for the said printer ink refill. It is cheaper to just buy a new printer when you run out of ink.

Printers have become what is called Loss leaders , they make very little money off them. Ink cartridges carry about a 3000% mark up on them.

Yeah, but when you charge more for the ink refill than you do for the printer. Why not jut buy a new printer when you run out? You would think that they would realize that.

It's a safe bet someone is working on something that makes printers , as we know them, obsolete.

I can see that happening.

Something that's always puzzled me about printers and their ink, especially from HP.  Why is everything so damned specialized?  You have scour the aisles at Staples and read the tiny, tiny fine print to make sure you're getting the right one.  There are countless varieties.  Couldn't you manufacture these things at next to nothing if they were all standard or closer to it?
