I've heard radio caller say almost that very thing to people like Ed Schultz on the radio. One caller today said, "I'm middle class and my taxes went up two percent. Why shouldn't the state workers in Wisconsin have to pay half their insurance?"

They seem to forget that state workers typically work for less for those benefits, and they want to spread their personal to other middle class citizens.

They seem oblivious to the idea that the very rich and companies need to pay more, their fair share, because they still believe trickle down economics works.

It's a choice to put public employees benefits before your own ability to provide for your future.

dkf is ignored, but hit the nail on the head.  People are tired of subsidizing higher paid, better benefits state employees while they struggle on less.

The public unions in Wisconsin and elsewhere have made it clear that they are willing to negotiate about dollars and cents. That's not what this is about. It's about destroying the union movement, once and for all.

Sure, they're willing to negotiate, but only after they see a rising tidal wave of public opinion ready to crash down on them.

I belong to one.  I think they have outlasted their usefulness and overstayed their welcome.

I read this twice and I have absolutely no idea what she is saying here as it makes no sense whatsoever.   I misplaced my DU misfit brochure with handy pocket translation guide, so if anyone can fill me in that would be great..

What is killing local and state governments is the fact that for every public service person at work we the private sector are paying 4-5 times for all those on gold plated retirements.

BTW the average wage, not including benefits, of a WI teacher is $89,000. divide that by having to only work 9 months a year and you get an equivalent salary of $118,667.  Pretty damn good for never having to work overtime or meet a deadline....and taking paid sick days off to protest you are not making enough money.

WTF???? The only thing associated to collective bargaining is the healthcare and pension benefits! All he's sayin' is they have to be approved by the taxpayers who pay for them! Heaven forbid we put it to the people to decide what ya get in benefits! Wonder why they're so afraid of that?

Yeah yeah and I'm tired of this simpleminded shit, too. It goes hand-in-hand with the dumbass argument that you have to love government and socialism because it brought you public highways, police services and blah blah blah.

I've got nothing against unions in principle. People have a right to free association and to engage in collective bargaining with their employers, and there's no question in my mind that unions have contributed to some constructive laws regarding things like child labor, workplace safety, etc.

It's a matter of degree, and you'd think that moonbats with their professed ability to do "nuance" would get that. Just because some good things come out of an institution does not mean it receives carte blanche to do anything it wants. Unions can go too far just like governments can, and when those unions represent workers that are compensated by taxpayers we have the right to stand up and say enough is enough.

When unions representing workers in the private sector cause prices to go up, we are free to take our business elsewhere to non-unionized vendors or those with unions with more modest demands. With government there is no choice except the ballot box. Wisconsonites exercised their choice in electing officials to rein in expenses including public payrolls. Time to deal with it.
