He ate it!
« on: July 31, 2009, 10:51:24 AM »
Ok, I know that it will be hard for anyone to understand my sheer glee at this, but my son, the little guy who is autistic, 9, has never cared for meats...most protein of any kind. He's got a very sensitive gag reflex and he didn't like the texture. This included eggs, and for a long time cheeses and yogurts. He's also not a huge vegetable fan. So he survives mostly on carbs, but for a while would at least drink milk and eat some cheese for some kind of protein.

Well, I'll be damned if the little stinker all of a sudden has turned the corner after a round of fits over the summer to all of a sudden taken an interest in cooking and now other foods! Yesterday he tried bacon(at about half a piece, but this is a kid who would gag at the site of something like that a few months ago) and today...WOW! He went over and got the bowl of extra vegetables I had for my eggs(spinach, peppers, onions, roasted corn) and put ketchup on them and at a little bit of that and then said he wanted eggs...I went yeah right, but was thinking, I'll let him try anything..he needs too. Well not only did he try it, with small tentative bites at first, he ended up eating a whole small plate of scrambled eggs and a bit of a second helping!!!

I know this is a silly to some, but I can't tell you how this is such a huge progress for him. Autistic children can be very slow to try new things, routines, or any variation in their preconcieved idea of things. The fact he wants to try things lately is simply amazing and a huge step. I can't wait for him to start school again and hopefully this spirit of learning and trying new things will extend there! I'm so proud of him. It's only eggs, but it's huge for this family and for him! :hyper:

As a little brag he's also swimming better and learned to ride a bike like a pro this summer(he only learned in the last year how to bike ride). I'm so proud of him! He's getting he needs to reach out to that world around him to connect and enjoy things :-*

Congrats, jty.  I'm glad things are improving. :)

Our former pastor has a son who is profoundly autistic. I know first hand how big that can be.  That's great news.
If you want to worship an orange pile of garbage with a reckless disregard for everything, get on down to Arbys & try our loaded curly fries.

That's wonderful JT!!!!!

You must be jumping for joy!

Maybe this is a new start for him.

This time of year, veggies and fruit are such pretty colors....maybe that's what's attracting him.

Will he eat strawberries, pineapple, blueberries, watermelon or canteloupe? The brightly colored stuff?
Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

Save the Earth... it's the only planet with chocolate.

Thx guys(gals) for understanding how monumental this is for him. :cheersmate:

deb, he doesn't really care the colors, he won't eat it if he doesn't like the smell, texture, or appearance. He would eat bananas and canteloupe for a while, but never strawberries, watermelon, or any other kind of berry. The only thing remotely fruity he'll eat right now is applesauce. I'm hoping he might start getting enough variety now that he doesn't tire of certain things the way he does now because he eats them all the time.

I totally understand that...I am supposedly allergic to bananas...can't remember ever eating one, just was told when I was younger. But it really doesn't matter because I can't stand the smell, texture or taste. Texture is a real issue for me as I'm sure it is for a lot of people.

I made a fruit dip the other day for strawberries...it was super easy, if he likes the taste, he may get past the texture. Had some fresh pineapple too, but did not like it as well as on the strawberries.

I was making it up as I went along but essentially it was 8oz block of cream cheese, about 2/3c sour cream, 1/3c powdered sugar, 1T vanilla, and 1/2t of cinnamon. (I wasn't measuring, but those measurements are a place to start.) Mixed it all together with a mixer, so it was really smooth, but it's kind of thick almost to a frosting stage. I still have some in the fridge and it has kept really well. I was thinking it would be really good spread on oatmeal raisin cookies.

That is so awesome! I used to work with autistic kids and believe me, it gets fustusting when it comes to food. Congrads to both of you for this big milestone. Did you ever try smoothies? There was a 15 year old, the only way he would eat fruit and veggies was blended.

Ooh, I put butter pecan ice cream between homemade oatmeal raisin cookies for desert one time....OMG!!!!

I'll try anything with him. He stopped liking milk lately so I make it with chocolate in it which he will drink. So strange the flow of things for him. It's so different then what I'm used to with my other kids.

SO, we have done smoothies for him before and added egg protein to it for extra protein.

Jty this is great news!!! I am so happy for you! The things we take for granted....

Congrats! Here's wishing you more "adventures" with your son.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle
