More states are making porch piracy a felony


Is this a good thing or bad?

Leave it to DU to debate whether stealing property from private property is a serious crime

I mean, I know they're just considering what will happen when they get caught swiping things from their neighbors...

Most states classify felony theft as >$2,000. I can absolutely state that I've never had something dropped off valued more than a few hundred dollars and most of those required a signature.

I would be interested to know the mean and median value of such thefts.

I do think these thefts need to be prosecuted, though. Absolutely.

If I hold a gun to your head and it isn't loaded, should I get a pass on attempted murder? I know the mean and median of your IQ...it isn't impressive.

So not only do they think it's just fine to shoplift, and to loot (because those stores are run by The Man, who "owes" them), but they think it's pretty much ok to walk onto someone's property and walk off with property.

In other words DUmmies, you have NO idea what’s in those packages. Not to mention if people didn’t try to get something for nothing, the punishment wouldn’t matter.

Don’t think the death penalty should apply to property crimes, don’t try to break into a home where the owners are armed.

In California the misdemeanor-felony threshold is $950.

Some insurance plans reduce coverage for meds if one does not use their chosen package-delivery pharmacy service for long-term prescriptions.

This DU-thread was probably inspired by a Porch Piracy law passed in a state good little DUpipo hate, Georgia. From https://www.11alive.com/article/news/local/stealing-packages-a-felony-in-georgia/85-545570df-be8a-4179-861e-d64b561afa12 :

HB 94 states it is now a felony in the Peach State with prison time of up to five years for someone who is convicted theft by possession of stolen mail. According to the bill, someone can be charged with the crime by taking three or more packages, envelopes, or other related items from another person’s porch, steps, or mailbox without their permission.

The bill was signed by Gov. Brian Kemp on May 10 and went into effect on July 1.

The bill also says people who have at least 10 pieces of mail from at least three different addresses or mailboxes can be charged with felony theft by possession of stolen mail.

Each set of ten separate pieces of stolen mail addressed to three or more different places are considered separate crimes, according to the bill.

However, HB 94 gives judges discretion to rule that some cases be considered as a misdemeanor.
