Oh my.

I always look forward to the annual Alabama-Auburn game, a game fraught with history, tradition, glory, heritage and excitement; the best their conference has to offer, and it's very good.

Roll Tide, y'all although I hated to see Brantley injured. Takes away some of the joy of a beat down when the other team isn't at full strength.

Trent Richardson may well win the Heisman if things keep going the way they're going. Best player on the best team (we'll resolve that issue Nov 5), big time performances in nationally televised games, he's following Mark Ingram's path to the Downtown Athletic Club.

Alabama should really be moved ahead of Oklahoma at this point, given that we've dominated three ranked teams and Okie only one.

November 5 vs LSU is going to be HUGE. #1 vs what should be #2. Has that ever happened in a regular season conference game before?

That's happened a lot, #1 versus #2 in a regular season conference game.

It used to happen especially with Nebraska-Oklahoma.

DUmpmonkeys have a keen sense of history.
The last day of the 2006 season, Ohio State vs. Michigan, 11-0 vs. 11-0, #1 vs. #2, 42-39 Buckeyes.

Yeah.

The ignorance of the primitives is dumbfounding.

I dunno why, but the truemud primitive's been staying away from the college football campfires this season, and that might be a good thing, upping the "average" IQ of primitive college football fans with his absence.

We'll see.

I have certain affectionate sentiments about Alabama.

In fact, Alabama's always been my favorite team from the South.

The Bear Bryant effect, of course; Bear Bryant was the best coach, ever, in the history of collage football.

Woody Hayes runs a very close second, but is behind by a razor's edge.

In the family archives, in one of those dust-topped file-folder storage boxes, lies a personal letter from Bear Bryant to one of my older brothers.  I don't recall if it was from December 1978 or December 1979, though.

My brother had accused him of "ducking" Nebraska when bowl match-ups were made, and yes, Bear Bryant was getting a lot of criticism from the news media about ducking Nebraska in favor of a lesser opponent.

The Alabama coach was getting really lousy press on this issue.

In the letter to my brother however, Bear Bryant took the time and trouble to explain why Alabama was playing a team other than Nebraska in a bowl game that year; it's not a short letter, and it's very reasonable.

Now, if Bear Bryant had only confided these things to the press, rather than just to my brother, he wouldn't have gotten so much media flak back in December 1978 or December 1979, whenever it was.

I dunno why he didn't, because the gentleman was very reasonable about why Alabama wouldn't play Nebraska.
