(CNN) -- The alma mater of journalist Helen Thomas will not bestow an award that had been given in her name, making the decision after the 90-year-old scribe made more controversial comments about Jewish people.
Wayne State University, the Detroit, Michigan, institution that Thomas graduated from in 1942, said in a statement Friday that the school will no longer give out the Helen Thomas Spirit of Diversity in the Media Award.
"Wayne State encourages free speech and open dialogue, and respects diverse viewpoints," the school's statement said. "However, the university strongly condemns the anti-Semitic remarks made by Helen Thomas during a conference yesterday."

Of course, go over to Huffpo, commondreams, et al, and the basic reaction is one of surprise and the, "Well what did she say that was WRONG?" variety.

Time line, Helen Thomas graduated in 1942 at the time of the height of the WW2 era. I would say at that time she was a Nazi sympathiser and after the war and the grewsome acts were exposed she found a way to blame the Jews for their fate.
Little by little as she rose in the journalist world she specialised on Politics and became very close to our leaders and gained trust in Washington. For almost 60 years she could get the ear of anyone including our presidents, perhaps influence them here and there in one way or another.
She alone may have done more to push for the advancement of anti Jewish feelings in this country then anyone else.
This woman placed her storeys worded in a subliminal way to cause people, the everyday reader a sense of disquiet when Israel was mentioned.
An amazing woman, one that had 60 years to drop unrest into the anti-Jewis members.
What caused her to go bonkers on the eve of her 90 th. birthday is open to thought. Thank heaven we finally got to see the evil, learing face of a human who had became a mega star in her field.
Kama got in here, she still living, was not allowed to die a peacefull death, she was exposed by her own doing while she lives and has to face the scorn of those she betrayed for over half a century.
