got a nice haul from the farmer's market this morning

one of the stands has a deal where you can pack as much into a newspaper delivery bag as you can for ten dollars. scored at least three pounds of taters, a bunch of kale, two bunches of green onions and two bunches of asparagus. i also got a half-dozen tamales, a large tomato and honey.

not bad for my first trip of the season. i can't wait for the corn and peaches to come it.

3. some of the potatoes and asparagus are headed for the grill tomorrow

and the tomato will be sliced on the side. the tamales will make a couple meals, too.

we're on a budget, but i think i did a pretty good job with what we had.

^^^always worries about having enough money for groceries.

5. I'm so tired of paying $1.99/lb for yellow squash & zucchini--can't wait until the FM gets them in

Waaaay too early for Colorado home grown squash, but had hoped some of the growers might be supplementing with a little "hot house" growing..

7. 1.29 here, at the produce stand.

and scored a lovely medium size watermelon, for about 6.00.

a bit pricey, but I was really craving melon. It will last me a week.

they sell melons by the each, not by the pound.

Come July, monster melons will go for 6.00...so big I cannot even pick them up, and I have to cut it up and share with neighbors just to have enough room in the fridge.

8. Heirloom beans!

Yep, they're coming up...bumblebees, purple string beans, and carillion limas. We had suop almost everyday with very little that was not out of the garden. Best part? ANYBODY can grow 'em

9. Honey???

Heck, if I saw that deal, I'd pack the entire bag full of honey. It must be a lot cheaper out where you are. Around here, a single pound or so of honey runs $11.

By the way, I recently talked to a guy who keeps bees, both down in Texas and up here on the roof of Nebraska.

He explained that most of what we eat, requires bees to do something (I forget what) with the plants.  Without the bees doing that thing, we wouldn't have but maybe a quarter of the foods we have.

So I asked the inevitable question; why are bees becoming extinct?

He said that because of the primitive demand for perfect produce and cheap groceries, farmers are compelled to use some sorts of insecticides that kill bees.

Without those insecticides, there'd be no perfect produce, no cheap groceries.

And we have the primitives to blame for this.

Pollination.  Bees are required for pollination.

Crazy fiz never has money for food but always buys a lot and clearly eats a lot.
Soon carpenters will be nailing shingles and clapboards to her.

Pollination.  Bees are required for pollination.

Probably one of those words I didn't hear.

Comment as heard by hearing person: "Well, she had a really nice personality, but you know, her jugs were just too big to appeal."

Comment as "heard" by franksolich: "Wmmm she had mmmmm personmmmmm but mmmm mmmm jugs mmm mm mmmm bmmmm to appeal."

I do not understand "score" when referring to finding items of produce, potatoes, watermelon, etc., as mentioned in a couple of the DUmmy responses.

Perhaps it is an age thing.  I do understand "score" as being the "goal" of having sex way back as a young person.

I also remember when the Daytona stock car races were run partially on the beach. (edited to add that this line is a reference to age)

11. Hooray!

My favorite day the week is Farmers Market day.

Everything is still late here. No berries, few vegetables aside from leafy

I got:

radishes
scallions
flat leaf parsley
cilantro
big bunch of basil
snow peas
sugar snap peas
rhubarb
small yukon new potatoes

It's spring!

I am really hungry for cherries and stone fruits. Soon, soon.

Not necessarily pesticides, Frank. Seems there is a mite or fungus or something that is killing off the bees too. This has happened before many times. The pesticide thing is an attempt to kill off the neonicotinoid pesticide that has been used in some form since the 80's. There may or may not be a connection, I have no idea, but the mite/fungus is the main cause as far as I understand it. Some study done by some academics at Harvard and published in some journal supposedly points to a clear connection to the pesticide, but then we all know the watermelon academics are less than honest. See globull warming.

A couple of links... Wiki I know... sums it up pretty nicely though:

Taters & kale at the farmer's market? Have these people ever heard of Facebook?

Is it "testimony time" at the First Church of Organics and Vegans?

And isn't "taters" a redneck word?

Not sure but "frittata" absolutely is.

I haven't seen a honey bee around where I live in years and years.

Most of our garden pollinators are this tiny black fly that loves the squash and cucumber blossoms with a few butterflies and yellow jackets.

Apparently the corn and tomatoes only need the wind to get pollinated.

Not sure whose doing the green beans.  Need to check that out.

I think calling potatoes "t****s" is as repulsive as y***y or t***y.
