Title: I didn't like that car anyway
Post by: Chris_ on February 03, 2014, 04:57:43 PM
And another Camry bites the dust.

Waiting to see what the other driver's insurance company decides to do with my car.  In the meantime, I think I'm going to take a sick day tomorrow.  I'll need to find another ride to get to work.

It was completely unnecessary.  That kid was a dumbass.

I think the seat belt did a number on my ribs and chest.  I'm having trouble feeling my hands.

Might want to see a doctor.

Is there another thread that I missed about a wreck?

That doesn't sound good. You need to go to the Dr. or the ER.

No, this is it.

I spent three hours at the hospital and another hour waiting for a cab.  The doctor kept offering me all these ominous-sounding pain killers... I thought he was going to administer them right away so I kept saying no (I was still dizzy and my blood pressure was 180/120 when I got to the hospital).  He did write a prescription for some middle-of-the-road stuff.  I didn't really look at it because I just wanted to go home.

Were you asked any questions about numbness?

Sounds like you could have gotten whiplash.

I know the last thing you want to do right now is go to another doctor, but I would suggest going to a non ER doc tomorrow.  Whiplash is a bitch.

Well Chris coming from someone that has been in a few wrecks myself. I would look into going and getting a second opinion. Numbness is no joke and if at anytime your neck starts hurting you need to look into that. I have had whiplash twice and it was never fixed correctly. Needless to say I have neck and upper back problems. I am sorry to hear about your ride but at least no one was killed ( you especially ) and it wasn't even your favorite car anyway. ( inappropriate attempt to make you laugh )

No, I was not.

I'll have to make arrangements to see another doctor.  This is a little concerning.

I got my rental arranged for noon tomorrow.  $42/day for an intermediate (Ford Focus).

I didn't need this.  I didn't get this guy's information -- I was told his insurance would contact mine and I could follow up with them to get everything sorted out.  I know it usually takes a couple of days to get an estimate on damages and a decision if they will junk my car or repair it.

This was my winter beater.  I only paid $2000 for it.  All my money is in the MG and the Ford.

I did a search and apparently it's not that uncommon after an accident.  But you do need to get it checked out.

Chris, I agree with all that has been said so far.  Make an appointment to see a second MD.  That numbness needs to be checked out--it could be nothing, but it could be something bad.  Better to get it checked now.

And, it sounds as if the DUmbass kid failed to yield the right-of-way.  Hopefully, he won't go on to kill anyone and he'll learn his lesson now.

I spent five hours in the ER today. :whatever:

They wanted to do an MRI but Skyline Medical Center has no record of the shunt I was given in 2003 and both of the neurosurgeons have retired or moved.  Since it has metal parts (a motor and a mechanical arm), they declined to do one.  I finally spoke with a doctor that gave me a referral to a nerve specialist.  It's going to be a few uncomfortable days, but the numbness and tingling seems to have reduced since yesterday.  I have most of the feeling and movement back in my fingers, but my arms and hands still hurt.

Seriously, I'm glad you're ok.

I got hit by a car.  Cut me a break.

Yeah, it's a lousy vehicle.  Don't ever buy one.  The only positive side to it is that it's new.  I can't imagine one of these things in 15-20 years.

There is a hatchback 3 that I see on the interstate each day on my way to work.  I thought it looked nice for a small car.  I've never driven one.  What did you dislike about it?

There are some major nerves running from the spine through the shoulders to the arms and hands.  Is it both hands or one more than the other?  Did they put you on muscle relaxants or tell you to apply heat/cold?

None of the above.  I was prescribed what looks like narcotics (hydrocodone and phenergan).

It's more on the right side, less so on the left.  It's up in the armpit and goes down the arm next to the vein and into the hand.  The doctor I spoke to today gave me some long-winded name for that particular nerve that starts at the shoulder but it doesn't match what was on my release papers.  I'll have to wait until I see the specialist.

Now this could become very interesting.   Did you notify YOUR insurance company ??

Please don't be offended but had this come up at DU we would have tared and feathered the writer with questions such as,

How do you know the driver had not stolen the car that hit you.
You had to have made a statement to police at the scene, did you get the drivers name and address and the license plate no. of his/her car ?
Did you get the name and badge no. of the police officer that came to ask questions?

Why are you waiting for the others insurance company to contact YOU, what if this is an insurance scam ? You don't know who the other driver has insurance with ?

I realize that when an accident happens the people go into a semi-shock and find it difficult to believe what is going on. The sudden unexpected can and does cause people to at that time to try to sort out what happened but it is only days later they can recall what happened.

You were hurt by the other driver, what about them, they could be denying they were at fault for some reason and claiming some sort of disability due to YOUR negligence.

This is no time to sit back and wait for someone to lower the boom on you.   Never know , 6 months down the line and the other driver may sue you and hard as it is to believe win a Court Settlement that your insurance refuses to pay, these small fender benders can become a nightmare.

First mistake was not going to ER after the accident, make a paper trail, some injuries take a few days to weeks to show up.

Were you wearing a seat belt ?   These damn things will save your life but also injure you in many ways.

EX- father in law was an insurance adjuster, he told me of the scams people pull, Jumping frog legs Chris, I do not understand why  You with a fender bender unless you were carted off in an ambulance would not have gotten the information at scene from the other driver and given your own information to them.

If they want to continue paying for my rental, they're welcome to it.  I'll upgrade to something nicer.

I would start shopping for a comparable vehicle to the one you lost, so you can know if you're getting a square deal if they want to total it.  What year was that thing anyway?

1996 2.2

I've been through this before.  Normally, they'll low-ball you with NADA values.  They tried to give me $800 for my motorcycle when I paid $2700 for it.  I showed them the original bill of sale and got every penny back.

Not really.  The MG is in storage in Columbia.  Sure, it's driveable, but it's also 25 degrees outside.
The Honda is not registered.  Paperwork issues because the previous owner is a ****ing douchebag idiot.
The Ford doesn't have any interior lights and overheats.  It's an ongoing issue.  It IS driveable though.
Title: Re: I didn't like that car anyway

It sounds like the MG would be your most likely candidate if you had to resort to that.  I drove a B for four or five winters.  Your right foot will roast, and a stiff upper lip is no longer a figure of speech.

It's not bad if you can snag a cheap hardtop, though.

I have known two people that owned those and were less than impressed with their gas mileage.  If that's not important to you, I can report that they were satisfied otherwise.

I drove a co-worker's G35 and liked it, but I'm reluctant to buy a RWD car for daily use since my Datsun caught fire trying to get up a snow-covered hill.  I think that may have entirely been my fault, though. :p

Snow tires would probably help.  Also, not using vacuum hose in place of a high-pressure fuel line.

I'll be leaving work early to pick up some paperwork downtown and file a police report.  I'll grab my camera and stop by the wrecker's to take some pictures and get my stuff out of the car.

I can't do anything else until an adjuster contacts me, so it looks like I'm going to be sitting on my hands until then.

Sorry Chris, but no one  sits on their hands when it comes to an accident, you minding your own business finds your self in an accident due to another's fault.

We are talking big money here, your transportation and cost of it.   Get out there and find out what is going on at the police station, what you said and they said, there may be mistakes in your or their report.

Keep looking as you may find out just how hard the insurance company's play ball.

I know for a fact you need to keep a paper trail of any medical problems caused by the seat belts and what comes after due to delayed problems.

Good luck, and God's speeds.

Thanks.

I got a Nissan Versa.  Touchy brakes and I don't like the barstool-height seating position.  Lousy wiper blades, too.

It's a chick car, my wife owns one and I have to drive it sometimes. It has been reliable so it's not all bad.

Nothing to write home about.

I'm pretty sure it's the 6-cylinder.  It's a 2013 model.

It's a horrible piece of crap.  Blind spots everywhere, uncomfortable, and lousy interior layout.

At least the Mustang lets me fold down the headrests so I can see out the rear view mirror.  In the Versa, all I saw out of the back was the size of a mail slot with the front seat headrests blocking most of the window.

Both our cars have blind spots, the Camry we just got is horrible when backing up, worse than the Versa. I miss my truck.

The worst car I ever drove for blind spots was a Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe.

Second place goes to a '12 Volkswagen CC.  On top of the blind spots, when looking in the rear view mirror, the back glass looked like it was two miles behind you.  I absolutely loved everything else about it though, and I would purchase one if the opportunity presented itself.

The V6 in that Mustang is supposed to have 305HP.  Does it feel like 305HP?

I have a coworker with a Honda Fit.  The Fit/Matrix/Versa are all pretty similar.

What year is it?

I hate these new car designs.  They make the car worse than it needs to be.  Blind spots, tiny mirrors.  Lousy.

It's an 09, but I can't complain the price was right, and until I go back to work I don't need a truck anyway.

The EPA says this thing gets 19 miles per gallon.

I reset the trip meter when I picked it up... I'm getting about 13-15 since then.  I don't have numbers for the automatic version, but the manual is roughly 3700 lbs. with a full tank of gas and a driver and you can feel every pound.

Finally spoke with the insurance agent.  They're sending an adjuster out to look at my car today or tomorrow.

I'll be reimbursed for all out out-of-pocket expenses, missed work , and inconvenience (they said it was a percentage of my total reimbursment) but I only have a week to find a new car after the claim is closed.

Be very careful what you say or do around the adjusters.   These people make their living on keeping the claims as low as possible.

Note they on first visit will pull out a tape recorder as they question you on what happened.

They need to assess if you are going to sue or demand a big settlement.   It is a game of cat and mouse, what do you want and what do you deserve.

I sure will be glad to return this horrible Mustang.  For one, it's too damn heavy.  If they could cut a few hundred pounds off the car, they wouldn't have to put a 500hp V8 in there to make it interesting.

Save your money -- buy a 3-series.

You should start a thread on Wishadoo! and ask Stewart who he is using for disability.

MRI's are only subject to metal as it's basically a bazillion magnets bouncin' around a culvert. Should have no effect on plastic.

That's not a car.  That's 14 feet of beige.  :-)

I rented a Camry like that many moons ago to go on one of our trips to FL.  It was boring inside, but roomy, got good gas mileage (we averaged over 30MPG, and plenty of power for what it was.  You really can't go wrong with a Camry.

I will say the previous owner took excellent care of this car.  It's got a very pricey set of Pirelli tires.

I found one problem with the car (maybe two) and they might be related.  The driver window stops going up/down intermittently and the door speaker cuts in/out as well.  Minor problems.
