Oh my.

My usual reminder to the cooking and baking primitives that franksolich may be quiet, but silence doesn't mean I'm not paying attention to the seditious comments there.

PB & J. What's your best or favorite take on this classic?

Besides cereal it's a common snack for me. Morning, noon or night. Sometimes a meal, in and of itself.

What's your favorite PB & J medley?

^^^not to be confused with the light-in-the-loafers pintobean primitive, who's one of the cousin's critics and who the disgraced drug-addled Taverner primitive insists is one of us; this is a different primitive.

1. Nutella!!!

:puke: about as bad as chutney or vegemite or maggot cheese or potted meat or fermented salmon heads or jellied moose noses or fallopian tubes of frogs or spotted dick?--yes, these are real actual sandwich spreads.

2. well, not exactluy PB&J

I like to take multigrain crackers and put Lime marmalade and cream cheese on them. Yum. And invention of necessity because there was nothing else treat like in the house

<<<would skip the lime maramalade and just put the cream cheese on them.

No need to spoil good crackers and good cheese.

4. Prefer Almond butter to peanut

Then I add simply fruit spread (preferably apricot) on oat nut bread. Delish!

7. Apricot or peach are my favorites. Local store has date jam, it's killer.

<<<thinks apricot and peach jams might be okay, but prefers cherry, grape, strawberry, or corncob jam; date jam looks like it'd :puke:.

9. Peanut butter and seedless blackberry preserves on whole wheat bread.

Cut into strips and dunk into a glass of ice cold milk. Y*m!

Nope, nope, nope.

Not blackberries or chokecherries or blueberries or whatever berries.  Ew.

12. AB & H

almond butter and honey on white bread. slightly toasted of course.

<<<has never heard of this "almond butter" crap in life, and never having heard of it, not inclined to try it.

And white bread?  :puke:

13. Has anybody tried SunButter Natural Sunflower Seed Spread?

Sunflower seeds are for spitting, not spreading.

16. I have tried it. It looks like peanut butter and tastes just like sunflower seeds.

It's actually pretty good, but I just keep expecting it to be peanut butter.

15. So here's what you do.....

1st, toast the bread

Take one slice and using the knife you're going to spread the PB & J with, carefully cut just inside the crust, around the edge, through the outer layer or surface of the toast, just through that toasted outer layer so that you cut a square out. Gently go under this cut-out with the knife and separate it from the slice of bread. The middle of the slice is nice and warm and bread like, the other side is toasted but now you have created a well, if you will. The carrying capacity of the bread is now doubled.

Fill with preserves, spread PB on the other side, slap em' together and devour.

That little square you cut out? A tiny PB & J toast point.

How about just the basic peanut butter and jelly in a sandwich?

Why does it need to be more complicated than that?

I like crunchy peanut butter but the wife doesn't so you know what kind I'm eating.

Oh, I love peanut butter spread on hot pan cakes smothered with syrup and washed down with a cold glass of milk.

Only primitives could come up with so many ways to ruin a PB&J sandwich.   :puke:

I'm also certain that all of this 'almond spread' is a reaction to so many people believing that peanuts are killing everyone. Good for the marketers - as they find new and interesting way to monetize DUmmies.

There used to be a sandwich shop at the Mall of America that served only variations on the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, I think it was called PB&J or something like that.  I've tried and can recommend their peanut butter and jelly and banana sandwiches and their peanut butter and jelly and banana and bacon sandwiches.  They were good enough for the King of Rock and Roll they're good enough for me.

One of the best sandwiches that I've ever had was a grilled cheese sandwich with cashew butter and fig jam.  So rich and decadent.  I tried to duplicate it at home and it just wasn't the same.  I might need to do some more experimentation.

Almond butter has half the carbs of Smucker's Natural peanut butter, but it tastes like almonds. It's not a substitute for peanut butter.

Macadamia nut butter is carb-free. If you're not counting carbs, and like cookies, substitute macadamia nut butter in your favorite peanut butter cookie recipe. Add 1 cup of Nestle's Tollhouse chocolate chips to the dough. Ooooooh, yeah.

PB & J & B (bacon) is the only acceptable variation away from PB & J.

I'm not really into "funky" stuff like Nutella, however, once in a blue moon, I'll break down at Trader Joe's and pick up a jar of cookie butter.  Yeah, COOKIE butter.  Tastes like gingerbread cookies, and you really don't need jam or jelly for the sandwich.

But that's about as wild as I'll get.

J/K about the vodka, but the Uncrustables are pretty good.

Hazelnut and chocolate.  I've never had it but it looks like eating chocolate cake frosting right out of the jar.

I'll stick with peanut butter and strawberry jelly on white bread.

Nutella is good, I don't have it that often.

Almond butter has health benefits and is good for those that are allergic to peanuts.

So is blue cheese. It also doesn't belong on PBJ sandwiches.

It's OK.  I am not a big fan of sweets, so it doesn't do anything for me.

Guess I'll give it a try.  Supposed to spread it on bread?  Or maybe give it to a neighbor that has kids since it's "sweet"?

The people I know that gobble it up spread it on bread.

If you like chocolate, you might want to give it a try.  If you don't really care for any chocolate (like me), it might be best to just give it away.

Yeah, what Chris said.

If you're looking to diet, you might want to read the nutrition label.  I remember it being very fatty and loaded with calories.  My wife's one friend that chows down on that stuff all the time is rather on the large side.  I am sure the Nutella isn't helping.

Heathen.

I bought chocolate gelato and a hard-packed chocolate ice cream yesterday.  That gelato was so rich, I could only eat a few spoonfuls.  If it had been regular ice cream, I probably would have eaten the entire jar (or at least half of it).

Thanks for the advice.  I am a dark chocolate lover, but like chris_, want my chocolate to be chocolate.  As for the calories, no thanks.  I'd have to give up something else just to eat the Nutella.  I'll stick to real chocolate.  I'll give it to the kids.  ;)

Yeah, I hear that often.  I make up for it by eating twice as much bacon as I should.

I have never liked sweets much.  My mother used to have to hide her bouillon cubes when I was growing up, otherwise I would find them and eat them.

A few years ago my wife figured out that I was the cause of her bouillon cube shortage.  She switched to the granulated ones (which do NOT taste the same).

I still haven't forgiven her for that.

Spread on bananas it makes a nice little chocolatey dessert.  It isn't really a "sandwich" filling to me, but you could put it on toast.  It really is a bit like frosting.  Definitely in the treat category.

Nutella was sued once for it's claims it was part of a healthy breakfast.

The headline that caught my eye – "Nutella settles lawsuit" – took me back instantly to memories of slathering the product on real French bread. It was convenient. You spread it on like peanut butter, but it tasted so much better: chocolate with just the right essence of hazelnut.

Back then, it was touted as an after-school treat for European kids and hard to find in the United States. Now, it's marketed increasingly for breakfast for American children. That's what got its maker, Italy's Ferrero Group (which also makes Ferrero Chocolates and Tic Tacs), into trouble with US courts.

I was introduced to it in high school.  My french class used to order items from a local french bakery a few times a year.  One time a girl brought a jar of nutella and we spread it on our freshly baked baguettes.  So good

We had a shop open here that just had a sign "Gelato" in the window. It lasted about a year and a half before folding. It had tables outside in the summer but no customers. I was by there several times a week and saw almost zero customer traffic.  I doubt if one person in fifty, here in red state hell, knows what "gelato" is. Sounds kinda euro-weenie-ish
