No, this is not from some twisted version of The Onion. A whole panoply of social services is available only to people with AIDS.

That silver lining was a surprise to Fortner. And while it might seem counterintuitive, contracting the virus has made life easier for other young homeless men in New York City, who in return for developing full-blown AIDS gain a roof over their heads and basic services.
This cruel paradox — having to get really sick in order to enjoy a better, more comfortable life — has not gone unnoticed. “I have experienced people grateful that they have HIV,†says Sage Rivera, a research associate at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who has worked with hundreds of LGBT youth. “It’s sort of like a sigh of relief or an extra boost,†he says. “There are a whole bunch of different names for HIV within the community: ‘the monster,’ ‘the kitty,’ ‘the scratch,’ ‘the gift that keeps on giving.’ So people say, ‘I have the kitty — so now I can get my place. Now I can get hooked up; I can get my food stamps, I can get this, I can get that.’...
And it’s not just those who already have AIDS who view it as a lifeline; some young men who test negative aspire to contract the disease as a way out of trouble. Rivera knows at least one man who planned to have unprotected sex on purpose, an attitude he sums up thus: “My life is not getting better. I need a helping hand, and it seems like the only way I can get a helping hand is by getting sick.â€
For Fortner, the phenomenon of young men deliberately contracting HIV is dispiriting but not surprising. “When you’re on the streets every day — winter, summer, spring, and fall — and you find a way to have an apartment of your own, it looks better,†he says. His own experience is instructive: Once his AIDS was diagnosed, he was astonished at how much easier it was to live in New York City. “Right now the rent for my apartment is $1,150, but because I’m on the program I only pay $217, which leaves me with about $400 a month,†he says. “That’s still a struggle, but I feel gifted, because one way or another I pull through.â€

I would love to tell these people contemplating it, it's NOT worth it!
There is a misconception that managing AIDS now is easy with the advancements, what they don't tell you is with all the drugs pushed out in recent years there is no long term studies on the effects to the body. I started taking Atripla the day it came out in (and was taking Susteeva the main ingredient in Atripla before that). This life saving drug has wrecked havoc on my liver & kidneys. Management is not as easy as some people make it out to be.
Education all around is the best defense for all concerned.
Look at the bright side DUmmy, you get more freebies.

It just never occurs to them that the reason these men were homeless to begin with were a whole other series of bad life decisions that got them there and now they make yet another in that long series of mistakes. Spectacular dumbasses.As for society, it's damn pitiful that we have a society so consumed by having their own freetime and getting something for nothing and are so against working that they will prefer to get a damn life-threatening disease rather then get their hands dirty. I'm not one to shout "there oughta be a law!" because that's exactly what you get (along with all the unintended consequences it brings), but deliberately infecting yourself with a fatal, communicable disease for personal gain should be a crime.

Hate to break it to you but there lives won't be that much shorter. There are some indications that the drug cocktail makes people age faster but that's about it, near full life span with minimal other difficulties is the norm nowadays. This was turned into such a massive frenzy by Hollywood that we learned how to treat it very well in the county.
What makes this so sick is that AIDS should, by all rights, die out in this country in the next 40 years or so at the outside. What these stupid ass little dickheads are doing is setting us all up for a major mutation, possibly on par with what they have in Africa (where our first line drugs don't touch this bug). Again, like all progressive social engineering, like the ones that took the father out of the family, this is going to cause huge problems in the years to come.

Why is it that a male/female with Aids is not charged with premeditate murder when they have unprotected sex with a person that does not know the partner has Aids. ??

Odd that when Americans leave the country all kinds of shots are required depending where they are going. We call it the blue arm, if one wants to travel overseas to visit family with American born kids, these kids end up with the blue arm from all the shots.
If a woman breaks out in spots, covers them with makeup and goes to a clinic for pregnant woman and knowingly exposes the other woman to chicken pox, is she not responsible for the horrid outcome ?
Once a person has been diagnosed with aids they have a weapon in their hands. `They can kill at will.

You know as well as I do that death panels will define AIDS as a natural risk factor of homosexuality and, since homosexuality is genetically defined, any limits to benefits will be discrimination. If it isn't already, discrimination is the worst crime in the whole wide entire world.
And, to be honest, I don't expect there to be investigative journalists around for too much longer.

They have they no shame was never thought about they could prove the deceased had Aids.
A big problem and the family's went wild over this. This was a big problem back then, the insurance company's demanded health records of the deceased and jacked up the family's wanting to get the insurance of a loved one to be told that their loved ones had Aids and it would become public knowledge.
Most of us were outraged but for the 2 years or so the company's blackmailed the family's until they tried this with a very wealthy family with connections did they stop.
Only when they hit the political people and their family did they stop this.

Today we have STD's that cannot be cured, things keep mutating and becoming stronger from odd sources. A cold sour on the lips can mutate into Herpes with oral sex. When hubby gets a cold sore I kiss him on the bald spot in the top of his head. [ Never can tell when the old goat will want to get frisky and at my age I want to extend my sex life as long as I can.]

Yup, strange little problem we have had for eons. Way back when people thought a cold sore was a sign of scurvy and upped intake of oranges, limes and lemons. Sty's about the eye also were a problem.
Sometime in the 60's these were considered a Staff or Strep infection, contagious like Pink eye.
Seems all these things mutate differently in every ones body to be passed on and the new body has the problem of having no antibodies to fight them and they then mutate again in another body.
People have only so long before the antibiotics no longer work on these problems. Much like the changing of the FLU vaccine every year for a new strain that has mutated from last years concoction.
The dilemma here is how much antibiotics is enough and how much is too much. This goes for all medication from Chemo to the combo drugs that we need. Too much and we begin to reject the drug, as many of us are allergic to penicillin. Even topical ointments soaps and cleaners can used too often cause harm. [ PHYSOHEX] spelling ? was removed in the early 70,s to be used in Children's nursery's. in the hospitals.
Thalidomide a considered safe drug, a nightmare for parents and their children. When this broke upon the scene I had no children I was still a youngster, but the pictures in Life magazine were enough to when I did marry and become pregnant make me cautious of drugs.
Unfortunately I at 3-4 months pregnant developed an ear infection and the Doctor gave me Tetracycline and my first baby was born with little enamel on her future teeth, baby or adult.
Yes I am one to wash my hands 10 times a day and wipe down my counter tops in kitchen and bathroom with bleach and water. However I wonder when the nasty's we cannot see will not get so use to this they can mutate to become stronger and over come every thing from Clorox to hydrogen peroxide.
