Women of DU: if a man holds a door open for you, how do you know if it's benevolent sexism?

Assuming that he doesn't say something quaint like "ladies first," and otherwise lacking a longitudinal survey of the man's behavior, how would you identify this one event as sexism instead of basic courtesy?

These are the people who say that we need to teach young men not to rape women. Yet they throw a fit if you have traditional gentlemen attributes, like that womyn who threw a fit that her son said they let the girls use the bathrooms first before nap time. I'm not saying this attitude is making men rape women, but the fact that they piss and moan about what we were taught as good old fashioned manners must play a part in the disrespect of women that we see today, not to mention how in this past election women were portrayed as walking vaginas by the democrats.

1. I don't know

but when I'm 100 feet behind and some guys turns and looks down the parking lot and sees me coming and waits for me to finally reach the door holding it open all along, it pisses me off.

Why, because I felt I needed to rush so as not to inconvenience them any longer for holding the door for little ole me.

Happens more often than you would think.

You know if someone holds a door for me, and I'm a man, I don't get all pissy saying that somehow it threatens my manhood if someone holds a freaking door open.

Here's a tip for you DUmmy, odds are good if a man holds a door open for your skanky ass you probably don't have to worry about him raping you. It means he was taught manners and how to treat women like people instead of a walking vagina.

3. I'm not getting this whole thing.

Who cares what you call it, and why all the brain power to define it? How about perhaps it's just about manners, or how someone was raised?
And I don't care if a stranger doesn't hold the door open either. I don't analyze people's intentions, or lack of.

It probably means they raised as a fundy and by holding the door they are making a statement that you are the weaker sex.  :-)

Seriously it's nice to see a little common sense from a DUmmy.

7. Thank you.

A very sensible response to this topic.

I thought at first that DUmmy Orrex agreed with the premise he set, but it appears he brought it up to find out how many of the DUmmy womyn felt that way. So far only the one DUmmyette expressed a problem with fundy men holding a door open.

It just blow my mind that anyone could find fault with someone just showing a common freaking courtesy, hell I hold the door open for anyone that is approaching the door when I am there, doesn't matter who they are, if we get to the door about the same time I wave them in then go in myself, and other times the other person will hold the door. It's like if I am at the grocery store with a cart full of stuff and someone gets behind me with 2 items, I let them go ahead of me. It's what civil decent people do. I'm sure someday a DUmmyette will be offended if I do that.

Freeps, I'm with you. I just think it is a common courtesy. I have held the door for men, women, women with strollers and babies, older males and females, etc. i just feel like if they are close enough and you let the door go, it's like slamming the door in someone's face; it's rude. That they would find some innate sexism in this is mind-boggling considering I'm not the only person I've seen who holds the door for all walks and makes of people.

88. Maybe the guy should hold the door shut and see if she can open it?

Me, I hold the door for whoever happens to be behind me.

Except Frank from accounting. He's an asshole.

Over here in Flyover Jesusland, not only do we teach our sons to hold doors for women, we teach all our kids to bold doors for anyone coming. And we thank those that hold the doors. No wonder DUmmies hate it here.

Some folks just need to be oppressed by someone, even if they have to make up the oppression. We see that with the so called black political leaders all the time. They make up reasons for their feelings to be hurt so they whip up people into a frenzy and they make money off of it.

I do that here, west of the Hudson and north of the Mohawk.  I had one young woman give me crap about it about twelve or thirteen years ago, on a bus where I got up and offered her my seat (on a hot summer day).  She refused with a sneer, so I said, "Excuse me for thinking that you were a lady worthy of my respect!"  Another young woman gladly took the seat.

I don't think the feminists have progressed that far.  They haven't had classes, seminars and grant studies on it yet.

My guess is that the assumption would be that the straight woman is a bigot and the lesbian was only being polite.

Hi 5 and well put Dori! Of course the Straight person is the bigot because she is not in touch with the She/He/IT's feelings! If they weren't so d**n serious about this it would be funny. THis is the kind of stuff you expect out of the onion.  :banghead:

What an issue in which to get all worked up over.  Why can't they use the time they spent talking about this non-sense taking care of the poor, etc... they claim to have so much compassion for?  Oh, that's right, that's for the gov't to do through taxing rich people and not for the primitive intelligensia.

I'm with Carl.  Let me know you're a kook and I'll gladly let the door slam in your face.

I can't find the red-faced smilie right now.  :) :cheersmate:

I truly appreciate that. Been a rough go and it's nice to get the 'atta girls' I've had from some of my friends here who know me better :cheersmate:

As for the dump harpys...they are just pitifully hilarious. I am sad to say I have a very good friend and when I say that I mean has had my back like nobody else up here when I've been a in  pinch save for my mother(for those who don't know I'm a transplant in my ex husband's land so I'm about 1200 miles from my extended family and long time friends). Well the thing is I can't stand talking to her for any length of time on anything of substance anymore. She gave up an educational path of physical therapy to pursue social work and women's studies....she sounds just like those morons over at the dump regarding this issue. Her ex is out of a job and on unemployment, her mortgage gets further and further behind, she isn't working and she wants to talk about stupid crap like 'benevolent sexism'. I told her in a recent discussion that she'd do more to empower herself by looking for a job and that her 'sexist oppressive' ex husband was the one paying all her bills while she went to school before he lost his job. I think she didn't like me for a few minutes anyway.  :-)

I think that from now on before I open the door for some lady I'll ask "Are you a feminist?" If they say no I'll open the door. If they say yes I'll just go through it in a small opening and close it behind myself.

The paradox of all this is that my experience with left leaning women is that when it comes to relationships, and equality puts them at a disadvantaged place regarding rejection or sacrifice, feminism is thrown out the window instantly.
They are the most lazy, entitled feeling bunch of screaming scrunts who want a man to grovel at their feet to make them feel good one can ever imagine.

Leftism is a plague on humanity. I had a waitress berate the hell out of me in a favorite restaurant/bar when I was going to Fairbanks, Alaska working on Ft. Wainwright. What was the "ZOMG! When I was dating actively I actually told my girlfriends that when it came to opening doors and pulling chairs out for them I would do it. all of them never expected it since guys they dated never did that for them. Some even told me that the guys would tell them they could do it themselves. Shameful on my generation. Think I'm the token Gentleman of my Generation.

So if I hold the door for a black woman, am I being sexist or racist?

OMG I just saw this thread.  What scrunts!  I hold doors open for people all the time, men, women and children.  If I see you coming I will wait and hold the door open.  It's really pathetic that when I hold the door open for an elder they are shocked and say "Why Thank you!".   it shouldn't be that way now, that being courteous warrants a shocked expression.

Depends. Is it a month with an A in it?

Where are you in relation to the equator?

Did you hold the door with your right or left hand?

Is the door an ingress or an egress?

There's a whole formula.

And it changes at times, based on moon phase and sunspot activity.
