Great idea, and I thank you, Mr Mannn.
We really need to hit 1,000,000 posts by December 30, the fifth anniversary of conservativecave, but what with the holiday weekend, it's going to be difficult.
Every little bit helps, folks; so please post those images.

Don't worry about it.
Anyway, while I'm sure there are other intense experiences, the main gun on an m1a2 comes to mind.
Crouching under a jet engine doing 3rd stage after burner and having to reach up with an allen wrench to tweak the EEC is one of them.

A 2-8-8-8-4, probably from the Chesapeake & Ohio railway, or the Baltimore & Ohio, or the Norfolk & Western, or the Western Maryland. I don't believe it came into frequent use, and was actually cut in half to make two smaller, more practical locomotives.
For some reason, the four abovementioned roads tried elephantine locomotives, and some of them actually worked, but I've always been mystified.
The Union Pacific's 4-8-8-4 had the straightaway and generally level terrain of Nebraska and eastern Wyoming (where they were used) on which to run. It's been a very long time since I've seen the mountains of Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia, but I remember them as looking somewhat too daunting for large locomotives, but somehow these four eastern roads found some big models usable.

By the way Mr Mannn, thanks for doing this.
We're up to 164 comments for the day thus far, as compared with the daily average of 553.
The "day" on conservativecave ends at 3:00 a.m. central time; I dunno why.
We got to hit at least the daily average to get to 1,000,000 comments by December 30, the 5th anniversary of conservativecave.
I'm not up to posting any more pictures of primitives on the comment-accumulating thread in the Sandhills forum, but maybe tomorrow.

Looked it up. Turns out the flag has been around since the 50s as the flag of the Council of Europe before it was adopted by the EU. Guess they were too lazy to come up with their own flag.

While I was there at Sardinia, we Americans took a bus trip to a beach.
I don't remember which beach.
But while we were there we were with brits.
On the beach the Brits played rugby on their side of the ball and we played american football.
We killed them.
On the way back to base we stopped for a snack.
I got a ham samich. I have never got so sick in my life since then.
I spent the next 2 days puking.
Just outside of the front gate there was a grill that served up horse steaks, I had lunch there every day and it was fricken Delicious .

And he did it without Obamacare, a veterans administration, retirement benefits, or social security.
This is a man who wanted to be free of a tyrant. He knew the price and fought for it, in spite of being 80 years old.
Socialists out to learn from this. There are still patriots out there who will fight them.

Great idea, and I thank you, Mr Mannn.
We really need to hit 1,000,000 posts by December 30, the fifth anniversary of conservativecave, but what with the holiday weekend, it's going to be difficult.
Every little bit helps, folks; so please post those images.
How close are we?
-
How close are we?
At the moment, we're 7,473 short, and because of the impending holiday, I'm now starting to doubt we'll make it by December 30. Maybe under the best possible case, by January 1.
I suppose it was unrealistic of me to think we could make it, but hey, everybody keep commenting, please.
As we near the magic 1,000,000, I'll alert everybody to watch to see who makes the one-millionth post here.
-
For those who aren't aware of it, today's really really really slow on conservativecave.
There's been 10 new topics posted and 133 comments.
As compared with the daily average of 41 new topics and 553 comments.
But no complaints; the reason it's slow is because many are out in real life doing important things.

Durham Cathedral.
Also designed as a castle to guard against the Scots across the river.
The bishop of Durham was always named a prince, part of the royal court (even if of low lineage), so as to ensure his loyalty to London.
-
(http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g419/Eferrari/Coventry.jpg)
Coventry Cathedral, dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel.
This was my least-favorite cathedral in England. They purposely built it as "modern art" rather than the way it'd been before it was destroyed by bombing in 1940. I think they would've done better to simply try to replicate the medieval original.
-
(http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g419/Eferrari/Liverpool.jpg)
Liverpool Cathedral.
It has the second-longest apse in the world, after St. Peter's in Rome.
It's not medieval or anything; most of it was put up during the 1800s, the Victorian era; Liverpool hardly existed in medieval times.

Westminster Cathedral, not to be confused with Westminster Abbey, which isn't a cathedral.
When built in 1905, so as to not "compete" with the Norman and Gothic architecture of the established Anglican Church, the Catholics decided to put up something entirely different.
It's modeled after Santa Sophia in Constantinople. On the inside, it even looks Arabic.
-
Westminster Cathedral wasn't touched by a bomb during the London Blitz of 1940 because, unfortunately, its tower provided a landmark for the Luftwaffe, guiding them where to turn so as to bomb other areas.

Only in Nordern Minnesnowta! ......This guy raised an abandoned moose calf with his Horses, and believe it or not, he has trained it for lumber removal and other hauling tasks. Given the 2,000 pounds of robust muscle, and the splayed, grippy hooves, he claims it is the best work animal he has. He says the secret to keeping the moose around is a sweet salt lick, although, during the rut he disappears for a couple of weeks, but always comes home....Impressive !!

I rarely worry what the motor drives. We work on just about any motors from ones the size of a coke can up to ones that you can stand in. We have customers spread out throughout Illinois, some in Missouri , Indiana, and Iowa.
We do work for a wide range of customers: ADM, Caterpillar, Bridgestone, Kraft Foods and lots of other smaller companies.

That was a 460v motor, 4160v wouldn't be "mush" wound.
We do a lot of 2300v and 4160v jobs, some as small as that one, but wound differently. We've done very few of the very high voltage motors because there many around here, and they take a lot more man hours. We're also limited by space, unfortunately.

The original Queen Mary, built during the early 1930s, was meant to be named the Queen Victoria.
Since it was at the time to be the largest and fastest passenger ship in the world, Cunard wanted the wife of George V of England to christen it.
The wife of George V was Mary of Teck.
So, the chairman of Cunard telephoned the king, asking if his wife would be willing to smash the bottle.
He said yeah, sure, and by the way, what're you going to name it?
The chairman of Cunard said, "We're naming it after the greatest queen of England."
That's good, said George V; "the Queen Mary?"

Thanks for the info. I don't get to play with the internals very much for a couple of reasons. First, if they're broke, we send them out, second, I'm in the protective relay side of the house, so I play with them less than others.
Megger or Baker test them, and let them run. Strange how I've seen 480 motors that are bigger (physically and HP rating) than some 4160 motors.

I've seen 150hP, 4160 volt, 1800 rpm in a 449 frame, but at the same time that motor could fit inside the stator of a motor with the same ratings. Older U-frame motors were bigger than the current T-frames for the same horse power.

That is an electric motor in the process of having the wire windings replaced. IIRC, that was either a 250 or 300 hP 3 phase motor.

That's got to be the Cleveland Orchestra. I recognize the associate principal second violinist (the guy who's looking up at that balloon thingie). He's Emilio Llinas, a most pompous ass but a terrific player.
He was the concertmaster of the Suburban Symphony, a community orchestra in which I played bass trombone for a couple of seasons - 2005 to 2006.

Hey, I want to thank everybody for giving their best shot, but unfortunately because it's Christmas, traffic here's going to be way down. We still need 6,900 more comments before we hit 1,000,000, and it's no longer realistic to expect to reach it by December 30, the fifth anniversary of conservativecave.
But thanks to all of you, we should reach that mark shortly thereafter.
I'll keep monitoring the posting situation, and announce all over conservativecave as we approach 1,000,000, so we can all see who makes the millionth post (no, I myself don't plan to).
But in the meantime, remember that any member or lurker can also keep track.
^^^from the main forum page of conservativecave, under FORUM STATS, where this image shows "988878 posts;" obviously this screen-capture's from some time ago.
And again, I thank you all!
You're all wonderful people here, and a Merry Christmas!

You've got a shitload of PPE there, Sparky.
'Course I've had a scant amount of arc flash training and the term "racking breakers" came up in a film clip. I don't know if those poor bastards survived -- they weren't wearing PPE and the explosion that resulted was not pretty.

I know which one you're talking about, I believe--and IIRC, no, they didn't. And I'm not sure I'd want to after getting burned that bad.
ETA: Those are "only" 25-calorie suits. We have suits that go up to 100 calories. And hoods.

In March 2000, Mrs E and I drove west along I-80 through Wyoming in a 2000 Saturn that had less than 1,000 miles on it. I swear to God I had the wheel cranked over to 2 o'clock to counteract the wind. I knew it wasn't bad wheel alignment - the wind was simply that strong. Damn.

I met his mom! A friend of mine bought the house on the other side. It needed a lot of work. She and her dad did most, if not all the remodel themselves.
Anyway, Mr. Bird's mom always had a nice word of encouragement for us as we tried to figure things out. Mostly over milkshakes on the porch. French Lick is a pretty little town, I thought.

Big Tex is being rebuilt. His new clothes go into production in June. His new debut will be September 27, 2013.

The photo was taken while riding on a train starting at the Indiana Railway Museum. It's one of the landmarks that are announced. French Lick has changed inrecent years with the opening of the casino. There are other things to do as well. They have an indoor karting track that is fun too.

I imagine it has changed. That had to be around 1980 when I was there.
I got tired of traveling with race horses. A new place every few days. Hardly knew where I was when I'd get there, and breakfast and supper were tasting the same... I knew how to tune pianos (kind of, because of a relative), so I took a few months off and tuned at the Kimball spinet plant until I caught up with myself again. Pretty country and met a lot of nice people there.
Well that was random! :thatsright:
Edited to add a photo of one of my favorite tracks (Churchill) this past November, since a) this is a photo thread, and, b) to somehow tie my random info in to... something.
