Breadfruit . . . does anyone have any experience with it?

I bought one today for the lofty sum of 99¢, never having seen one before and not knowing a damned thing about them - except that they're a staple in some cultures and a treat in others.

1. I had it one time in Tahiti as part of a Luau. Prepared traditionally on hot coals and buried. It was one of the grossest things I've ever tasted but the Polynesians love it, so each his own I guess. Never had any experience preparing it.

Apparently that's all the help the sparkling old dude's going to get from his fellow primitives.

The score thus far:

The sparkling old dude's campfire on Skins's island after one hour: 27 views, one reply.

The sparkling old dude's campfire here in the DUmpster: just underway.

Breadfruit. Disgusting stuff.

Cutting down the trees makes for a good way to gum up your chainsaw.

There is however, some limited entertainment value in sitting back at 300 yards and popping the fruit with a large rifle.

I was going to say I had raisen bread a few times, I assumed breadfruit was like that, but it isn't.

You wouldn't get to within 50 yards and pop 'em with a 12 gauge slug? :???:

Probably could. Don't own a shotgun though.

Smells like poo, that was enough to turn me away from tasting it.

Don't own a shotgun though.

That would be a good reason . . .

All I know about breadfruit is what I learned from Mutiny On The Bounty.

The version with Marlon Brando was the best one, IMHO.

2008, vacation to Kauai. Wife thinks breadfruit is supposed to taste like an artichoke. She was wrong.  :hammer:

What does it taste like?  I've read about it but never seen, smelled, or eaten one.

edit: Hm.  Looks like a horse apple.

Hmmm, if horse apple = hedge apple, then when I was a kid, we used them to keep the vermin out of the basement.......(http://www.conservativecave.com/Smileys/default/rotf.gif)

It's an interesting tree that has a lot of uses.  Don't think I would like to eat the fruit though.   :p

Mystery solved...not the same, but similar...

Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis)

Osage Orange, Hedge Apple or Horse Apple (Maclura pomifera)

...but solve world hunger? I guess that when you're hungry, you'll eat anything!

Is that some sort of East Coast euphemism for gay, male prostitute?

Pretty bland and starchy. Put it this way, the things are all over the island, but I never saw anyone eating them.
