Anyone here had experience getting rid of a skunk visitor?

1. Yes

I had a female find a way under my house during mating season. Lured her out, trapped and relocated her. Along with 7 of her friends. They're easy to catch with a HavaHart live trap.
Relatively easy to transport as long as you move very slowly.

What exactly is your problem?

2. We live back in the woods on a small farm and at least one skunk has been visiting us around the same time every night.

3. They usually only spray in response to threat from a predator or in a territorial dispute.

Are there dogs around?

Should you try to trap it, you'll likely go a few rounds first with raccoon or possum first, pending your region.

Skunks are quite shy, retiring and rarely bothersome. With few enemies, they pretty much go where they want.

Light and noise will often keep them away.

Have you seen it? Or just smelled it?

If you can spot it, you might try a slingshot, or pellet gun to scare in away from your home.

As the scent carries quite far, it might be anywhere.

If spraying is a regular occurrence, it's likely a territory issue between rivals. Mating season is generally around February here in the Southeast.

I've used commercial repellents with limited success, but reducing the local population will indeed do the job. Trapping is not difficult, should you want to try it I'll tell you of my experiences.

4. So far we have only smelled the scent. No real spraying. There was a racoon in the area also last night. Actually saw him.

5. Perhaps the two aren't getting along.

Do you put out bird or other feeders? I've seen disputes over seed on occasion.

Don't leave dog or cat food out. That will attract them both.

If the scent is not very close (as in overpowering) there's probably little you can do.

6. We do feed the birds, outside cats, a dog and other farm animals. I personally think the skunk is just walking through so far. We are going to try some of the natural things that are suggested on line first.

Question.

How come franksolich, who lives out in nature at its most raw, out in the middle of nowhere, teeming with all sorts of flora and fauna, doesn't have problems like the primitives do?

About the worst is when the bald eagles come in mid-summer, but because of the Great Barack Drought of '12, there were no such vultures around this year.

Other than that, no problems.

Just sign the3 skunk up for a DU acct, and sign him up for the disability band wagon.
The skunk will move to the city and leave you alone.
We get a new DUmmy to quote. win win

That's a pretty good idea.  The skunk could take the place of that now collection of bones in the back of a rusty buick, bobbolink.

I bet the skunk would smell better than the dead or alive version of bobbolink.

It is an honor for a DUmmie to get sprayed by a skunk.

What is the issue here?

And I imagine at the same time on a place known as SkunkUnderground you can hear/read: anyone here had experience getting rid of a stinking smelly liberal visitor?

And a wizened old skunk answers: offer it a job that requires work.

It might improve it's usual odor.

I wonder if skunks hate the smell of DUmmy?

Somewhere, there is a skunk posting on a forum somewhere asking about how to get rid of a DUmmie in the house...

^^ But ChuckJ said it first.   :-)

DUmmie lives out in the country.  Critters are a fact of the landscape.  Live and let live, DUmmie.  Move to the city if you're going to be so hostile towards the environment.  I'm an excellent steward of my little corner of the earth, and all who live on it.  Why do you hate the planet, DUmmie?

I live in a small city, but that doesn't prevent nature from visiting. I've seen deer, groundhogs, opossum, raccoon, foxes, and even skunks in the neighborhood.

For any lurking DUmmy with skunk problems:

You will notice that skunks are not very wary, nor do they move very quickly.

If you spot one in your backyard, rummaging under a bird feeder or just prospecting for grubs, be fast.

Run directly toward the skunk as fast as you can. Chances are the skunk will not even try to escape.

Before the skunk can decide whether to spray (they are very slow-witted), grab it by the tail and begin swinging it around.

While swinging the skunk by its tail, move to a tree, the side of your house, or your motor vehicle.

Swing the skunk briskly against that solid object, and it will be instantly dispatched.

You can then bury the pest or dispose of it in a garbage bag.

Suffice it to say, your skunk problem will be solved.

Only approach the skunk when both ends of it are facing towards you. That way you will not frighten it when you get near. When it raises its tail that is your sign to move in closer.

I have had excellent results with a have a heart trap and a rain barrel. And for the environmental DUmmies yes it is reusable.

I got up early to go to work one day and noticed a skunk in the middle of the street running in circles and bumping into the curb.

Rabies I assumed, so I called the local police to report a rabid skunk in the vicinity of the children's school bus stop.   The kids were due to leave the house in 20+ minutes so I waited for someone to remove the critter.   No one came, I was late to work and the kids missed the bus.    So I called again and waited another 30 minutes and finally sneak the kids out the back door and into the car to drive them to school, then I drove to work.

That night returning home neighbors told me the police never showed up, 2 teenagers had grabbed a blanket and captured the Skunk and found it had its head stuck in a Youget container and could not see where it was going.     Poor skunk was so discombobulated it ran off when the container was removed and forgot to spray anything.

Cheers to the brave 13 year old and a big fat juicy raspberry to our brave police department.

I'm going to post a strange piece of trivia about my personal life.

My husband is a skunk whisperer, has been his whole life.  Vesta, he would have gotten the yogurt container off, and the critter would probably have followed him home.

 :lmao:

Sounds like my sons wife's ex-husband.   Amazing man, he can call in hunting owls,  the big suckers at night. He needs no man made turkey callers he can do the call as with the owls with his voice.    Duck hunting, while his buddies sit and blow on wood duck calls and the ducks keep a flying  he can with his voice draw them in to the decoys.

Honey I dated a man like your Skunk Whisperer, only problems was the Skunks that followed him home walked on two feet, under age and on drugs.  And yes they did have an odor that ran my dogs out in fear.----With me running right behind the dogs.

Lucky you to have your man followed home by 4 footed critters, I can handle those with 4 feet but I can not handle a Snake Whisperer, even as one Grandfather had a pet garden snake that lived under the porch steps and he would bang on the steps to set up vibrations and the little fella would come out and he fed them big juicy worms.

Karin, is your husband by any chance French ???
