Hello form the hot, hot, hot campground at Big Cabin, Oklahoma. :fuelfire: Trip's going well so far, taking photos along old RT US66 when possible. Every day so far the truck's engine was not shut down from startup in the morning until we were at the campgrounds, even when refueling - the dogs must be taken care of.
-
When I was in the AF in the late fifties and early sixties, Big Cabin was always one of my favorite stops 'tween San Antonio and Kansas City. Really good burgers at a stop there just at the cut over to US71 in Missouri. Wonder if it's still there.........

Fun trip! Please keep us posted with your updates! Reading about your trip is probably the closest I will get to a vacation this year. :)

I'll try. The net connections are really "iffy" in most of the places we go.

As it should be. That's why they call it "getting away from it all."

HELLO, FROM TUCUMCARI!! :)
My recomendation.. Head North it has to be cooler somewhere.
We will, as soon as the 66 excursion is done for us. That might be real soon; the thermometer was 101 today. It's 90 right now. Looking forward to the flagstaff region.
Lotsa pictures - about 150 so far. So many deserted towns and towns with almost everything shut down and abandoned.
-
:II:
I need a vacation. Take me with you. :(
-
That area of the country is so pretty!
-
I had somehow missed this thread. Hope everything is going well, and yeah, Flagstaff will be noticeably cooler. :cheersmate:
-
Howdy from Grants, NM! :cheersmate:
Hot, hot, hot! But here it went down to 52O last nite. We'll see.......

Took old 66 way over to CA today, where it was 107. Took the Oatman Highway through the mountains, on which vehicles are limited to 40; or less. No problems! The feral burros were out begging food in Oatman, per usual. Turned around just into CA and returned to Seligman, AZ, which we saw earlier in the day. Camped there right now. It was 92 when we checked in, but it'll go down to about 55 tonight. It's in the low 70s now.
Tomorrow will be interesting; the wildfires have caused us to drastically change plans to something else, what else we don't now.

Sounds like you spent about the right amount of time in CA. Hope you didn't spend any money there.

In Torrey, UT, tonight. We may hit I-70 tomorrow (after Capitol Reef) and try the Eisenhower tunnel. Then through Denver and then who knows?
Looking forward to getting home and away from the traveling dogs!!!!
We'll never do this in the summer again.Too frigging hot.

Rt 66 in Oklahoma. This stretch was made with funds that would cover only 1/2 the total distance for two lanes, so they made it one lane of 9' wide concrete (with curbs). It's deteriorating as the years pass.
Still working on the 500 photos we took.....

Marking this thread for later. :-) Where did you start and stop, CG? I'm guessing OK to CA?

Marking this thread for later. :-) Where did you start and stop, CG? I'm guessing OK to CA?
Started near Joliet, IL, covered it for about 90% of its length, went into California to say that we were on 66 there, made a U-turn (it was about 110o there), drifted up into Utah, went to Bryce Canyon, kept traveling generally north to I-70, then through the Eisenhower tunnel, then moteled it at the closest room we could find east of Denver (in Sterling - everything was booked up due to the evacuations from the wildfires [it was over 100o there at 10 PM when we checked in]), then to another motel east of Joplin, then home.
It was really difficult to follow it in many places; no signs, etc. What's really needed is a navigator and a photographer in addition to the person driving. Most of the time my wife was smothered in maps.
The Oatman Highway in Arizona was the most treacherous part; they don't allow anything over 40' long on it (and it used to be part of the "Mother Road"). Then you come over a hill in a corner, and WHAM! there's Oatman (no warning), and the feral donkeys are all over the road!
I need to work on the pics we took and put some of 'em out here.
4380 miles total.
-
Nice. I know from personal experience the road is poorly marked in some places around here.
You came within about one mile of where I live when you went through the Springfield, MO section. There are several changes they made on the path the road took through here.

Don't forget Wally World !

Fascinating video, Jeff! Well done!
h5
Looking forward to more pics. Maybe we'll get to do Route 66 too before it's all gone.
Where's Marty Milner when ya need him? :p

What is that round thing above pricing window for? Did it rotate while gas was being pumped?

If that cross up there is the one in Texas that is a relatively new addition to the state. I saw pictures of it when it was first completed. It looked like it was awesome!

The gallons and the total price rotated. The price per gallon was set by hand by the station.
Notice that the price was 0.344 per gallon.

It used to be the biggest cross in the world. Now there's one in Illinois that tops it by 80'.

My wife was really pissed that she couldn't really get the shot of the sign.

CG, you are too modest by far!!! LOVE the pics. It is so hard to believe that though we are in the same country, how different the culture, and enviroment is...I am so looking forward to one day visiting that part of the country!!

Thanks, Seahorse. I'm afraid of boring everyone here, though. Only a couple of more days, up in Utah though.
Do that in the springtime, when the desert flowers are blooming, or in the fall, when temperatures are moderate.

A big thank you! :yahoo:

it is quite sad to see all the derelict buildings. Thor had put up a Main Street, that he said was like ometown of Dennison....It would be lovely to bring some of those old towns of Pop and mom shops back to life!!!. Have old time country fairs. The thing is we have the land and the people. With enough grit and determination we could do it!!! We did it once!!! This time, we have the technology. That would be a wonderful incentive for homeless veterans. Thor, Sparky and Eupher, Airwolf(in particular) would be just the guys to get something like this into action ...sign me up!!
-
Yeah, I enjoy the pics also, CG. Do not worry about posting them.
The derelict buildings all tell a story, I think, and it's sad to see how they've crumbled. The one-room jail, for example -- kinda wonder what sort of tales that thing could tell. :cheersmate:

I have some pictures of a montage of photos on the inside back wall. Mostly dead guys, all criminals. I haven't studied them yet.

You've posted some roads on there that I want to put the Harley on!! What was that one ... Oatman highway?? Where is that. I would love to ride that road.
KC
-
Is that a museum of some sort??? Do you get a souvenir(memento) from every state. I know I would be...What memories!! jealous!!!
-
The Oatman Highway is in western Arizona, and goes from Seligman, AZ in the east to Kingman in the west. It was a part of the "Mother Road." It's narrow and twisty, with few pull offs to take photos.

That is so beautiful!! It makes my heart happy just looking at it...

Is that a museum of some sort??? Sort of, but it's always open. Hardly anyone lives in that area. Do you get a souvenir(memento) from every state. Nope. Our days of doing that are over. We got a New Mexico Rt 66 sign (hung in our kitchen already), another one that says, "Jeff got his kicks on Rt. 66", that I'll affix to my lawn tractor seat back, and one other that says, "Route US 66", that's not nailed to any wall yet. I know I would be...What memories!! jealous!!!
-
I am terrible when it come s to memntos. My sister calls them tatchkeys(sp??). Many of them were souvenirs when I went traveling with Deano and my mum...now they are that more special to me. To remind me of the good times we had...
-
CG, that out of focus street sign, was that a donkey crossing sign ? If so that could be handy in here as an emoticon.

I forgot. We also got a couple of t-shirts and two coffee mugs. And my wife bought coaster sets for each of our kids. But I think that's about it.

Don't stop on account of us. I wish I had your eye. I usually end up with pics of uncomfortable relatives/friends & my foot.

CG, you got the right idea with the coffee mugs, and T-shirts. You can't say you've "been there done that" unless you have one or the other.
-

Back in the day when I was using 35mm film, there were four weddings we attended for which the bride & groom used my pictures more than they used the photographer's. For pictures of people, I just announce loudly that "I will be a pain in the ass because I'll be circulating and taking pictures." The candids are always the best.
I just ran out of pics, Bad Dog. I still have some that are almost duplicates, that's all. It's too bad we couldn't even get out of the car to enjoy ourselves.
On our trip to Ireland, we took over 1200 pics.
We have my wife's family reunion in Buffalo, NY, on 8/4, but I doubt if any pics of that would interest anyone.
On 9/24-9/16 we have the Coast Guard reunion. Lots of photos result from THAT event, too. Some of those may be worth posting.
-
The digital age makes it so much easier (and cheaper) to take scads of pics.

Just pinging ya CG. I like the same terrain you do. Three years ago we visited one of my RVN crewchiefs in Ruidoso NM. He is a history buff & took us through the whole Billy the Kid story on the ground it happened on. Sadly I got crap for pictures.

Well, it turns out that I am AFU. (Why break with tradition?)
I have two more days of photos - Zion, Capitol Reef, etc.
I'll post 'em when I can.

Open range. The cowboy on horseback and his dog kept them in check. The cowboy just clicked with his mouth and the dog ran over to control the cattle. He just smiled at us and tipped his hat as we passed.

I thought you lived in Illinois? Dontcha need to jump on I-94 to head to Buffalo? Through that sucking chest wound known as Detroit, Windsor, through Canada to Buffalo?
I guess you could take I-90, but hell, that's a freakin' toll road. :argh:
-
When driving to Buffalo, the area around Cleveland is always interesting.
But for the CG reunion in mid-September, we have to go through the mess on the "take a toll on you" road, going up there and coming home. I'll make that trip this Saturday. Going up to Kenosha and back to meet with another reunion committee member (Jon) at the Best Western in Kenosha. The manager is anxiour to have us for a reunion, and the OIC of the CG station there has already agreed to give a good tour to all attendees. We need to select next year's reunion location, and many of us, me included, are weary of going up to northern Wisconsin for the reunion. We figure, "Let them come down to southern Wisconsin for a change." Some of the out-of-staters, like from Massachusetts, Arizona, and Texas, will appreciate the shorter trip. At least 1 other committee member will give us a hard time about this, but we are locked and loaded!
HEY! They appointed Jon and me as co-chairmen of the committee and tasked us with finding a location! Jon (from southern Wisconsin) and I agree that they can ES&D if they don't like it!

I thought you lived in Illinois? Dontcha need to jump on I-94 to head to Buffalo? Through that sucking chest wound known as Detroit, Windsor, through Canada to Buffalo?
I guess you could take I-90, but hell, that's a freakin' toll road. :argh:
Nope. North on Ill-394 to I-90/I-94/I-80, to east I-90/I-94 to I-90 east in Cleveland. Her brother lives south of Buffalo, and I-90 is the shortest and fastest way. I just point the truck and it falls into the ruts left from many years of doing this! (About 8.5 hours, depending on the cops patrolling - but our CB keeps us informed regarding them. Ohio is the worst.)
Don't have to sweat the hellhole you described in eastern Michigan, either, nor the backups going across the border.
We only stop for gas, pee stops, and for a sandwich. (I have the IPass, which is also accepted in Indiana, and New York. No toll on I-90 in Pennsylvania, and no toll east of Cleveland).

Awesome pictures!

Sea, the Grand Canyon is in northern Arizona. CG said these pics were taken in Utah.

Correct, Eupher. W didn't even go near the Grand Canyon, and none of the pics were even a small part of that.
But 2 years ago we camped at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. I could post some of those pics on a new thread of anyone wishes.

I lived in the Salt Lake valley for more than 4 years, from 2000 to 2004, and as my sister lives in the Phoenix area, we'd occasionally make the 9-hour drive down from SLC through Kanab, over to Page, AZ; down through Flagstaff and into Phoenix.
The area between Kanab and Page is so remote that it's been said that the area was used as backdrop and sets for many a western film. No telephone poles, no aircraft contrails, no oil derricks, nothing that would get in the way.
It's a long drive, but it's rich in geology and it's beautiful in many ways. I really love the Flagstaff area - due to its elevation, it doesn't get nearly as hot as Phoenix does, but they do get their share of snow in the winter.

It was over 100o in Flagstaff when we stayed there during the trip, and it didn't cool off that much at night. That is not normal, and in general, we agree with you about Flagstaff, and we'd like to move to that area.
We passed through the area you described on our way to the North Rim. Beautifully desolate.

Seahorse, I really do hope you get to see the Grand Canyon some day. They say your breath is taken away at the enormity and gigantic beauty of it all.
My little travel plans are so puny compared to others on the thread. But I'm excited as we hardly ever get to get away. Doing a little camping on the mighty St. Larry in early August! :cheersmate:

It's beyond description. NO photograph or video can ever take the place of standing on the edge of the canyon and viewing and experiencing the entirety of the canyon. Although you'll be awed by the view, you have to remember that you are looking at it in only one place. There are additional vistas, some of which are on Indian land.

Yup. That's definitely one of the "gotta-sees" of our country.
Most people go to the South Rim, probably because it has slightly easier access. But the North Rim is equally as impressive and it isn't as crowded.
Even still, accessing both main areas takes some driving.
-
The North Rim is also much cooler and less congested. I think it's altitude is about 8000'.
