After nearly two weeks of deliberations, the jury in the John Edwards corruption trial has reached a verdict. The court clerk at the federal courthouse in Greensboro, N.C., said it will be read at approximately 2:30 p.m. ET.
Edwards is charged with six criminal counts—conspiracy, four counts of receiving illegal campaign contributions and one count of making false statements—for allegedly soliciting and secretly spending over $925,000 to cover up his affair with Rielle Hunter, a campaign videographer, during the 2008 presidential election. If he had been convicted on all six counts, Edwards faced up to 30 years in prison and $1.5 million in fines.

Pretty sure it's after 2:30 ET, but still no word other than there is a verdict.

I'd love to see that guy wearing stripes.

Half an hour to go.

They've reached a verdict on one count only (of six criminal counts), so the judge tells the jury to continue deliberations.
Just a guess, but I'd bet that they got him on making a false statement. That's pretty much a given, I'd think.

It's 2 here in Tejas, so wouldn't that make it 3 on the Least Coast?
Guess they want to build the suspense.

Yup, just after 3pm here in the Least . . . :-)

CNN is live blogging it. They've only got a verdict on one count. Defense wants a mistrial, prosecution wants them to keep deliberating.

[Updated at 2:55 p.m. ET] The prosecution has asked for the jury to go back in the jury room to deliberate. The defense has asked for a mistrial on the remaining counts.
The judge is taking a five minute recess on the matter. The judge has the option to issue an "Allen charge," which is essentially a request from the court for the jury to go back into deliberations and try again to reach a unanimous verdict on the additional five counts.
[Posted at 2:53 p.m. ET] The jury in the John Edwards trial has only reached a unanimous decision on one charge against John Edwards.
The group of jurors said that as of this moment they could only agree on the charge of illegal campaign contributions from Rachel "Bunny" Mellon. We do not know which way the jury decided on that count.

False alarm.
[Updated at 3:08 p.m. ET] The judge in former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards' federal corruption trial has ordered jurors to continue deliberations after they announced they had reached a verdict on only one of six counts.
The judge has issued an "Allen charge," which is essentially a request from the court for the jury to go back into deliberations and try again to reach a unanimous verdict on all counts.

A North Carolina jury found John Edwards not guilty on one of six counts in a campaign-finance trial, and declared itself hopelessly deadlocked on the remaining charges, leading the judge to declare a mistrial on those counts.

Un-****ing-believable....
-
I was hoping that he would be found guilty on all counts, but the more I read and heard about the charges and the evidence, I didn't think it would happen.
-
Since it was a mistrial on the other 5 counts, that means the prosecution can go after him again on those counts right?
I bet they don't though.

I think they could, but I'd put money they don't. Looks like Silky Pony dodged it this time. At least this means the DUmmies have a Presidential candidate in 2016.

It's the hair. It does it every time.

It has to be something. I am just wondering if we will see Edwards on Dancing with the stars?

We may not see him in jail, but we damned sure ain't gonna see him on the national political stage. The ****stick is DONE.

Yeah, that is a given. He is just another liberal who got caught, and then set free because he wasn't a Republican. I can guarantee that if he was a Republican, the jury would have deliberated for five minutes and came back with a guilty verdict on all counts. Hell, they probably wouldn't have left the court room. The lead juror would have just stood up and announced that they reached a verdict.

Perhaps not a National political stage but I got this horrid thought, he reminds me of the Preachers that have gone astray and spoke much like he is almost word for word. Will he become the next big expert on sin to get a Megga ministery on TV ???
I have sinned, all my fault, I love my family and am sure God has great plans for me. Since Jesus has forgiven my sins, if you love Jesus you will too. Hallelujah and pass the collection plate.

Vice President Cheney's top aide, Libby was found guilty of lying about his role in the leak of Plame's identity, two counts of perjury, one count of making false statements and one count of obstruction of justice on March 6, 2007. He was acquitted of a single count of lying to the FBI. On July 2, President Bush commuted Libby's sentence

Valerie and her husband were on the cover of Vanity fair. They outed themselves. They are the ones who should be in prison. If you were an undercover agent, why would you risk your status by having the gargantuan ego to get on the cover of a major magazine ? It showed about as much judgement lapse as the secret service not paying off hookers.

Updated: Justice Dept. dropping charges against Silky Pony.
http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/no-retrial-john-edwards-justice-department-says-202418229.html
The Justice Department announced Wednesday it will give up its criminal case against former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards.
In May, a deadlocked North Carolina federal jury found Edwards not guilty of one charge of accepting illegal campaign donations. The group couldn't reach a decision on five other felony charges, including one alleging that Edwards knowingly used $1 million in secret campaign donations from wealthy donors to support his mistress. Edwards could have faced 30 years in prison if convicted.
Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer said in a statement that the Justice Department put forward its best case. "The jurors could not reach a unanimous verdict on five of the six counts of the indictment, however, and we respect their judgment. In the interest of justice, we have decided not to retry Mr. Edwards on those counts."

FML.
May this sorry bastard rot in hell for all eternity for the pain he's caused. Ambulance-chasin', mouth-breathing, dick-chasing, piece of shit-stained biological accident. :argh:

The DOJ is stopping the pursuit because he is a liberal. Bull Shit.

Do you have in mind pain suffered by people who donate a lot of money to Democratic Party candidates?

Do you have in mind the pain suffered by the folkes in Edwards inner circle?
Do you think that Edwards is worthy of being defended?
I hope so, I'd like to see how you would defend this lizard.
-
Do you think that Edwards is worthy of being defended?
No, I was simply curious about what you actually feel. The sooner you identify wrongdoing by a Dem, and the wider you spread your message, the more help you are to Dems.
-
Let me turn this around on you...
What do you think?
Are you OK with Edwards?
You seem to be so smart but you got nothing to say.
Where are you at, you are the DUmbass that asked the question.
-

Edwards is a phony. I think that some right-wing televangelists have been phony in a very similar way. So whatever is learned from studying Edwards might, in the long run, help the right.
If you don't want to think about the long run, that's okay. Focus on Edwards. He's a Dem and he's a phony. Identify other such Dem phonies. That would be a public service, and also a service to the Democratic Party. In the short term, it might be bad for Democratic PR, but in the long run it's good for the Democratic Party.
-
Look DUmbass, I didn't focus on Edwards ...
Just out of curiosity, how many right wing televangelists do you think we have running for president?
Can you name even one?
-
Do you have in mind pain suffered by people who donate a lot of money to Democratic Party candidates?
Didn't even cross my mind. The only thing that did was how the ****stick gamed the system and managed to beat it. But that's what ambulance chasers do.

I'm not so sure that the prosecution team didn't have members who were sympathetic to Edwards, and purposely mounted an incompetent prosecution.

Which "right-wing televangelists" might you be speaking of, dear boy? Falwell's dead. Most of the others were apolitical, aside from Fred Phelps and his little clan of shit-filled meatsacks, and they're DEMOCRATS.
Edwards is worse than a phony--he's evil. Yeah, evil. He created a child out of wedlock with a skank while his wife was with terminal cancer, and paid out of donated funds to keep it quiet (sounds awfully familiar too, who was that guy...oh yeah--Jesse Jackson!) His at best frivolous lawsuits where he "channels" kids served no purpose other than to enrich himself. It created a void in the medical community where doctors were driven from their practices in droves because they simply couldn't afford the skyrocketing insurance rates, thanks to Edwards and others of his ilk. Hint: Think of the, "Have you taken XXXXX?" SUE SOMEONE!" commercials inundating our airwaves.
