Hawk attacking my cat... what should I do?
A large grey hawk has been hanging out in our backyard for the past 2 weeks. Twice in the last 3 days he has swooped down and came within inches of grabbing my cat. The cat ran, and I threw stuff at the hawk, and he just goes back up to the telephone pole. I throw rocks at him and he flies away, but the next day he is back again. Any suggestions?

43. harming a hawk is a felony, stop throwing stones
keep the cat indoors or feed the cat to the hawk, i really don't care which, but it is a felony to interfere with a North American raptor (bird of prey) without a license
cats are not endangered, they are an overpopulation, it is the right of the hawk to defend its territory and to feed
it is an honor to have your cat eaten by a hawk
people who care about their cats keep them indoors, no excuses, there is no natural habitat for the housecat in north america

46. No, it is defintely not an honor to have my cat eaten by a hawk. Sorry.
Moreover, if any animal of any species attacked me with deadly force, I would kill it without hesitation, in self defense. Even if it was the last surviving specimen of that species. My life is not worth sacrificing for the sake of the survival of another species. Sorry. I have rights too, and my cat has the right to live a life undisturbed by predators.

49. Since when is one's survival a matter of "convenience?" If my life was in immediate peril
from an animal attack, I would kill that animal without hesitation or any guilt. The law doesn't matter in that situation. The endangered status of the animal doesn't matter in that situation. All that matters is my survival. The animal is dead. Period. Not a second thought.

51. I agree about you, not about the cat.
Personally, if I saw you kill a hawk to defend you're cat, I'd call every agency I could to push for your prosecution. Cats are an invasive species and have no place in the natural environment of North America. They're just as destructive to nature as suburban sprawl and pollution, and are far more devastating than all of Americas hunters combined.
You have a right to a cat, and your cat has a right to live, but it MUST live in harmony with the natural environment that already exists. Neither you nor your cat has a right to change the environment or to kill or chase off native fauna. If your cat cannot live outside with the hawk, you should keep it inside.
That said, it's not likely that the hawk could get your cat. They do catch them on rare occasion, but cats are excellent at evasion. Dogs tend to be more frequent targets because they aren't built to evade the same way cats are.
As others have mentioned, you can also try some bird netting. It's effective, and you can net a typical yard for about $50. Put the number for the local SPCA on your speedial however, because you're going to be calling them to have injured birds untangled with some regularity.

60. Go ahead and call. If a bird attacks and harms my cat, the bird is taking a bullet. Period.
I don't care whether it's an endangered species or not. It's self-defense. Anyone or anything that attacks me or one of my dependents is dead. Period.

this time of year.

Then we subsidize laziness and punish success.
BTW, don't worry, pitohui, if a Hawk swoops in on my animals, I won't be throwing rocks. I'm throwing triple aught.

Someone ought to give that hawk a bag of skittles and an Iced Tea... :fuelfire:

I hope not. There are what, maybe 9 pellets of 000 in a round?
Unless you're really up close and personal, he can slip right through your pattern.
For hawks, you want to use #6 shot. That's all I ever use for turkeys.
And with a full-choke barrel, at 40 yards a robin won't get through the pattern.

Animals that are cared for are considered Property in most states. You get a hawk catching your free rage chickens that you feed and depend on for food and eggs, no question asked the Hawk has to GO.
Cats are also property if fed and given Vet care, so are small 6 pound dogs, they depend on you to keep them as safe as you can.
In some States it is illegal to shoot a Bear, catch one of them going after a calf or Foll and they be gone also.
Darn, were this Hawk to get a shining to your brand new car and decide to eat the paint or peck holes in it, perhaps get aggressive with the kids playing out side----Hawk be gone.
This is so stupid, Humans rights come before the rights of aggressive animals, and when a wild bird or animal acts out they may be sick with any number of diseases that can effect your family. One has the right to protect their Property, from all threats.

I've heard it mentioned that #1 Buck is best for defense. Especially the new Federal LE132 load (12 gauge). It just came out, and it sold out virtually everywhere that had it--within hours.
As for hawks? If one comes after my cat, I've screwed up by letting Oreo out. Oreo's pretty heavy now, so that hawk had better have the lifting power of an AV-8B Harrier. It's still going to get shot.

Don't the DUmpmonkeys claim that they are a majority? Wouldn't that be considered an overpopulation? Can we just feed DUmpmonkeys to hawks instead of cats?

I have a barn full of mice. My kitties keep them from overpopulating my property. Wouldn't bother me much if a hawk came after them as I'm pretty sure the hawk would be damned sorry they got a hold of one of them.
These cats are bad ass, and birds are a favorite prey. I discourage them however with my BB gun! They still grab one once in a while, but, that's how nature works. I'm thinkin' the tom might actually bait a Red Tail, and the eagles won't bother. Too much work for some pretty tuff meat! They're all around 10 years old.

Well since this jerk would work to get me prosecuted for protecting my pets I would double down and send this DUmmy to the hospital with the ass kicking of his life. If I'm going to jail for stupid liberal policy then I might as well beat the living shit out of a stupid liberal trying to get me busted via stupid liberal policy.

Vesta, I agree with you.
My wife puts it in a different way: "What's mine is mine, and if something is messing with mine, they will get theirs! Law or no law!"
We "dispatch" groundhogs with regularity around here, and I used my 9mm to off a raccoon last week. I know enough about 'coons to know if you see one wandering in your field at 3 PM, it's either sick or injured. I didn't bother to ask him which it was.

:cheersmate: :cheersmate:---------Yup, and also this reminds me of a Dick VAN Dike episode from the past.
Richie, his 8 year old son was being attacked by a cat bird I believe every time he left the house.
Across the river in Maine there is Turkey Trouble, Toms I believe that refuse to let people out of their house and even trapped a cop in his cruiser. Residence can't just shoot the sucker due to fire arm ordnance etc.
Geese, ganders are better watch dogs then real dogs and as scary as a charging pit bull. Had a time or two as a kid being attacked and they are faster then my little legs were.
Those Canadian geese are nasty buggers, they come in big group's and can destroy your yard in just a few days, I gave Mom a small air horn to toot at them, seemed to work very well.
Air horns work great on other varmints also, they run off skunks, possems, raccoons, fox and deer in the garden. I refuse to kill anything I do not intend to eat or skin, the air horn is a good way to get rid of unwanted critters bloodlessly.
I would take the fall for violating a noise ordinance before I would face a felony fire arms charge.

Correct. They can have and do carry feline and K-9 distemper and rabies.
They can have, carry, spread and pass on to their young rabies for up to 7 months after contracting it before dying from it.

About 18 years ago, we had an outbreak of raccoon rabies in upstate NY. The damned things were showing up all over the place, and not in a good way. An acquaintance of mine who was (maybe he still is) a cop in a city north of where I am now (Saratoga Springs), had to shoot one with his duty handgun--a S&W .45 ACP loaded with Federal 230-grain Hydra-Shoks. He said that they tear the things apart. One shot. :hammer:

The hawk is protecting her nest. We have hawks everywhere, and a resident pair of caracaras with 3 babies this year. They hang around the horses and catch the little critters that run away from 'em. They've don't pay any attention to my Maltese, but the dogs don't go near their nesting area either.

This has nothing to do with good versus evil. This has to do with protecting a beloved part of your family. Unfortunately the animal(villian, if you will) is this case, happens to be an endangered species. I am a big advocate for animals, especially endangered ones, but my cat means a lot to me and the hawk is going down. However, I do take responsibility in making sure , she stays an indoor cat, so she nor another animal will get hurt....

For some reason this reminded me of another classic thread at the DUmp where the DUmmy was upset that her cat killed some critter and she wanted to teach the cat right from wrong. :rotf:

Unfortunately the animal(villian, if you will) is this case, happens to be an endangered species.
Hawks and owls, for political reasons, I guess, are protected species just like songbirds, they are not endangered.
There are a few species that are classified as "endangered", but they are pretty rare and very unlikely to be involved in eating your cat.
The predatory hawks and owls that cause problems with domestic animals and fowl are no more endangered than robins.

Pretty sure I was probably born in this country before any Hawk living today, so, can I kill and provide food for my family if it enters my territory? He wasn't even alive when all those evil white men stole the land from the peaceful, Cum Bay Ya-singing natives.

We need a lets ask Frank forum here. A sort of Dear Abby thing.
Dear Frank,
I wonder how you would handle this problem, sitting on your porch watching your Kitty's at play laughing at their antics, out of the blue from the sky sudden death to one of them.
Damn this hawk is so fast it's grabs the cat and flys off before you can get out of your chair. Damn nation, next day you notice the hawk hanging out keeping an eye out for its next meal.
Choices you have are:
Go to town and buy a shot gun, visit local sheriff and get instructions and some practice in on how to use if safely, come home and blow the sucker away before it gets another meal.
Try to get wild life photos of the bird as it carries off another pet. Place warning posters about the area of the hawk as a killer, Farmers LOCK up the barn cats.
Attempt to gather up the remaining cats and lock them in the house much to their distress.
Join the Audubon Society and become an avid bird watcher.
Thank you Dear Frank, from a worried old lady with an Owl in the trees eating up my chipmonks that I feed.

On our dairy farm, we had several cats. One in particular was a solid black tom named "Roscoe". Roscoe was BAD ASS! He even kept the DOGS in line.
After we finished milking the cows, we would pour the unfiltered milk left in the pipeline (about a gallon) out for the dogs and cats to drink. One day, one of our border collie pups (about 12 weeks old) joined in the feeding, and ran all the cats off so he could have the milk to himself. Roscoe smacked the dog in the head so hard, I heard the 'thud', he cut the end of the dog's nose open, then sat down on the porch near the dish and let the other cats return. Roscoe didn't even lay his ears back, just walked up to the dog and "SMACK".
He never bothered any of the dogs that drank with the cats, so long as they weren't growling and snapping at them, like this pup did.
From that day on, whenever the pup approached the bowl, all Roscoe had to do was get up and stretch, the pup would leave! :lmao:
