Well, it was a great place to be a security officer, say in the NKVD or the MVD.  Other than that it pretty much blew.

I don't think the DUmbass slept through it, more than likely was stoned or ****ed-up on something else.

However Taverner isn't a complete failure, he can always serve as an example of what not to do.

having actually been to the good old USSR in 1985 and 1988, I can tell you that tere was nothing good for the common man there. If you were in the government, life was much better. Government workers were on par with a very low income family in the West. The member in good standing with the party were doing quite well and had access to hard currency and what that bought from the West. In general, the people of the USSR were lucky to have a subsistence diet. Only the government workers were fat. There were huge stores with nothing but empty shelves and long lines in the morning in the cities I was at.

We installed a machines in factories and two things come to mind beside the huge stores with nothing in them. One was that it was sweltering in this one factory. The Russian workers handed me a roughly gallon size jug of clear substance that I assumed was water. I took a big swig and it turned out to be really bad vodka. The other was that the night before we were to leave all our tools left the site. The rep said that was just par for the course in the USSR. It was a glorious country under what little Barry wants to do to the USA.

109. Tell that to the Native Americans & the slaves.

And how many once-thriving lakes & rivers in the US are now devoid of fish? The Great Lakes fishing fleets are long gone, never to return. I also remember when the pollution in the Cuyahoga River catching fire was nearly an annual event.

The USSR was never as evil, and America was never as great as the dreamy-eyed American propaganda painted them.

How about the modern welfare state and Social-Democracies? Do people think those massive reforms were granted out of the goodness of the capitalists's non-existent hearts? No,they were granted out of fear. The USSR showed that a (very flawed) alternative to private capitalism could exist and that scared the capitalists here and in Europe into giving major reforms. Reforms that they are now trying to give back. Oh,and if it wasn't for the USSR WWII could have gone very differently.

As to the point about famines, you can't blame that on Soviet policy simply because Russia has problems with famines under the Tsars.
:bird: :bird:   I hope one day you're hungry enough to become insane, and murder your children in order to eat them.  Ukraine.  Hope it happens to you.

24. Greater equality of the sexes.

No sexual exploitation of women for commerce, as opposed to the industrial scale degradation going on there now.

You're not really going to suggest that prostitution wasn't rampant.  When people are hungry, they will do almost anything.  Including selling anything they have.

Lydia Leftcoast bears that out:

Quote
(oh yes, the poverty led to an explosion of drug trafficking and prostitution, which combined to give the former Soviet Union a horrible rate of AIDS infection)

Here's a little exchange:

55. The Holocaust was deliberate murder.

A lot of the deaths cited for the USSR are inflated by adding numbers caused by famine or WWII. For the record I don't support the USSR under any of its various leaders, but there is so much misinformation about it.

I remember the Cuyahoga River catching fire back in the 70s, and it's  still used as an example of pollution that has been eliminated by government regulations.

But it was caused by gasoline spilled into a storm sewer. Storm sewers do not route water through any treatment, so a similar fire could just as easily happen today.

And the best freshwater fishing I've had in my life was in Lake Erie during the years when Time magazine declared it a "dead lake".

Romanian orphans
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanian_orphans

The standard of living for Romanian orphans is still grave despite vast improvements since their conditions were leaked to the West after the fall of the Communist government in 1989. A news report on the American newsmagazine 20/20, which first aired on October 5, 1990, was the first to show the conditions in full detail on television.

Under Nicolae CeauÅŸescu, both abortion and contraception were forbidden, leading to a rise in birth rates. This resulted in many children being abandoned and these were joined in the orphanages by disabled and mentally ill people. Together these vulnerable groups were subjected to institutionalised neglect and abuse, including physical and sexual abuse and use of drugs to control behaviour.

Don't these fools ever learn?

The Nazis actually did a lot better job of killing Russians than vise-versa, there were just about ten times more Russians than Nazis.  They did manage a better return on effort against Chechen muzzies, not so well against the Afghans but then again we were helping the Afghans by feeding them Stingers to suppress the Soviet air support.

That's also very true, and just about the only point one can find in favor of the Nazis.

The enormous, horrendously bloody battles of the Barbarossa campaign, in retrospect, were win-win for the civilized world.
