I always hated the show because it was formulaic to the point of qualifying as a substitute for the Chinese water torture and I'm no friend of the CSA from the American Civil War but the mania of these "people" is reaching absurd levels:

Does the show Dukes of Hazzard encourage racism?
(Please note I am sorry if this question is in the wrong forum. I just wasn't sure if I should put it here on in the lounge?)
When I was younger I did watch Dukes. I know that it was geared towards kids during the middle of the 1st season.
Now that I'm older and more politically aware am I being bias against the show?
My husband started to collect the show on DVD. his little cousin when they come over our interested in watching the show. I am concerned only because their parents are well Fundie/conservative/well racist people at times. I think they only tolerate me being around their kids because I am a great last minute babysitter and the girls do enjoy being around me.
So am I being rude here and judging a show from 30 years ago on today's standards? Or should I just relax and let the kids enjoy a show that is probably less violent than most of the cartoons shown today?

1. They have the racist, 'slave owners' flag on their car
and named it the General Lee...what do you think?
fishwax
2. Do you mean because of the rebel flag on the "general lee"? Or are there other aspects you question?
Justice wanted
6. all of it.
Yeah!
Daisy Duke was an effort to seduce black men into desiring white women so as to dilute their blood lines and inflame white male hatred.

28. I don't think it encourages racism so much as promotes a myth of a racism free confederate heritage
(note I said confederate heritage, not southern heritage--this isn't intended as a south bashing post.)
I haven't seen the show in years, and by and large I don't remember there being a lot of minority characters in the show. However, I do have a (vague, but I think genuine--as I've said, it's been a while since I've seen it) memory of the Duke family being critical of racist attitudes in an episode. I don't recall the Dukes themselves engaging in racist behaviors or language, though it's possible that they did.
But the use of confederate symbols such as that racist flag does seem to advance of a myth of a confederate heritage that is independent of that racial baggage, which is itself inaccurate and unfortunate.
I always thought is was because the Confederate flag was a cool looking design on a show about vapid sensationalism.
Shows how much I know.

5. It made being a redneck acceptable
Just about the time Reagan needed the racist redneck vote, 'Dukes of Hazzard' made stupid and backwards acceptable. You do know that Jimmy Carter was slowly bringing the South into the 20th century, until Reagan's pandering to the racists gave them another way out. Here we are 32 years later, and almost every problem in the country can be laid at the feet of pandering to the stupid and backwards.

20. It did make rednecks seem cool.
I'm not so sure they were stupid, they just didn't have much 'book lernin'. You're right it the show is kind of symbolic of the beginning of the era of anti-intellectualism.

47. Is it 'not acceptable' to be rural, backwards, and/or less intelligent than the mean?
Because that describes a whole lot of people. Would you say that to people in rural Appalachia who vote Dem? How about rural blacks in the South?
And there are a lot of problems that have nothing to do with pandering to the 'stupid and backwards.' Such, oh I don't know, the lack of regulation and enforcement on Wall St. That's about as far from 'stupid and backwards' as you can get.
For the record, I remember almost nothing about the show itself. But I do remember loving the car as a young child and having the toy.
Brickbat
8. How could it? There weren't any black people on it!
Rex
11. Sure there was! Don't you remember ___________
he was a main character for 4 seasons!
Also racist: The Iliad, The Odyessy, Canterbury Tales, Beowulf, all Shakespeare except Othello...
And on it goes...

What do DUmmies have against Sherriff Little of Chickashaw County?
-
I liked the DoH while growing up for 3 reasons.
1. Car chases.
2. Dynamite on arrows.
3. Daisy.
I would bet that at least 2 of those are on most people's top 3 reasons they watched as well.
-
I watched. I was a kid. Stuff blew up. Cars jumped all kinds of stuff. Daisy helped make my voice change.
Correct me if I'm wrong here, but the Dukes of Hazzard were popular during the CARTER era, not Reagan. I remember one episode specifically where President Carter calls Uncle Jesse because of his moonshine-to-gasoline ideas.

It was either that or "Scarecrow and Mrs. King".
Not much on TV on Tuesday night.

Irony Alert! A bunch of elitists discussing racial bias while demonstrating extreme class bias.

It was a friggen cit-com. Geez

Close enough.
The Dukes of Hazzard is an American television series that aired on the CBS television network from 1979 to 1985.
-
as much as the duke boys dis-obeyed the law's orders, you'd think the DUmmys would empathize instead of ostracize.
-
The sky is blue today.

I'll take them seriously when they want to talk about all the afrocentric shows of the late 80's and 90's that had very few white characters and when they did they were mostly portrayed as morons. The Dukes of Hazzard of all things. In my recollect, you think they'd like how those boys ran circles around that 1%er Boss Hog and his 'army' of cops under 'Cooter'. You think DUmmies would like the theme of regularly pulling one over on the cops and the rich man, but shrug.

Barely...it debuted in Jan of 1979

I think Cooter was the mechanic. Roscoe P. Coltrain was his deputy.

That's right. Hogg was mayor or something.

Crap...you are right :thatsright: I shall sulk off in embarrassment now. I used to watch that show too. :-)
-
BTW, I didn't mean "his deputy" as in Cooter's deputy. Cooter, IIRC, was always working with the Duke boys.

Wonder if they realize how often they talk about race. They're focused on it "like a laser". Only racists see everything in terms of black and white. And these people look for reasons to voice their sympathy...of course those who protest the loudest and all that.

Contract dispute.
Wopat and Schneider wanted to work on their "singing" careers. Wopat got married... nobody's heard from him since.

Ye'old stars and bars never bothered me, that is their heritage for the love of heavens. When will the liberal North head south to desecrate the cemetery's with the CSA symbol on the graves of those that died in the war???
Next we know the Saint Patricks Day Parade will be picketed by the Orange Irishmen descendants. I will pay good money to watch that rumble.
What's a the matter with you people that want us to forget history or deny anyone their right to be proud of their ancestors from 150 years ago ???
Stand back and watch what happens if we tell the Italians they cannot place the flag of Italy on their cars because the Italians tried to beat us all up in WW2.
I have allot of French in me and Brit, some sniveling Liberal tell me they are offended by the Flags as a bumper sticker as we fought the French Indian wars or the Revolution, I just may have to learn real fast how to pee standing up and wet down their shoes. Clean up on Isle 4 .
I must admit I did buy a tee shirt with Shermans Whore on it while in Georgia but never wore it, not that I was afraid to but with public education as it is, few kids or adults have any idea who the General was.
Comes down to heritage, we need to respect others and if others are offended, that is their problem. BTW, the OWS thinks nothing of burning Old Glory, the very symbol of their, in their time freedom. These Liberals are NUTS.

Late 80's and 90's? Go back and watch some reruns of Sanford and Son, The Jeffersons, and Good Times.
The overtly racist tones of those shows will make you swaller yer snuff.

Archie Bunker, can one get get anywhere near him for making us laugh at our selves ? The show opened our eyes on what we feared the most, our own selves and the ideas we were brought up on.
Spin off the Jefferson's, neighbors were interracial couple with a child Jefferson called a Zebra, interesting.

Coy and Vance were brought in because the actors that played Bo and Luke quit over rights to the Merchandising that the studio was involved in. Apparently they either didn't get a fair share or anything at all at first.

i almost forgot
the balladeer: Waylon Jennings narrates the show and sings teh them song, his most famous (but not necessarily his best) song
-
Cooter went on to be a Democrat Congressman for a time.

Cooter went on to be a Democrat Congressman for a time.
Now he runs a museum/restaurant/whatever in Nashville.
I drive by it a few times a week. I need to take some pictures before it gets too cold outside.
-
I used to watch the show a good deal a few years ago, but not so much now that it's only on in late- night syndication.
Racist implications? Not really.
The rebel flag on the roof of the General Lee was more a symbol of Southern identity than a sign that they wanted to reinstate slavery.
While there were no major black characters on the show (Other than the semi- recurring guest character Sheriff Little, who was shown to be an ok guy in spite of his dislike of the Dukes), minor ones popped up from time to time in episodes, and were usually portrayed as good people.
-
I will take the Dukes anyday over what the DUmmies watch, like 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, Daily Show, Colbert Report, etc...
Suck it lurking DUmmies.

Archie Bunker, can one get get anywhere near him for making us laugh at our selves ? The show opened our eyes on what we feared the most, our own selves and the ideas we were brought up on.
No it wasn't, it was liberal stereotyping writ large. The "heroes" and "sane" characters on that show were a freeloading, self-righteous, whiny-assed libtard "man" (meathead) and Archie's beautiful but easily swayed daughter who were constantly fighting the good fight against the old, white bigot. The funny part is, "Archie" (for the most part) had the queers and libs pretty much nailed.
Incidentally, the only one of them that actually had a job was the old white guy. You want something "interesting", vesta? Chew on that little factoid for a while.
Historically speaking, that show truly turned out to be art imitating life.
-
I watched a lot of Sanford and Son when it came on TVLand. There is no way in heck Redd Foxx would get away with saying the things he said today. He was harsh on Puerto Ricans. I also got my first taste of All in the Family from TVLand. That show was hilarious; but they did make the 'bigot' on the show the 'dumb guy'. He rarely got words right; but he did have Dems nailed :)
I grew up watching the Dukes of Hazard, and I loved it (mainly because it was "based" in GA, where I live). I also knew several people like Cooter, Bo, and Luke. I watch the reruns now and realize how stupid (and predictable) it really is. A lot of my childhood favorites disappoint when I re-watch them now :(

I stand corrected remembering some of the very things you mention.
