So I have started a Journal here at DU about this trip. And thia is the first entry!
As many that have read some of my posts already know, I have lost my Home due to the May 22, 2011 Tornado that hit Joplin, MO. I can not get any help due to (according to FEMA and other agencies) being a renter that was just moving in. Due to this I also could not get my rent money back that my husband and I paid up for an extra month.
We also have no jobs due to the tornado and for some reason the majority of the clean up jobs are going to outsiders.
So we have sold what we had in storage(we were not all the way moved in yet). We placed packs on our backs and we are taking off. We hope to get up to the Northwest by the end of September. So Stay Tuned!

Lady Freedom Returns (40 posts) Tue Aug-30-11 09:53 PMThe Hiking DUmmie either cannot spell, or managed to get onto a circle or go-kart track, and has been making endless laps all the day long.

1. where abouts are you?
Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute.
The primitive expected to walk from Joplin, Missouri, to Pittsburg, Kansas on the first day?
No way; that's practically supersonic speed for human legs and feet. No way.

6. right now just to walk over the Missouri- Kansas line.
we should be on the west side of Pittsburgh KS by tomorrow night.
25 miles in one day. Assuming they go in a straight line from Joplin to the SE corner of Washington, they won't get there before the beginning of November at the earliest. And there's no way they're going in a straight line. Add in delays for injuries and zero days to rest and refit, and they'll make it around December. And that's just to that corner. Add another month or so to make it to Seattle (assuming they never hitch) and I'd say we can start writing obituaries now for these DUmmies.
I still don't understand why the primitives aren't going in a straighter line from Joplin to Seattle, which would of course put them hiking through the Sandhills of Nebraska.
This Missouri-Kansas-Colorado trek is surely going to cost them some days, some miles, some energy, they don't have to expend.
Would you let them sleep in the house if they stopped by, or would they have to pitch their tent on the William Rivers Pitt?

I wonder if the DUmmie used the walking option on Google maps to plan their trip?
Google show that walking from Joplin to Seattle can be done in just 27 days! Unfortunately assuming that a typical walking pace is 3 MPH so 1,982 miles @ 3 MPH comes to 660 hours. 24 Hrs/Day, that comes to 27 days.
On yea there's that little sleep, eat, rest thing and good luck trying to keep 3 MPH up those mountain ranges. I suspect their bodies should be found sometime after the spring thaw.
It's late in the year and all that, but does anyone suppose this primitive could end up in the running for one of the top DUmmies of 2011?
That is, if she doesn't end up a coyote-dined-upon carcass in the wilds of Colorado or Wyoming.
Do we have a DUmmie Darwin award?

I am having a hard time believing that they were denied any help or shelter after having their home destroyed. Something doesn't add up. And why the hell didn't they buy bus tickets? I sense some really bad problem solving skills here.
Wasn't there another DUmmie who was taking on an epic trip? Ichingcarpenter comes to mind for some reason .... have they ever been heard from again?

Dingoes. Dingoes at an exotic animal ranch in Nebraska.
:cheersmate:
Cop: "Wot d'yer mean, dingoes?"
Traveling companion: "Dingoes! Dingoes ate my hippie!"
Cop: "Right then, 'and behind yer back, yer comin' with me!"

Oh lawd! This gonna be a daily thing?!
Should we start a pool on the number of days before this would excursion goes of the rails one day or another?
Since The Hiking DUmmie is going through areas that are semi-populated, free wi-fi is still available. I suspect that further out, we won't see any updates for quite some time. That is, if the coyotes don't finish them both off first.

They will get turned around someplace and face having to cross the Rockies in Oct. I hope they brought some warm clothes.
That was a stupid route to plan on anyway.
It would be like me hiking to St. Louis via Dallas.
And I remain greatly mystified as to why they were compelled to leave Joplin in the first place.
They were already there, their stuff was there, and despite the discombobulation caused by the tornado, it's proving only a temporary discombobulation, not a permanent one.
Life in Seattle can't possibly promise any more than life in Joplin.
Maybe they want free pie.
You have a point, sir.
Except, remember--the grasswire primitive promises free pie only to affluent governmental employees.
The ordinary working people and poor people have to pay full price.

I would wire them the money for bus tickets, but I got a feeling the resolute martyr complex has set in. The blame never befalls personal behavior or doings, but to the monsters created in the head by mental disorder - perhaps caused from the mindless reverberations formulated by the proverbial internet echo chamber. All they have to do is ask however, and I would be more than glad to purchase bus tickets to the destination at whatever city they end up in for a bit.

Oh now, sir, don't even think about it.
If one has surplus money, and a primitive's in trouble or distress, best to donate the money to a local charity or a worthy individual one knows.....in the name of the primitive.
But I wouldn't send a cent to a primitive.
It is a futile attempt at compassion, as we all know conservatives are the most compassionate people because we actually do compassionate things wherein liberals expect everyone else to, by force in most cases. Jumping frogs and pseudo pixel hugs are not compassion. Nevertheless, it's a futile attempt because of the martyr complex and the likelihood that any offer would be ignored. Honestly, I don't much believe the story. It's pixel sympathy for political measure, a bouncy of sorts methinks. I could be wrong, but at this point I don't think I am.
I'm waiting for Beth to start using her skills in fund-raising to help them.
You know they didn't. What? It gets COLD in the mountains? Even in SUMMER?
These people are DUmp democrats. I'm still betting they didn't realize there are mountains between Missouri and Washington.

Greyhound bus fare out of Joplin to Seattle runs at a little over $200 for TWO people. The Hiking DUmmie mentioned picking a Dell Inspiron laptop for $100. With the $200 they have to their name, plus hocking the laptop for $20-$30 at a pawn shop, they'd have enough money to cover two tickets on Greyhound.
Yeah but they would arrive flat broke. This way they can save money, spend 30+ days on the road without a bath and arrive flat broke.
Soon to be seen on a street corner in Seattle.

And then Wyoming and Idaho become "wolf country"...aroooo!
Here's how the Wyoming State Police will find them next spring:(http://28.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lc2pbhrVqF1qdxp8mo1_500.jpg)
