So I have started a Journal here at DU about this trip. And thia is the first entry!

As many that have read some of my posts already know, I have lost my Home due to the May 22, 2011 Tornado that hit Joplin, MO. I can not get any help due to (according to FEMA and other agencies) being a renter that was just moving in. Due to this I also could not get my rent money back that my husband and I paid up for an extra month.
We also have no jobs due to the tornado and for some reason the majority of the clean up jobs are going to outsiders.

So we have sold what we had in storage(we were not all the way moved in yet). We placed packs on our backs and we are taking off. We hope to get up to the Northwest by the end of September. So Stay Tuned!

That is rather ambitious, don't you think?

Did you see this article? http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x1847514

DUmmie Lars39 suggests The Hiking DUmmie plot a course to North Dakota instead.

5. *hugs* I am so sorry for the way things have gone. I hope that this new journey

turns out to be the best of adventures, and that something truly wonderful awaits your arrival in the northwest!   Stay safe!

If she goes through Colorado, I expect something brownish to black, ugly, rather irritable, weighing in at around 500 pounds, and with big white teeth, on skis:

Another Day, another few miles.

this is a long track. Hope I get an answer to some of my resumes I have sent out ahead of me. Hope to have some pics soon! Will place on line for everybody to see!
The Hiking DUmmie either cannot spell, or managed to get onto a circle or go-kart track, and has been making endless laps all the day long.

How is it this DUmmie manages to have a cell phone with a data package, but only claims to have $200 to their name?  Who is paying for the plan?

In some other thread somewhere, The Hiking DUmmie intended to finish the day somewhere west of Pittsburgh, KS.  No answer from The Hiking DUmmie just yet on their actual whereabouts.

No word from The Hiking DUmmie on revising their one month estimate on the trip, even though they might be thinking of doing so, after today's long "track".

Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute.

The primitive expected to walk from Joplin, Missouri, to Pittsburg, Kansas on the first day?

No way; that's practically supersonic speed for human legs and feet.  No way.

I think one of them must be planning to do tricks for truck drivers....yes, some truck drivers are that desperate.

The days are a little jumbled on when/where they were/are at what time.  This may be their second or third day into the trip.

Here is what I found:

6. right now just to walk over the Missouri- Kansas line.

we should be on the west side of Pittsburgh KS by tomorrow night.

Since Joplin is SE of Pittsburgh, that is a big area they could have crossed over.

The DUmmie is using a laptop (and wi-fi) to provide updates to the DUmp, so no phone with data package, like I assumed.

25 miles in one day. Assuming they go in a straight line from Joplin to the SE corner of Washington, they won't get there before the beginning of November at the earliest. And there's no way they're going in a straight line. Add in delays for injuries and zero days to rest and refit, and they'll make it around December. And that's just to that corner. Add another month or so to make it to Seattle (assuming they never hitch) and I'd say we can start writing obituaries now for these DUmmies.

I still don't understand why the primitives aren't going in a straighter line from Joplin to Seattle, which would of course put them hiking through the Sandhills of Nebraska.

This Missouri-Kansas-Colorado trek is surely going to cost them some days, some miles, some energy, they don't have to expend.

Would you let them sleep in the house if they stopped by, or would they have to pitch their tent on the William Rivers Pitt?

Whatever they'd want; I'm a nice guy, one of the nicest guys one can ever hope to meet.

And a most-excellent host, as shown in the final chapter of "Mrs. Alfred Packer does Labor Day," when hippyhubby Wild Bill meets franksolich face-to-face.  It's coming out later this evening, after which the Packer Chronicles are closed, unless hippywife shows up on Skins's island again to provide more literary inspiration.

I wonder if the DUmmie used the walking option on Google maps to plan their trip?

Google show that walking from Joplin to Seattle can be done in just 27 days!  Unfortunately assuming that a typical walking pace is 3 MPH so 1,982 miles @ 3 MPH comes to 660 hours.  24 Hrs/Day, that comes to 27 days.

On yea there's that little sleep, eat, rest thing and good luck trying to keep 3 MPH up those mountain ranges.  I suspect their bodies should be found sometime after the spring thaw.

It's late in the year and all that, but does anyone suppose this primitive could end up in the running for one of the top DUmmies of 2011?

That is, if she doesn't end up a coyote-dined-upon carcass in the wilds of Colorado or Wyoming.

They must have been having a good time today.  it was about 105 there.  Tomorrow, 105 with winds.  In Kansas winds mean 50mph gusts.  The weather prognosticators tell you to put rock in your pockets cause it is going to be windy.  Maybe I will have to take a trip out 400 and see if I can see the primitives.  load my car with bush or Perry stickers, pull up in front of them and ask if they need anything.

There's a problem with that, though, sir.

Other than the moles and trolls, the bona fide primitives are all self-destructive.

They're not self-destructing as quickly as one hopes they would, but still, they're self-destructive.

So ultimately, in the end, they'd all be winners of a Darwin Award.

I think being devoured by coyotes, especially if it happens while she's logged into the DUmp, should be worth at least a nomination.
Or maybe there could be a special Khephra Award, with eligibility contingent on being logged into the DUmp at the moment of death.

I am having a hard time believing that they were denied any help or shelter after having their home destroyed. Something doesn't add up. And why the hell didn't they buy bus tickets? I sense some really bad problem solving skills here.

I'd say you are right on target.  Something simply does not add up.  If anything, the amount of help available down there was overwhelming.  Everyone I knew from down there, or knew of through friends and acquaintances, got help.

I found the repeated mentioning by The Hiking DUmmie that there was a lack of funds (only $200, if by some miracle you managed to miss it being mentioned) is very telling of something, although I'm not sure of what.

Maybe she's trying to encourage poor, stupid Beth to start a big DUmp fundraiser. It worked once.

All they need to do is time it to start during one of those brief periods when the enigmatic,
but moronic, Elad is left alone in charge of the big DUmp control panel.

Consistency is important to the lurking DUmmies.  Please don't confuse them with correct spelling and usage.  As you know, they are burning up many precious brain cells in their attempt to reach even a basic reading level.  New words (and clowns) scare them.

WIth much time driving from Wichita to Pittsburg and from Wichita to points west, I will tell you there are spots with no cell service.  For free Wi-Fi they are going to have to go into some of the larger towns.  From Parsons to Augusta, there is nothing.  From Hutchinson to Hays, good luck.  As a Kansas tax payer, I can see some of my tax money going to rescue their butts.

That was a stupid route to plan on anyway.

It would be like me hiking to St. Louis via Dallas.

And I remain greatly mystified as to why they were compelled to leave Joplin in the first place.

They were already there, their stuff was there, and despite the discombobulation caused by the tornado, it's proving only a temporary discombobulation, not a permanent one.

Life in Seattle can't possibly promise any more than life in Joplin.

The trekking twosome are awaiting responses to applications for employment that they have submitted in the Seattle area. Since they are members of the democrat party, the odds that the positions they applied for are for unionized governmental positions.

If I were these two, and I insisted on going to Seattle, I would have fled to the nearest larger city (Springfield or Tulsa), got on my feet for a month or so while living at a weekly motel/hotel, while working temporary placement positions until I had enough money for a bus ticket or plane ticket.

I wonder if they realize the aspens are already starting to turn at the higher elevations...right about where they'll be in a month or so.

Then again, this will be the post downthread in a few weeks anyway:

I would wire them the money for bus tickets, but I got a feeling the resolute martyr complex has set in.  The blame never befalls personal behavior or doings, but to the monsters created in the head by mental disorder - perhaps caused from the mindless reverberations formulated by the proverbial internet echo chamber.   All they have to do is ask however, and I would be more than glad to purchase bus tickets to the destination at whatever city they end up in for a bit.

Oh now, sir, don't even think about it.

If one has surplus money, and a primitive's in trouble or distress, best to donate the money to a local charity or a worthy individual one knows.....in the name of the primitive.

But I wouldn't send a cent to a primitive.

It is a futile attempt at compassion, as we all know conservatives are the most compassionate people because we actually do compassionate things wherein liberals expect everyone else to, by force in most cases.  Jumping frogs and pseudo pixel hugs are not compassion.  Nevertheless, it's a futile attempt because of the martyr complex and the likelihood that any offer would be ignored.  Honestly, I don't much believe the story.   It's pixel sympathy for political measure, a bouncy of sorts methinks.  I could be wrong, but at this point I don't think I am.

I'm waiting for Beth to start using her skills in fund-raising to help them.

Oh, that Beth that stole the funds?  Yeah, I remember that and I still think she raked in a tidy sum (not as much as they boasted about) for Andy's unnecessary JH surgery.  I think she pocketed most of the funds herself as her marriage to the stage clown was winding down.   She lives in a trailer somewhere in God's country now and is probably always looking for a way to swindle some funds.  She is one I would never send funds to even if the cause was a just one.

You know they didn't.  What?  It gets COLD in the mountains?  Even in SUMMER?

These people are DUmp democrats. I'm still betting they didn't realize there are mountains between Missouri and Washington.

Members of the flat earth society. Literally.

Greyhound bus fare out of Joplin to Seattle runs at a little over $200 for TWO people.  The Hiking DUmmie mentioned picking a Dell Inspiron laptop for $100.  With the $200 they have to their name, plus hocking the laptop for $20-$30 at a pawn shop, they'd have enough money to cover two tickets on Greyhound.

Yeah but they would arrive flat broke. This way they can save money, spend 30+ days on the road without a bath and arrive flat broke.

If y'all do any traveling to speak of.
You've no doubt run into the type that stay at highway rest stops, and panhandle for "gas money".
I run into that fairly often.
Had a couple gallons in a container once.
Offered to put it in his tank.
No deal, he just wanted money.
He got neither.
I can just see those two trying to pull that off.

Soon to be seen on a street corner in Seattle.

I believe that's the first time I've ever seen a ballerina in wingtips.

If it's dressed as a faerie sans wings, it's a DU male. So the wingtips make sense.

On the one hand, it reminds me of Stephen King's and Peter Straub's The Talisman. On the other hand, these are DUmmies, are they posting photographs of themselves at the DUmp? Even then, I'm hard pressed to believe this is anything more than DUmmie Internets Theater.

With an emphasis on the "PLUS".

It gets c-c-c-cold-d-d on the Front Range in late September. Should have retraced the old Oregon Trial. Guess they figured the residents of Colorado would be more accomondating to them than the peeps in Wyoming.

And then Wyoming and Idaho become "wolf country"...aroooo!

Here's how the Wyoming State Police will find them next spring:

Well, I've been ceaselessly scouring the DUmp since I got home from work today, all to no avail, as there was no word from The Hiking DUmmie today.

The last three days around here have been pushing the thermometer up close to 100 degrees again.  This probably does not bode well with them hitching a ride for the time being, since most people don't look too highly on their back seat smelling like they hauled around something from Monkey Island at the zoo.

I would imagine that The Hiking DUmmie has hoofed it way out into the middle of Red State hell (as GOBUCKS calls it), where they found out the wi-fi doesn't grow on bushes, and they have to sleep out every night.

Perhaps a better name for this DUmmie is the Big Rock Candy DUmmie?
