Just another reason to be thankful for the elections of 2010.
JoAnn Watson: Detroit deserves bailout 'at least' as big as GM
The Detroit News
Detroit —Councilwoman JoAnn Watson is reiterating her call for a government bailout of Detroit, saying the city that built the middle class deserves as much help as Wall Street or General Motors.
Addressing the City Council today during Mayor Dave Bing's budget presentation, Watson gave a spirited pitch for federal funds to help the city whose population declined 25 percent since 2000 to 713,777.
"We are worth it. We are worth at least as much as General Motors or Chrysler or the Wall Street bankers," Watson said. "It was this city that built military vehicles for World War II. It was this city that (invented) the middle class and the five-day work week.
"We should not be in a position to be victims. We are victors. And we should demand respect."
General Motors received $52 billion in government aid, while Chrysler received $12.5 billion, according to published reports. Mayor Dave Bing has traveled to Washington, D.C., repeatedly seeking more federal funds for Detroit.

And here is the woman demanding Billions of free money: Ms Watson herself.
With the corruption so rampant in Detroit city leadership....Why trust them with Billions?

Detroit isn't the only city suffering in this piss poor economy.
-
Most of that hell hole's suffering is self-inflicted. Graft, corruption, all the liberal "qualities".
-
Boy! does that call for some "racist" comments.
-
Good Gawd! That woman's dress is hideous, looks like she's wearing an old set of drapes. Reminds me of Carol Burnett in her "Gone with the wind" spoof.
"I saw it in a window and just couldn't resist"

Okay, Ms. Watson. That was 60 years ago. What have you done TODAY???
-
I wonder when the twerps in Boston will start thinking that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
-
Freeborn! That's one of my fondest childhood memories of television!! I can't believe you found it and posted it! Comic genius. :lmao: The curtain rod..... :rotf:
As for this story: Over my cold dead body. This is what happens with decades of liberal rule and voting incompetents in to be the "leaders."

Boston isn't nearly as bad as Detroit. Not even close.
That being said, there are some parts (Dorchester, et al) which are close, but as a whole? Hey, so what if Fenway had to get a waiver to sell soft drinks during the game, right?

Why would 25% of the population flee if it is such an awesome city?

It's awesome for those that have seen the light of the world, and have dipped into those many coffers.
Coleman Young's legacy has extended loooooooong after his death.

What amazes me is that 75 percent have stayed since 2000. Actually, even that much isn't true. If you take normal population growth in the US over the past 10 years (9.7 percent increase) Detroit should, if it were growing at the same rate as the rest of the United States, a population of about 1.05 million. Meaning, dear reader, that the population of Detroit has decreased in real terms more on the order of 30 percent.
And it gets still worse. In 1950, the population of Detroit was 1.85 million, and of the United States, 151 million. So if we were to extrapolate what Detroit's population SHOULD be had it kept pace with the rest of the nation, we should see Detroit at a population approaching 3.7 million, not 750K.
Meaning, if you crunch the numbers, that Detroit city has effectively lost 80 percent of its population since 1950. Detroit metro population in 1960 was just over 4 million. It has increased less than 7 percent in 50 years. It SHOULD be closer to 6-6.5 million had the area kept up with the rest of the United States in population growth.
IOW, Ms. Watson--it is YOU who should be held to account for your lack of production. YOU should be flogged and flayed alive for what you have done to a once-great city. Nobody should bail you out. Ride it down, Ms. Watson. You created it, you should live with what you and your fellow corrupt bureaucrats have done.
From the Wiki:
According to a study released by the Bay Area Center for Voting Research, Detroit is the most liberal large city in America, measuring only the percentage of city residents who voted for the Democratic Party.

But Sparky,
The liberals told us if we had all their social programs like HeadStart, child care, MedicAid, food stamps, public education, welfare etc. then the workers would be so-o-o-o-o content and grateful because they were secure in the social safety net then they would happily become more productive thus providing the profitability for these programs and increasing the standard of living.
How could this center-post of liberal ideology possibly be wrong?
-
What Detroit deserves would require a couple of visiting angels so the few salvageable people would have a warning to get out first.
-
How much does a nuke from high orbit cost? Surely we can cover that cost. O-)
-
When Detroit gets bailed out, than other cities and states will ask for it and that could lead to a very slippery slope.
-
I don't think that will happen, Ptarmy.
I read the comments over at the link. All except for one spewing liberal white guilt, all are saying NO ****ING WAY YOU THIEVING LOONS.
This also made Drudge.

I don't see any city or state getting a bailout. Reading those comments on news sites sometimes remind me of reading DU.

I'm in total agreement with this. It'll be the only way we can be sure. :fuelfire:

You want to bet on no bailout? Wait until Kal-EEEE-Forn-YA is on the brink.
Frankly, the day the Feds bail out a state is the day future historians will point to as the start of the Second American Civil War.
-
Shoulda thought about that when they spent 49 million dollars of stimulus money on school laptops last year.

How many of those laptops are now in the pawn shop?
-
According to O-nomics bailing out GM allowed workers to keep their jobs thus preserving the tax base.
Is this racist calling Obama a liar?
-
How many of those laptops are now in the pawn shop?
Same her JohnnyR. I know of at least one teacher who tried to pawn hers. Truly a sad waste of resources.

Over 50% are on some sort of Gov't entitlement program and between 25 and 33% work for the city.

I went to the DUmp to see what they had to say. One thread from Tuesday, with one response. "They don't have Wall Street, so they won't get a bailout." Crickets otherwise.

Exactly. That is so true.
