Title: El Paso, TX
Post by: seahorse513 on February 15, 2011, 10:38:11 AM
A friend of my nieces lives in ElPaso, TX. She is a midwife there. Anyway she had sent me some photos on ElPaso and surrounding areas.Mellinesa(sp?), New Mexico. What a beautiful area!! I have always wanted to go to Texas, now I really want to go!!!! They have these pecan groves that go on for miles!!! There is also a pic of the border fence...

It is funny that we live in such a country, that the differences (climate, topography)between the states are so extreme....

Texas is so huge that we pretty much have all types of climates and terrain.  East Texas has the piney woods.  Down around Houston is humid and muggy like the deep south.  The deserts out west are beautiful.  The panhandle plains are bitter cold in the winter with tons and tons of snow.  Central Texas has the beautiful rolling hills and scraggly Mesquite trees.  It's a very neat place to live.

I happen to have a travel book on Tx which came with a map. I was thinking of taking a plane to San Antonio and traveling by bus to El Paso. Will have to do some research...

That would bore you to tears.  You'd only see hundreds and hundreds of miles of featureless desert  My suggestion is to go from Texarkana to El Paso.

Yeah, but then there's Ft. Stockton. That's an education all by itself.  ;)

I grew up there and still haven't seen half the state. I'd love to go to Palo Duro Canyon and Big Bend.  I think a road trip is in order :)

Yeah, there isn't much to look at from the Metroplex to El Paso.  Went with some college friends on a spring break drive to Tucson/Phoenix/Vegas.  We got about an hour or two outside Fort Worth and were starting to get bored.  Well, being young & stupid, we saw a drive-thru liquor store & bought beer for the rest of the drive.  It seemed to take FOREVER to get out of Texas.

From Junction, TX to Ft. Stockton, TX is miles and miles of miles and miles but you can do 80 mph so it helps.

There are 3 places I love in Texas.  The east Texas Piney Woods, The Hill Country and West Texas around Big Bend/Alpine.  The Davis Mountains are AWESOME especially on a motorcycle.

Chris, we'll have to have a get together for those of in North Central Texas when you decide to visit.

Texas Cop, I noticed that you didn't mention North Central Texas!!  :hammer: :hammer: Whatsammater with you?!?!?!?!?

Ralph, yeah Dallas is just f'n WONDERFUL in July/Aug time frame IF you like 100+ degree temps and a high relative humidity.  :whatever:

Seahorse, the mountains East of El Paso are fairly nice, but once you get past Van Horn and all the way to Big Springs is pretty much desert. I've driven I-10 to I-20 quite a few times (and on into Dallas)

One year I decided to take a couple of summer school classes & couldn't believe how freaking hot it was.  Day after day after day.  Better than cold, though.

The absolute worst was the "formal" part of fraternity rush every year.  We all had to wear coat & tie for the first two days of rush.  Absolutely brutal.

The bridge across the middle of the lake is 2 miles long.  South of that the lake is between 5 and 7 miles wide depending on how you measure it.  It is roughly 50 miles from the top of the lake (hwy 19 bridge) to the bottom ... at the dam.

Same bridge.  Seems like someone dies on that bridge every couple of years.  It's a little better now since they don't allow fishermen to park on the shoulder.

I was stationed in El Paso--FT Bliss--for two years with 2d Squadron, 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment.  It was interesting country.  I'm used to green and hilly, kinda like the Adirondacks, and when I got down there, I was saying to myself:  "You ****ed up.  This is brown and flat!"

I think the bbq is good down here, but like Thor, I get mine from people that do their own.  Once stuff becomes too commercialized, the quality goes down hill.  Sure, you can get it, but it isn't all that special.  Although, Babe's Chicken House does ribs quite well.  For brisket?  I have peeps.  If I find em on sale for a good price, I will donate one to the bbq-er in question to do mine up right.

One thing I loathe around the bbq places around here is the premade tater salad.  It is a crime to buy it already made, and serve it.  IMHO.

Darnedest place I ever traveled through except the salt flats in Utah.

Desert at night in August, the Moon and stars look like they are only 100 feet over your head-- Amazing, the size of the moon out there.

Some places are much like being out to sea you can look as far as you can see 360 degree in all areas and see the curvature of the earth----
-----sort of.

I don't know really what I expected Texas to be like but every day after 10 hours on the road the landscape changed.  That is one Mother of a state, HUGE.

Pick where you are going very carefully, Unlike up here , Texas is so large it would be like you trying to visit all of New England and New York in one or two weeks.

Do not be surprised if you decide to transfer stores to live in Texas, Wide open spaces  gives meaning to Gods Country .

Hubby lived in Waco and LOVED it,  He got an apartment on the campus of Baylor U. through the company he worked for and a couple years was transferred back north, I think he cried all the way home.

No way Thor, worms are asexual, Seahorses are even stranger..The femail lays her eggs in the Males pouch on the belly  to fertilize and he gives birth.  Kind of fun watching that poor male squirting out hundreds of baby's.

Least that is what they tell me, if Seahorses were asexual, there would be no need for the male of the species.

Gee whiz, if you haven't been much of anywhere,  you need to see more!  Not Disney, but real stuff.  Texas is a good start, but there is so  much more.  I agree with Thor, Mount Rushmore is cool, but you have to spend so much time to get there, it really isn't worth it.

The problem with 'seeing' Texas is it is SO DAMN BIG.  Hell you come into Texas on I-10 in Orange and the mile markers are 990 range.  It is farther from me to El Paso than it is to Chicago!

One one of my leaves from San Diego (that's "vacation" for you civilians), my car broke down 60 miles West of Pecos, TX. just as I crested a hill. There was a snowstorm that hit El Paso and Van Horn behind us and the truckers were saying that there were no rooms in Van Horn. The tow truck driver took pity on me and towed me to Pecos for $50. My ex & I got the very last room in Pecos. Did I say that I was driving a Datsun?? The next morning, after freezing our butts off in the hotel room, I tore into the car to see what was wrong. Major Transmission damage due to some faulty maintenance by a dealership. Not a single place in town that carried ANY Datsun parts. Nearest place was Midland, which was still 150 miles away. MY Dad drove from Denison to Pecos, we hooked up the car with a tow bar and towed it back to Denison. That was New Year's Eve day, We fought a snowstorm most of the way back. After New Year's Day, I got the equipment together to pull the engine & tranny. I pulled those from the vehicle and figured out what I needed. $800 in parts later and waiting a week, I reassembled the tranny and reinstalled everything. Did I mention that it was snowing and sleeting all the time I was working on the car and I only had a carport to work under. I rented a torpedo heater and got a tarp and closed off the carport as best as I could. Thank God I was younger then. Even so, El Paso was only halfway between San Diego & Denison. Go figure....

I don't know.  At least Silsbee has some trees.  All Orange has is chemical factories and stench.  Of course the whole Golden Triangle is like that.  Anytime you drive past a plant and you 'feel' like you've been punched in the nose it can't be good.

It's all just a pit, after the Piney Woods, and until you are on I-10 well past Lake Charles.
