The Untold Story of the USS William Porter

Don't Shoot We're Republicans

From November 1943, until her demise in June 1945, the American destroyer 'William Porter' was often hailed -- whenever she entered port or joined other Naval ships -- with the greetings: 'Don't shoot, we're Republicans!'

For a half a century, the US Navy kept a lid on the details of the incident that prompted this salutation.

A Miami news reporter made the first public disclosure in 1958 after he stumbled upon the truth while covering a reunion of the destroyer's crew. The Pentagon reluctantly and tersely confirmed his story, but only a smattering of newspapers took notice.

Fifty years ago, the Willie D as the Porter was nicknamed, accidentally fired a live torpedo at the battleship Iowa during a practice exercise. As if this weren't bad enough, the Iowa was carrying President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the time, along with Secretary of State, Cordell Hull, and all of the country's W.W.II military brass. They were headed for the Big Three Conference in Tehran, where Roosevelt was to meet Stalin and Churchill. Had the Porter's torpedo struck the Iowa at the aiming point, the last 50 years of world history might have been quite different.

Come to think of it, if it had succeeded in sinking the Iowa, we might be in a better condition as a country. ::)

Henry Wallace.

Enough said.

I'm glad Franklin survived the experience.

Highly unlikely that a 500-lb warhead would have done a whole lot of damage to that armor belt.  Even so, by 1943, all the damage to the US had already been done.

The father of our Navy died after contacting Syphilis for a 12 year old chamber maid in Russia.

The father of our nuclear navy died from OLD TIMERS disease.

Black Beard never buried any loot, he and crew spent it all on fancy cloths and make up to go ashore wearing to impress the bar girls.

The incident in Philadelphia never happend.

The Sub Scorpion did not go down off the Azores it went down in the Black Sea.    Remember Israel also lost a sub at that time frame.

Who can forget the couple of years some insane Admiral took away the Sailor Suit to replace it with uniforms that looked like door men at a swanky hotel.

And who can forget when the Nimitz had a fighter pilot crash into the deck causing huge explosions and fires. When checked most of the pilots were ----drugged with------ cough syrup.

You say Funny Naval History, do you mean HAHA or strange.?

What-What- What did I say that got your panties in a twist.?

Let me tell you sweetheart Gena, the day the Scorpion went missing I saw hundreds of family's waiting on the docks in Charleston waiting for the boat to arrive.    The Navy knew there was a huge problem and allowed the dependents to gather waiting for their loved ones that the Navy knew most likely would never arrive.   Unbelievable the family's were put through this.

At that time I made an overseas call to my husband due to go on patrol for 3 mounts on a sub.     I finally got through to him by remembering him mention a bar in  Scottland and had him paged.     Perhaps the silver fox--something like that.

Anyway the poor man like to have crapped his pants to get my call, and more concerned with how the hell I had found him then the reason for my call.

I spent 3 months not knowing if he was dead or alive, somewhere the French, and Israelis also lost a sub.

Back then Gina, we the family were allowed to send what was fame grams, short and censored to our men on subs.   We could not get any reply and spent 3-6 months wondering if our husbands or sons were alive.

You Gina have no idea what the men or their family's survived not that long ago, we as family were the elate in the pecking force of Navy wives, we were potential widows for months of the year.

So You Gina do not like my take on Military matters, ----So what---I have every right, much more then others to critique or give high five to to our history of the men that go to sea.

Sea faring history is part of human experience, some thing worked others didn't.       Darn but i believe you are against the ship board movies to help moral that got their Skipper fired.

Gena, I will not replace my memory's or what I know to be liked by the likes of anyone. I will not sell out the lives of my children or family, to be LIKED.

I am Me , same as you, and if strangers such as you do not like me, that is your problem.  I do not live my life to be liked by anyone, so blow it out your blow hole and get back to me tomorrow.

Oh yeah.

That's right.  I keep on forgetting.

For some reason it's stuck in my head the only submarine disasters the U.S. Navy ever had were the Squalus in 1939 and the Thresher in 1962, and this being vesta, I thought she had just gotten them mixed up.

Three-year-old Chere Amtower huddled with her mother on a pier at Norfolk Naval Station in a driving rain, waiting excitedly for her father to come home.

It was May 27, 1968, and dozens of families braved foul weather to welcome the crew of the Scorpion, a nuclear-powered attack submarine, back from a three-month deployment. Chere wore a new spring dress and clutched a white straw purse purchased just for the occasion.

I don't think any nuclear subs have ever been stationed at Charleston. And very few, if any, have ever been in port there.

Sorry about the Charleston ship yard and not Norfork.

I was in Rotten Gotten at the time and was scared out of my pants at all this. New London Ship yard in CT.

I do know the Nathan Hale was in Charlston  port for some time until it moved to EB in Grotten for over haul.

About the Scorpian, I do remember a woman who recieved a letter from her son mailed "Off Boat" saying the boat was headed for the Black Sea to photograph ----Was it Russian or Turkish  comunication towers.   Now this stuck in my head as this one time was the last we heard of her.

Only a sub sailor can tell you if this is true or not but storys in the late 60' to mid 70's some crew talked about the game of ----Chicken, played with some foreign subs.

Ha---When the Thresher went down on sea trials I believe I had a dozen family working on that yard--everyone involved in some way with that boat. Not only did they loose the crew but the Civilian Sups. that were instrumental in all forms of the work done.

Probably one of the worse disasters to hit this area.    A real nightmare for just about everyone in the small comunity had some ties to that boat, be it the teachers in the schools the crews kids went to--the businesses in the area that had the family's for customers and knew them and family well.  The churches the family's attended, Every one thunder struck.

Here he comes,------ Rickover with fire snotting out his nose and flames 3 feet long from his ass.

Fights broke out in the bars the Civilian workers stopped at over what department was responsible for this state of affairs. Pipe fitters to the Nuclear Riggers were in hand to hand combat as they desperately prayed that their department was not to blame

Then it was found that the EX O had been sent home before the trials as his wife had gotten liniment in her eyes and was blinded.   A book was written about the luckiest man alive.

I was there and watched my father age over night.  One night I hear a sound down stairs to find my dad sitting with tears in his eyes holding a paper match book with the Ships motto on the front,  ' Dive Deeper, Stay Longer.'

BTW Frank, My cousin, Maclease was rescued from the Squalis and lived until about 10 years ago.  For all the years until his death he was the man in this area that once a year threw out the Wreath on the anniversary of the sinking.

Dad was on an ASR at that time and was steaming north as fast as the boat would go, This was before the SCUBA was invented by that crazy little French man.  The rescue using the diving bell--for some reason Hansons comes to mind, I may be wrong here. about the name of the bell, anyway Dad was so disappointed that he was too late to be there to rescue his cousin.

One of those odd quirks of fate we have, back in the early 1980 I met a friends uncle in VA. that had also survived the sinking.  His name was Mowery I believe and was well acquainted with my family---Small world.

the Thresher incident forced the USN to start looking into the design of pressure hulls and other systems.  the Navy's  investigation determined that the most probable cause of the accident was a leak in its engine room because of corrosions in its pipes. This in turn, could have caused electrical problems on the sub and shut down of the reactor. or so they.
the loss of the Thresher inspired the "safe sub" program

That happened around 1980 and was the cause of "Operation Golden Flow" to go full force in the Navy. (It had already been implemented, but was maybe once or twice a year and WASN"T supposed to be used for NJP, although  it was.)  An A-6 crashed aboard a carrier and autopsies showed that at least one of the pilots and an aircrewman had a bunch of cough syrup in their systems.

Thor, why were they using cough syrup?  Codeine?  I'm trying to wrap my head around why they'd choose that to abuse instead of alcohol.  Do they not have liquor on board?

Allegedly, they had colds. Shortly after that, the San Diego Union Tribune came out with an article alleging that 47% of the Sailors were drug users. A vague reference is made here: http://www.druglibrary.org/schaffer/misc/chemdep.htm  What I DO recall is that after the crash & the newspaper article, the SHTF in the Navy and the urinalysis programs went full force. People started getting busted for popping positive on the urinalysis. However, they really didn't address alcohol consumption because I had a Division Chief at that time that was an alky. He was as worthless as tits on a boar hog.

Yeah, I had an NCOIC at one of my units that would show up for work drunk as hell, but they never did anything about it.  The Army's substance abuse programs back in the 80's really didn't address alcohol.  As my career came to a close they were getting better at it.

My hubby before I knew him, lived in an apt with a bunch of sailors.  He got up one morning and there was nothing in the fridge but beer.  He drank one in front of the apt open window and some dickhead walking by reported him.  He had to go to counseling.  He hated beer, just drank that because it was all there was.   :lmao:

You must have some pretty ****ing amazing eyesight to be able to see "Hundreds" of family members waiting for an overdue sub at Norfolk from whatever ****ing bar you were hanging in at Grotan all the way up in Connecticut.

If you are going to tell a lie to prove a point DO NOT stand on the graves of dead sailors to make it. Are we TOTALLY ****ING CLEAR HERE?!

You Sir or Madam are a nincome poop.

There is something most different between telling a lie and misremembering something from the past that you witnessed.

Not only were we able to watch on TV the family's waiting and get updates of the unfolding tragedy but we had newspapers and WSUB radio giving much conflicting information hour to hour.  Groton was a SUB comunity and my navy housing held hundreds of family's with husbands on the boats.

When this happend the dependants of the SSBN my hubby was on kept my phone ringing off the hook as the boat was due to leave for patroll in 48 hours from the Locks in Scottland.[ Blue Crew]

For 3 firkin months we at that time would have no idea if our boat had gone down also.

It is not a frigging lie to get those two ports confused after 40 years or so, and each time the boat was on rotation from Blue to Gold crew we and the crew still had no idea what happend, It was a few years until they found the Scorpion and made us more anxious.

Now about history, are you going to tell me there were no race riots aboard ships off the Coast of Nam.??

Go on tell me there was no General in Nam that made his officers salute his pet duck or sent medic evack choppers into Saigon for Pizza.

Then Explain to me the navy ships in the 80's that had a crew of USN sailors and all Officers were Merchant Marine.    Or did I just dream doing an AB rip off and re lagging the engine room on the Kings Port.???

With all due respect ---Stay off the Torpedo Juice and Cherry's.

I don't think any nuclear subs have ever been stationed at Charleston. And very few, if any, have ever been in port there.

Actually, plenty have been.  Fast boats and boomers.  But none since the 1980's.

How in blue Hell does that happen, vesta?!?

Was a nub at prototype (S5G, Idaho Falls) when I had just gotten off of mids (8PM to 8AM) and was downing my second beer, still in dungarees, Sunday morning, when a couple of Mormon missionaries show up and want to talk to me and convince me to come to church.  Yeah, you can imagine how that went over.

I won't name names, but I know guys who were supposed to be doing plant startups instead sleeping it off behind the CRDM fuse panel.  Better still, guys so hung over they did an entire reactor startup and didn't remember it afterwards.  Oh, that was a good day, lemme tell ya...

Nice so did my 4 kids ,so what,--- do you want a one on one.?

Grandfather was a navy Chief, Dad was a navy Chief and all 4 kids of mine had a Navy Chief  for a father at some times in their lives.

Base housing furniture, had it just once waiting for our own stuff to be shipped to us.

We all cut our teeth on the fact that we could not make life long friends as we moved from Port to Port.    Schools were different everywhere we went about the country.

Interesting that you married a Army Officer, were you in the military at that time?

My being raised by a Chief Knuckle Dragging Boson Diver Rigger was interesting and my kids got both sides of the story, father and grandfather Chief to Officer.

I loved my Dad not because of his rank but because of the shore time he spent with me.  Only in later years did I learn what a hard hat diver went through and admire him for his actions as such.

Now you should understand that as family we were just as proud of our men that were E3 as E6--the kids could not care if their Dad was Any rank, that was their Dad and they loved him.

You my dear seem to have a problem here, was your Dad a Chief Cook?

Get with the program here, it was the support the military men got from home that have kept them Steaming.

You're nuttier than squirrel shit, you know that, right?

Back on topic? All righty then. Here's a pic of my Uncle Joe's ship in WWII, U.S.S.Chester. She was a heavy cruiser, one notch down from a battleship. She sported nine eight inch guns and plenty of other assorted nasties. Took a couple lumps from the Japs, a bomb and a torpedo but she gave a whole lot more than she took participating in several major engagements in the Pacific. Shelled the snot out of Iwo Jima. I don't know if she took any swipes at democrats though...

Uncle Joe passed last year, a very proud WWII vet who lied about his age when he enlisted at 16 in what he called "the real man's old time big gun Navy". Miss ya Joe, R.I.P.

nice lookin' cruiser. Northhampton class. bears resemblance to the Indianapolis. we operated out of mare island during the nam war. my late dad served on one. the USS Philadelphia (CL-41) Brooklyn class

she supported the N African landing in Nov 42. later on gunfire support for Pattons drive across N Sicily. then on to  Palermo. Krauts put out an APB on her because of the name.

Yes indeed, proud ships with proud crews. Wasn't the Indy the one lost after it dropped off one the bombs on Tinian? Capt. McVey, McPherson, something like that? Court martialed & crucified in true scapegoat fashion.
Namvet if you ever make it up to my redneck of the woods (Buffalo, N.Y.) make sure not to miss teh BUffalo Naval and Servicemen's Park. They have a light cruiser the U.S.S. Little Rock, a Fletcher class DD, the U.S.S. The Sullivans, a WWII deisel sub, a P.T. Boat and several aircraft. Quite a nice park.

that's right. the Indy delivered the A bomb components to tinian Island. the Hiroshima bomb. after leaving she went south to guam for orders. join in on gunfire practice in the PI. somewhere along the way she was sunk by the I-58. CO was McVey. the court martial was a kangaroo count. quite a story

My ship during Desert Storm:

The aircraft maintenance shops were one deck above and athwartships of the mine encounter. We're coming up on that anniversary here in a few days. We stayed on station for a week afterwards in order to complete our mission. One frame further back was the ammo locker.

Quote
While assigned to a MCM force sweeping toward the shore of Faylaka Island during the Gulf War on January 17, USS TRIPOLI and the other ships of the MCM force were targeted by Iraqi Silkworm anti-ship missile fire control radars. The MCM force moved out of the missiles' range and after coalition forces destroyed the missile site, the ships returned to the area on February 18, at 0240 local time.

At 0345, after operating for 11 hours in an undetected Iraqi minefield, the USS TRIPOLI hit a moored Iraqi contact mine creating an explosion and ripping a 16 by 20 foot hole below the water line. As USS AVENGER (MCM 1) and USS LEADER attempted to assist the damaged warship, USS PRINCETON (CG 59), while unknowingly heading along a line of Manta mines, continued to provide air defense for the MCM Group but at 0715, also hit a Manta mine in 16 meters of water. As damage control teams overcame fires and flooding aboard USS TRIPOLI and USS PRINCETON, the minesweepers USS IMPERVIOUS, USS LEADER, and USS AVENGER searched for additional mines in the area.

USS TRIPOLI was able to continue her mission for several days before being relieved by USS LA SALLE (AGF 3) and USS NEW ORLEANS (LPH 11).

USS TRIPOLI then proceeded to Bahrain for repair where the photos below were taken.

What wasn't said was that there were three other mines under the Tripoli that DIDN'T explode. The minesweepers towed us out of the minefield.

in the 60's I bought a used red 62 Impala SS with a 409. kiced myself in the ass for selling it

the beach boys rubbed it in. the days of the muscles cars were awesome.

Looks like the same class of heavy cruiser as the USS Indianapolis, the ship that transported the guts of Little Boy (the first nuke dropped on Japan) and later was torpedoed and sank, leaving most of the crew swimming in shark infested waters for some 6 days before the survivors were rescued. The "swayback" in the center is indicative, I think.

Backed down on the Little Rock more than a few times at Roosy Roads during Springboard exercises. Got to visit with a good friend who was on the CMA force, we had both shipped from Newport.  They did have a brief problem with 'the bro's' and 'others' protesting one time when they came in but it was short lived when someone (XO maybe?), came over the 1mc and told them to disperse or the radar would be aimed aft and turned on to sterilize the whole bunch of them.  It was nicknamed The Acid Rock at the time and I can tell you the CMA had quite a collection of paraphernalia.  The year was 1971.

Question was it Captain McVey that years later died not knowing he had been cleared of all charges in that Mess.?

yes he did. although cleared of all charges it was not made public

the surviving crew members banned together to clear his name and restore his honor. petitioning congress, the senate and every prez that took office. finally in 2000 they completed they're mission

Quote
A giant step to clear the name of Captain McVay was taken in October of 2000 when legislation was passed expressing the sense of Congress that his "military record should now reflect that he is exonerated" for the loss of the USS Indianapolis and the lives of the men lost in that tragedy so many years ago.

When President Clinton signed that legislation on October 30, implying his concurrence, it thus represented the view of both Legislative and Executive Branches of our federal government that Captain McVay was not responsible for the disaster which led to his court-martial, his conviction, his humiliation, and the end of his promising Navy career.

http://www.ussindianapolis.org/resolution.htm

there's a footnote about the Cole. I never heard of the Indy disaster until I saw the movie "jaws" - includes scenes from the movie mission of the shark. embedded link removed

I don't think any nuclear subs have ever been stationed at Charleston. And very few, if any, have ever been in port there.

Squadron Six was out of there back in the day, and before the Kings Bay base opened, the Naval Weapons Station near Goose Creek was one of the "off crew" sites for boomer fags.

Just happen to know cause the Cable and Holland were the tenders out of Charleston back in the late 80's/early 90's, and I went to Radcon School in the Shipyard there.
