Whether it’s a fat population, high rate of STDs or excessive tax rate, it turns out that every state ranks dead last in at least one unsavory category. Check out the map (click image to enlarge) to see what your state is the worst at, then review additional stats and references.
1. Alabama: highest rate of stroke (3.8 percent) (tied with Oklahoma)
2. Alaska: highest suicide rate (23.6 suicides per 100,000 people in 2004)
3. Arizona: highest rate of alcoholism
4. Arkansas: worst average credit score (636)
5. California: most air pollution (15.2 micrograms per cubic meter)
6. Colorado: highest rate of cocaine use per capita (3.9 percent total population)
7. Connecticut: highest rate of breast cancer

I thought Wisconsin was the best at binge drinking.
Hats off to Illinois who is actually good at something useful. How did that happen with all the libs running that state?
-
Illinois - Robbery. We're number one, we're number one.

Not being "green" means not buying into the propaganda.
Unless you are talking about the binge drinking, I was having fun with the way that poster was worded. In Wisconsin, especially in a college town, people tend to see drinking as a bona-fide skill.

It doesn't surprise me that NY has the worst commute . . . or that the worst drivers are Massholes. Washington State being tops in bestiality, though . . . ! :o
-
I was hoping Nevada would get gamblers or something. The crime thing just doesn't seem to fit. At least I don't think our crime is that bad here.

Shivers, you don't recall that "Tourist Farm" that was in the news awhile back...
Is there a vomit smiley?

I think Maine got the dumb state, it was cut off, so couldn't tell :thatsright:

I've been to New Mexico a few times. I didn't find them anti-social.

There was a guy on one of the horse forums with a phenomenal horse. Turned out he was into that. While he was away for smuggling coke into WA, someone hid the horse. Big story. We out the sick ***tard everywhere he pops up.
-
I can see Wyo having a high number of fatal car crashes per capita.
In many spots you can see 10 to 20 miles down the road, and no one else on it. Seems to tempt some into excessive speed. Until they hit a swale in the road or an antelope.

I like Idaho's shame :-)
And the worst Air Pollution in California is down south, so I'm good.

Having been to South Carolina and Florida many many times, I find it hard to believe there are more mobile homes in So Carolina than Florida.
TN is highest in corruption. Compared with Illinois? :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: I don't think so!!

And yeah, NH sucks when it comes to corporate taxes, but gotta pay for lack of income and sales taxes somehow.

Haven't been to Taos or Santa Fe, have ya? But then again, those are the magnets for people who were too ****ing wierd/liberal for California. No big shock there.

Well, Memphis isn't overly stocked with upstanding, God-fearing, law-abiding politicians, yunno. They go to church but they're about as pious as Lord Zero is. :whatever:

Well, all I can say is I'm glad I live in MO with people that just aren't that good with money, instead of in Washington State.

OK NOW YOU DONE IT MY DEAR MAN. I was raised on Both sides of the river between Maine and New Hampshire and claim both states as home.
I am one of the generation of children born in a Federal prison on CV island. Yup the Castle, it had the dispensary and hospital attached to the prison at that time ---Hell of a place and was much worse then the storeys tell. Came my turn and my oldest son was also born there.
I guess you think that the Mainers that worked in the shipyards building a Submarine every 8 weeks, working 18 hours a day and the idiots that half killed themselves to churn out war ships in Portland Maine were nuts, but because of them I do not speak German or Japanese.
Maine"s education was not so good but if one was willing to work by the time they hit 60 they owned their own homeland summer camps, good cars and their kids went on to college.
Hard work is and was their motto, and today on the coast people still work at a craft taught by their grandparents. They may not become wealthy but they can as they age pass down 5-10 generations of skill and make a decent living.
Tell me about dumb states, then take a ride up the coast to Canada. Turn around and take the Amtrack to DC.---horrid conditions some so bad the scenery it leaves me slack jawed---Humans live like this????
ARGGGGGGG this is the one subject that raises my dander. We may not be rocket scientists but we have a work ethic, or had until the liberals moved north to allow each one of us to survive the weather, the Politics, wars and insane government regulations that American fishers of the sea have to abide by as foreign ships come in and destroy their equipmen and ignore the rules we Americans have to abide by.
Maine and New Hampshire pulls it own weight, every 3 rd. house has an Archie Bunker living in it.-----So what, ----Live Free or Die, or in Maine live a life well spent.
Do you Sparky care to discuss Governor LA Page and his ball busting common sense.??

People in Maine are so dumb:
--They trip over the cord of their cell phone.
--They thought Taco Bell was a phone company.
--You got sent out for a 10-lb water hammer. AND CAME BACK WITH ONE.
--If they put the average Mainer's brain on the edge of a razor blade, it'd look like a BB on a six-lane highway.
--They think a good job is putting the M&M's in alphabetical order.
--They get fired for throwing out the "W"s.

Really, so you can live your whole life without crossing into Maine, so that means you must work with Mainers.
Does this mean your boss is from Maine and you resent having to work for someone less intelligent then you ???

RIF, vesta. You know, reading--when you put words together to communicate thoughts. Oh wait, gotta get simpler. You know, WORDS, those things...aw, **** it.
Did I say I've never been to Maine? Quite the contrary. I've made no such claim. However, I am rather reluctant to go there unless there's something there I can get nowhere else in a convenient manner, such as going to Cabela's.
However, the intelligence of the average slack-jawed, mouth-breathing, booger-eating, banjo-picking, foot-shuffling, Allen's Coffee Brandy-soaked denizens makes my haste back across the border to my humble abode that much faster.
Unfortunately, as they have not yet mined all the roads leading into New Hampshire, I must then contend with their 40-mph driving, no turn-signaling, double-lane hogging antics anywhere within five miles of any New Hampshire Walmart, Market Basket, or Dollar Tree, particularly on the first weekend of the month after said gene pool floaters have had their EBT cards reloaded, and then I have to listen to them bitch about how little they get as they haul themselves and their six fatass kids into their dualie trucks or Voyager minivans to commiserate with each other in anticipation of a visit from the local gendarmes on their side of the border for their latest domestic violence episode, whereupon the wife will tearfully tell cousin Bob the cop, "Don't take him, I can't afford the $50 bail, and he's got all the oxycontin!"
Now tell me I haven't been to Maine.

How did TN beat IL (or NJ) in corruption?
-
How did TN beat IL (or NJ) in corruption?
One word: Memphis.
-
How about cities of shame? (Good movie title.)
If there's a name for treating your citizenry like checkbooks and not people, and not caring how miserable you make your citizens' daily lives, in fact frankly reveling in making us miserable as if the city government was the bureaucracy of Hell, and having a government that, on the whole, would much rather have NYCers live in some other place and just send money, NYC is champ-een.
TN, TX, and AZ are high on my list of retirement states, although no doubt there are cities to avoid. I understand I'd have to hire a coyote to get me into TX.
-
One word: Memphis.
How does that beat Chicago?
-
I don't know if you've been to Maine or not....but from the experience described...I would say you have been to East Tennessee... :whistling:
Substitute methamphetamine for the oxycontin, and that could very well be north-central Missouri as well.....
-
One word: Memphis.
For Memphis to beat Chicago, Trenton, Jersey City, or Camden - dayum is all I can say.
-
How does that beat Chicago?
You must not know about the Fords or idiots like Willie Herenton.
-
Haven't been to Taos or Santa Fe, have ya? But then again, those are the magnets for people who were too ****ing wierd/liberal for California. No big shock there.
100% correct. It is a freak show.
-

I'm surprised we didn't get prescription pill abuse instead of corruption.
Oxy is a horrendous problem here. Rx's for ADD and ADHD drugs are handed out to any kid that the school system suggests needs it. Or parent tells their kids pediatrician the kid has trouble sitting still or focusing on school work ( :censored: ).
Meth and marijuana are still very easy to get, as they are big sources of income in the surrounding rural counties. Dollywood coming to Sevier County brought so many new business into that county, turning it into a tourist mecca, that tourism replaced marijuana growing as the biggest industry in that county. Marijuana growing took the place of moonshine.
People go straight down I75 to N Florida, down to about Tampa, and doctor shop at pain clinics....going from one to another, where they either get a prescription, or the clinic dispenses the oxy -which is really easier, because then they don't have to look for a pharmacy. They come back up and sell it. Its become the "drug of choice" of those with any access to money. Kids at the private schools, those at the schools in the "good" areas of town, housewives.
It's also a very easy drug to get from one's regular physician here. Walk in with any type of pain, and walk out with a 'script for Oxy!
It's so prevalent among the high school and college kids....parents aren't aware, until they start missing cash or stuff around the house, or they look for their bottle of leftovers only to find it gone. What amazes me, is how people with the addiction are so functioning, until their habits are so intact. I heard about a middle-aged woman who was in rehab (from someone in there with her) that she was taking between 50 and 75 pills A DAY!!! (I would be dead taking a fraction of that!)
-

Godot, if you want to end up in AZ, AVOID Tucson like the plague. Sheriff Dumpdick is not at all the only looney tune in town.
Sierra Vista, OTOH, is a good, God fearing, conservative small city, for the most part. With significant nutbag exemptions who make reading the SV Herald's On Your Mind comments once a week simultaneously :rotf: and :argh:
Mostly though, I find myself sympathetic to moronic liberals. I'm sure Mama dropped 'em on their pointy little noggins more than once during their formative years, which is why they were knocked senseless for life.
Ah, crap, don't let the lib lawyers hear that theory. They'll be hunti' down all the ****ing idiot Dems out there and many a forest will be sacrificed for the paper needed to contact every idiot Dem in this country, which means contacting every Dem.
Yes, I have had grandma babysitting duty all day so if this makes no sense, I blame the kiddo.

OH SEA, Sparky just needs to gripe about something, cabin fever is hitting us all lately.
Then could be the fact that the Mainers that Lobster year round in all types of weather may ultimately make more money then he does sitting in his nice warm office.
Must piss him off that these dudes some with just a GED in schooling but a PHD in weather, ocean currents, the ability to work out on the sea in 20- weather 18 hours a day and for some reason love it, some years feast some famine, darn, and Sparky complains about working 12 hours a day or a couple feet of snow on the roads. Some men go to work in a suit and tie and collect a pay check, Some farm the sea, put them both together and I bet neither of them can find Fritlaly on a world map.
-
Yah--marine diesel is going for $3.50 a gallon, maintenance on boats is through the roof, and for those 18-hour days in shit weather you're getting HOW MUCH at the dock for lobster? What is it, $2.75, 2.80 per pound? And wasn't there a story not too long ago about a bunch of lobstermen SHOOTING each other over traps?
Yeah, I'm the idiot because I'm sitting in my office (or shop, or in the plant) TAKING HOME more than those lobstermen DREAM of making. I don't minimize their work, dearest, but don't think for a second they wouldn't trade places with me in a heartbeat. But then again, mention the words, "phasoring", "metering", or "protective relaying", their eyes will glaze over.
Bottom line--there's a reason why Maine's population has dropped below that of NH for the first time since 1800. Yeah, you read that right. 210 years. Because anyone with half a brain has already left.
But Maine still has you. Be proud, toots.

Can you repair a dead diseal out at sea by yourself with a force 6 sea.? what is the first thing you would do if your boat was sinking, after the mayday call????

Yeah Sparky there are some places that are strange here or there in Maine, why do you think Stephen King came up with most of his dreadfull story's.?? Those small towns Down East are fodder for a horror writer.
Then there is Ogunquit that advertises for Gay tourists to spend the summer and Then the Gays complain about the Canadian woman tourists sunbathing on the beach top less and all hell breaks out.??
It's them darn Mass. big money people that move to the state that change our lives. They put demands on the State government that wreck a town budget. Hell they expect the town to put in fire hydrants in a sub division right on a lake that can supply more water in a fire then i5 hydrants can..
Perfectly good dirt roads with just a couple dozen pot holes that can swallow a washing machine and everyone knows where they are----the New Bees insist those roads be paved of crying out loud.
New out of state people come in and change 10 generations of tradition, They want electricity and sewage, cell phone towers and cable.
Land that has been in family's for since forever now has a portion of their land claimed by public domain to install all these new fangled things that the locals never asked for.
New folks come into town and object to the Churches ringing for their bells for 5 minutes as a call to worship on a sunday morning at 11 AM. Then these new folk build a Mosque with a PA system that can be heard for 5 miles around to blast out their call to prayer 5 times a day 24/7.-----Tolerance we are told, YAH Right.
Sparky I read the Bangor Paper the other day and it really surprised me at how life has changed in Maine.
Last time I was way up north western Maine in a small town called Abbot Maine, 40 acres of land was for sale for $5,000.I came home, told my son, he told a coworker and he went up and bought the land. Lots of land up there in unincorporated towns, a great life if one wants to disappear . We got lost on one dirt road and came across a Wolf Farm, darn I have never seen one in the wild and this farm rehabilitated wolves to turn back into the forest. They were in wire inclosure's next to the road and we parked and watched them watch us for some time.
Anyone that is tired of the day to day grind of work can take out their 401k plan and go to school for small engine repair and work up to the bigger ones. Buy cheap land and open a business to repair boat engine's, snow mobile, motorcycle, tractors. One can live in a travel trailer for a couple years until the business begins to bring in money. Take the back end of the land and put in some outhouses and rent out space to campers that hunt or ice fish in the winter.
Once anyone that has little to loose try this and it works, and it will, 20 years later they will be spending winters fishing for Marlin from their own boat in the warm waters.
Maine has more self made people then any other state I know of, they take a risk and face it down.[/color]

Sorry for changing your post I tried to put my answer or question in color but it did not work.

You know you can edit and correct them in a certain amount of time, do you not?
Again, thank you for once again proving my point.
And YES, given my life experiences, I think I'd know exactly what to do if I was stupid enough to be caught out on a boat where I shouldn't be when the shit hits the fan. Damage control and all that. They didn't give me those dolphins out of a Cracker Jack box. Now the "water wings" they give to surface pukes, those are a different story.
And no, you cannot blame the Massholes for your predicament.

I stand corrected here and you are correct that your earned Dolphins is something to be very proud of. Both my sons are oh so proud their dads won them at a very young age.
Both of my boy were eligible to go into the Sub service by their scores on tests ,one went to Maine Mariten Academy and the other into the Army-----Who knows why, their fathers, grandfather and great uncle had rode the boats, they marched to their own drummer.
Tell me sparky, did you drink your Dolphins or pass that tradition go by.??
We are off subject here, and yes I do find fault with the outsiders that invade Maine and expect it to change to their own benefit.
I love the home State of mine and I get a huge laugh out of the new Governor that tells it like it is. BTW I live in New Hampshire and I would never move back unless they drop the State income tax.----Not all of us Mainers are stupid.

Cooj loved to make bullshit claims too. Look where that got him when people (me) called him on his bullshit. It's a rough and tumble world out there, toots. It's okay to just sit on the sidelines and let someone else do stupid shit.
Bottom line, if you can't defend your actions/statements/ideas, best you don't put a target on your back until you can. When your mental machete is about as sharp as a butter knife, it's not going to go well for you.
Does that make me mean? Heartless? Rude? Hey, life is all of the above and so much more. Sorry if not everybody is into playing pattycake with people who do stupid things, but you put it out there.

Sorry if not everybody is into playing pattycake with people who do stupid things, but you put it out there.
no, you say it like it is, and yes I did....sigh.I guess that cake ain't gonna bake....

Thanks for warning me off Tuscon, Boud; I'd kind of already figured out that they're more than a little Madison, WI-like there. Anyway, I want to get away from big cities, period, anywhere. The suburbs of a small city would be fine, and Sierra Vista is definitely that (small). I checked the population; around 44,000. Imagine that. A city that doesn't even hit 100,000--now that's my idea of sane living. I am DONE with large cities (well, when I retire). It's not normal, living pressed in with millions, always seeing people everywhere you turn.
I like your style, Boud--when in doubt, blame the one who can't talk. But no head dropping! Don't want to turn the kid into a lib.
-
Well, depends--how small you wanna get? I know a lot of folks retired to places like Show Low, etc. Depends on how much you like cold, you could try out Flagstaff.

I'm thinking (dreaming) of a house, surrounded by trees and wooded area, about 10-20 minutes away from a city/town about as big as Sierra Vista, although even as small as 10,000 would be fine. (In that respect, Show Low sounds good, and I like the name. 6 perfect!)
Don't really want cold, though.

Well, you would like Sierra Vista very much, except for the powerlessness of our local populace to have an effective conservative voice in Congress. We have parts of liberal Tucson to thank/curse for our representation by Giffords. :argh:
However, today it's a high of around 60, low around 30, give or take several degrees. I have the heater running and set to 72, but only because my grandson's bedroom gets colder than the rest of the house if I don't turn it on.
Personally, I LIKE the cold and snow and totally relished our tours in Germany. Maybe though, as I'm over 50 now, the sunshine in summer and the mild winters aren't such a bad thing for the old bones....we have been known to have a snowfalke or two drop on us in summers past since we're up in the mountains but it's not so bad.

And for our newer members, a picture of Vesta discussing, well, whatever she discusses...

Awww. Truly, Vesta is the Queen of the non-sequitur, but she's a good egg.

Are you sure those are dolphins? They look more like two carps kissing a shitcan.
:fuelfire:
I've only been to Bath, ME, but I was quite impressed by the yard birds there. Miles of difference beyween them and the buttdarts in Pascagoula.
Blecch!
Bath had lots of friendly people, was very clean and beautiful, and I am looking forward to going back.
The women did seem to be rather large, though....

Bath is a beautiful place, if you get a chance , visit the maritime museum a few more miles down the road

We were driving the coast at one time north of Bath I believe and just happend to glimpse of a stone fortified complex flying the American flag in 3-4 places. We got off the highway and meandered around until we found FORT KNOX. We drove in, parked and began to look around to find this Fort had been a prison for the Confederates captured. Huge underground vaults that housed everything from a medical dispensary to Officer quarters. Big hundred + year old cannons pointing out to sea, lots of signs explaining what was what.
Some of the underground chambers we could not explore as we had no flashlights but plenty of others had come equipped to do so.
I began to wish I had brought my metal detector with me and noticed tourists with maps of the area. I asked someone where they got the map and they told us they are given out when you get to the entrance and pay to get in.---Pay to get in??????
We both felt so guilty about driving in before the staff had set up that we found the gift shop and bought $30.00 worth of souveneers and signed up for monthly news sent through the mail.

Vesta, I am so very sorry. I did make an assumption and posted without checking for a Fort Knox in Maine. You are right, I was wrong.
Forgive me for assuming you were being a bipolar twit.
:lmao:
Seriously, I am sorry I assumed without checking first.

Nice Link Vesta, I may stop in there this summer if I can get a trip down the coast scheduled. I don't remember if I have ever been there before or not.
We use to go to Fort Popham when I was a little kid.
Have you ever been to the Fort Western?
http://www.oldfortwestern.org/
I have been trying to get to Fort Louisbourg for years but things keep coming up. Maybe this year we will make it.
http://www.rvtravelog.com/canada.dir/louisbourg.dir/louisbourg1.htm
One of my relatives was wounded there long before the Revolution in a battle with the French who had been raiding all up and down the coast. The Colonials took it upon themselves to do something about the problem and took Fort Louisbourg. The British made them give it back. :whistling:
