Cafe owner ordered to remove extractor fan because neighbour claimed 'smell of frying bacon offends Muslims'

A hard-working cafe owner has been ordered to tear down an extractor fan - because the smell of her frying bacon 'offends' Muslims.

Planning bosses acted against Beverley Akciecek, 49, after being told her next-door neighbour's Muslim friends had felt 'physically sick' due to the 'foul odour'.

The fan has been in Beverley's Snack Shack takeaway in the Shaw Heath area of the town for the past three years.

Mrs Akciecek and her husband Cetin, 50, - himself a Turkish Muslim - work more than 50 hours a week buying, preparing and cooking hot and cold sandwiches and hot-pots for their customers.

Today mother-of-seven Mrs Akciecek said she plans to appeal against the decision.
She said: 'I just think it's crazy. Cetin's friends actually visit the shop, they're regular visitors, they're Muslim people, they come in a couple of times a week.

Seems rather bizarre, since the muzzies come in the restaurant as often as they do. Maybe they're pissed because they're drooling so much  and their mouths are running dry.

Bacon is good eats......

You can't remove the extractor fan.

If you remove it greasy vapors accumulate and creates a health and fire hazard.

Fresh off the frying pan and into our tins.  This candle smells just like a delicious slab of fried bacon!  Available in 8oz and 4oz tins.

That is a big part of it but imagine your food being cooked in a kitchen that is not being properly ventilated, the average temperature is around 80 to 90 degrees with grease clinging to everything. Either the restuarant has to close the kitchen and scrub EVERYTHING top to bottom (vapors swirl, after all) thereby losing money and time while increasing expenses. Stale grease becomes putrid...FAST!

Doubters are free to take a grease jar filled with pan drippings and set it under a lamp for a few days.

Depending on their volume and menu they might have to do it at least once a week.

Been there, done that.  I spent ten years working in kitchens... pulling the fan filters and washing them was a daily chore.

If you want to try this at home, fry up some chicken in an open pan without using the range's exhaust fan or opening a window.

No. I think it's done to "aggravate" or "instigate" to the average American. :censored:

It offends me too. Only because our ventahood just broke, and it stinks up the house forever.

But seriously, frying bacon isn't against the law. If it offends you, you probably shouldn't live near a place that fries bacon. Instead of bitching about the smell of the freaking bacon, MOVE.

I would hazard a guess that the muzzies who are making the biggest stink about the bacon stink are recent immigrants to England who feel that the locals need to change their way of life to accommodate them and their bizarre beliefs.

I'm invested in Pork Bellies.....need some?

Last Sunday, we went to this beachside restaurant for brunch. We were sitting at the bar eating, and these guys sitting down from us were served something that smelled incredible. The cook/chef came out a bit later and was standing next to me talking to the bartender and I asked him what it was those guys were eating.....he said "I'll be right back"....

Next thing we knew, he was back with a small plate of these "things". He wouldn't tell me what it was other than that it was pork  and "heart attack on a plate"...until after I tried it...and he was smart to wait, as I might not have tried it otherwise.  It turned out to be strips of "tri-cooked" pork belly. He braises it, then bakes it for several hours. Then slices it up into strips and throws them in the deep fryer. OH. MY. GOSH. The guys who were already eating them, gave us a container of the "dip" they were using with them....it was a smokey horseradish sour cream. Too smokey for me, but I tried them in the Sriracha hollandaise sauce that I had....

That's what I was thinking too. Also, I think they are paranoid. As I said, I think Islamic culture is more likely to produce paranoid psychopaths.

Sriracha Hollandaise sauce???

Sriracha Hollandaise sauce???

Yep!! And it was soooooo good!!

Basic Hollandaise, and the chef just adds Sriracha to it, til he likes the taste. It definitely had a "kick" to it, but not to the extent of being all kick and no flavor. M had the lobster Benedict, and that's what was supposed to come with it, but he took the regular. I wanted to try it, so asked for some....I was really glad that I did. They also had black truffle Hollandaise that I wish I would have tried too.

I used to make Hollandaise from scratch until I tried Knorr's packets. It's easier and tastes just as good, just make sure to use real butter. I'm thinking it would be really good with beef or pork tenderloin too. I usually make Bernaise for  beef tenderloin but I might try this too.

If a person has to cover the flavor of their beef with sauces then it isn't worth eating!!

There tends to be a LOT of flavor in sauces. You mean you don't eat gravy?

On taters and veggies not on the meat. Meat done right needs no help.  :-)

ETA: Of course that only applies to things that are'nt supposed to be smothered in something. Meatballs and such are made to be.

I'm laughing as I write this question, but I realize you're serious about the way you prefer your meat - and that's fine. I absolutely respect your choice, though my training in cooking is French-oriented, and that means sauces.

Here's the question:

"Do you segregate everything on your plate in single little piles, and then eat everything one item at a time so as not to 'taint' the meat with a sauce?"

    :uhsure:

+1 more.  If the beef is prepared properly, no sauce is needed.  If it isn't done right, there isn't a sauce in the world that could save it.

Homemade is best (it's easy).  Many places use frozen steaks from a box.

For those that have lived in military housing.

Friend of mine who was raised in the Philippians met and married a  US Service man.

My friend was a teacher, had 7 sisters and a father that lived on a farm that used water Buffalo to plow.

She lived in America and Military housing and the neighbors on both sides of her were not friendly, she was Asian, her husband Black.

She told me that there was not one week when she and family were not harased by the neighbors.     Her Mother came from the island to visit her for a couple of weeks and darn if they were not reported to housing for having a guest.

Her mother was a tough old babe and did not back down.  In her culture there is some kind of a fish dish that stinks to high heavens to outsiders but is beloved by that culture.

Mother began to prepare the fish with the native spices and place it on a BBQ in the back yard.     My friends husband would run for the car and head for the Club on base as the smell caused his balls to shrink to peanut size.

Sort of like smelling salt cod cooked in milk for us Yankees.

Within an hour or less 6 people had called the housing office to complain of this awful smell.

Out came the housing authority to inspect the problem.     RESULT--

My friend and her mother were cooking their food, this is what they ate to live.   One cannot regulate what a person eats this is their culture.

BTW, a few years back at work we had some Temps from wherever and when their food went into the microwave at lunch the smell was of dirty diapers.

I can relate to this. We had the same situation at my last job.
