Woman Vows to Only Shop at Black-Owned Stores (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x7817473)
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- We all have New Year’s resolutions. Ultimately they all involve changing some habit into positive behavior. But one local woman’s goal benefits an entire community.
"I've made a commitment to shop only black-owned businesses for an entire year," said Lora McDonald.
As a social worker, McDonald found she was earning a living off working with blacks and wanted to find a way to put some of that money back into the black community. She decided to patronize only black-owned businesses for an entire year.
In two months McDonald has struggled with singling out those stores to meet all of her needs. She has, however, found the only black-owned grocery store in Kansas City - Leon’s Thriftway.
“Their service is incredible, like I never carry my own groceries to my car," said McDonald.

I wonder what the DUmmies would think if someone were going to shop at only white owned stores....

I used to see those kinds of declarations when I would lurk at a couple of black-oriented websites (another thing which would "racist" if whites did it--have a mainstream white-oriented website). I always wonder how they think its unfair that with blacks being app 12% of the population, they don't have 50% or more representation-in anything (except maybe basketball). If we want to do things on a strictly "fair" basis by the numbers, blacks would be even less represented in media, popular culture, etc, than they are now.
-
I think some family in Chicago did this a year ago or so. The last I heard was that they were doing without some things because they could find a "black owned" vendor. :hammer:
-
Sounds like fun to me....shoot your way in and then shoot your way back out.
Well, that's the way it's done around here.
-
Sounds like a good way to get killed, if you ask me. I've lived in OK city and Fort Worth. You'd take your life in your hands if you even tried driving into the neighborhood. I've had Black cashiers lay my change on the counter because they didn't want to touch my "white" hand! There's way more racism in those neighborhoods than I've ever seen in the Caucasian part of town.

Hoo Boy, you should go over and read the thread. See all the mental gymnastics! See the tortured logic and justification! See the Rec/Unrec wars go on for 33% of it!

66. It is "for the common good" to support minority owned businesses.
There is nothing irrational or hostile about that.
Well, then it's disgraceful and against the greater good to be all racist, discriminatory, and bigotted against those hard working Indians, Pakistanis, and Korean immigrants who open up shops here...or any other immigrant minority. Horrible.
Wait! A free market capitalist gives Beth what-for:

76. Sorry, but I disagree
It is "for the common good" for all of us to stop placing everybody into little groups, and to start supporting all local businesses. People who use race in order to support or avoid a business, are being irrational. Any successful business does not want to be known as white, yellow, red or black, they want to be known as the best.
And sorry, but affecting a persons livelihood by using race IS a hostile action.

Eh, it's all irrelevant in the end, anyway--the Chinese manufactured it or a Mexican picked it--if they wanted to be really consistent about the whole thing, they'd have to go live in a cave and catch fish to eat with a rod made from the tree limb.

RW trolls do it and they brag about it on their sites that can't be mentioned here.
What site would that be? BTW. I haven't bragged about it.

That doesn't sound like a bad way to live, excepting I don't much like fish (without mac and cheese) and I am a very bad fisherman.

I like fish just fine, but wouldn't want to have to survive on my fishing skill or luck! The cave I could deal with, as long as I had a pact with the American government that as long as I'm not using resources other than what I grow/catch/hunt/craft, they lose my SS# and strike me from the IRS rolls.

That'd be a fair trade. Especially if the "cave" can be a camper/ fifth wheel.

That'd be perfect, except they wouldn't make the bargain if I was still using the tax-payer funded roads in a vehicle :( They might cut more slack if I just walked, or rode a bike or a horse.

My question, too.

I've been doing the same thing, sort of. I have been shopping only homeless owned business for the last decade! Everyone shuns the homeless owned business in favor of black owned business or white owned business because they have HOMES. Where are the outcrys for the homeless owned businesses?!
:-)
That bobbo ....

Well I say we start advocating affirmative action for short white guys who want to play basketball. Lower the basket when they're making a shot, raise it higher when one of those tall black guys is shooting. You'd have to put the whole damn thing on pulleys but equality should be worth any inconvenience.

Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding! We have a winnah! What a great idea! We could call it "white affirmative B-Ball"!!
In other words, Whiffa Ball!

Yeah, just ask that general--what was his name? who said how important "diversity" was after the Fort Hood act of terrorism.

I seem to have read somewhere that some coach had done just that--start a white basketball team--and you should've heard the yowls from the monkeys at the DUmp. I'm not clear yet whether it turned out to be true or not, some said it was some guy trying to make a point, but nonetheless the DUmpmonkeys flung poo at the very concept. It's only OK when whites are the ones underrepresented. (Not that I think teams should make their picks on anything other than merit).
I think basketball's ruined anyway. I liked it better when they wore the long shorts and all had crew cuts, that was cute :-)

They are trying to start an all white league (http://chronicle.augusta.com/stories/2010/01/19/nba_563760.shtml) , not just one team. I look at it as providing an equal opportunity for short white guys.

The ACLU will never stand for it! Now an all Black League..........

I'm gonna boycott "Shenekque's Chittlings".

You're thinking about the Commander in Chief. He thought it was hilarious. Told a joke before mentioning it, the day it happened.

There was some muckety-muck, some days after it occurred when all the things the terrorist had previously done were coming out and he'd been transferred instead of disciplined or court-martialed, and there was public criticism over it, who said something to the effect that diversity was more important than weeding out terrorists from the ranks. Of course not those words, but that's exactly what he meant.
